Ryan: Hey everybody. Ryan here at etrailer. Today, we're going to be taking a look at the etrailer.com ram gooseneck trailer coupler assembly. So really, there's a couple of different reasons why you'd want to replace your whole entire assembly. One of them being that maybe the outer tube was damaged in an accident or something like that, or another one maybe potentially be that the welds broke on your original one that's holding it to your trailer. You might take a deeper look at it and say, "Yeah, I don't know if I really want to use that one.

I don't really think it's all that safe" because on honesty, this is a critical component, because this is going to be the main link that connects your trailer to your truck, so very important that this is in good working condition. Another reason maybe this thing sat for a long time, never really had to adjust it up or down, and then when you need to make that adjustment, it might be extremely difficult.There could be rust that accumulated on the inside of the tube, making it pretty much useless. You really have to fight it to make that adjustment that you need. I will say if your outer tube is in decent condition, a lot of times just the inner portion of the tubes can get rusty and worn out, but the outer portion is okay. If that's your particular scenario, what you can do to save a little bit of time is just replaced that inner tube.

And there is tons of different options as far as just the inner tube available here at etrailer. So one of the things that really separates this one from some of the others is how you're going to be able to adjust it. It's a pretty cool setup, actually. It's going to have a load bearing pin and a couple of jam nuts. So that pin comes out the other side with the clip, and what you're going to do if you need to make that adjustment is pull that clip out, make sure your jam nuts are loose.You can pull out that pin, then slide it to that position that you need.

Once you have it in there, put your pin back. Don't forget to re-install that clip. And then you would just tighten down the jam nuts here. Now you want to get a wrench on them and make sure they're really tight, but what's cool about this is all you need is one adjustable wrench. That's going to light to tighten them down.

Some of the other types actually require you to remove a bolt, which can have a ton of torque on it, and you'll need some larger hand tools to do that. With this one, just carry around that adjustable wrench that many of us have in our trucks anyway, and you'll be able to make that adjustment on the fly. So I will say the first thing I noticed about this when I picked it up is that it's extremely heavy duty. This thing is solid steel, nice and thick from top bottom. So we know it's going to last a long time and shouldn't give us any issues at all.Even down here at the bottom, the little things that make a big difference. We have a thick reinforced collar around here, so that's going to give it that extra support. And typically, if you we're to have any damage or bend, this is where it's going to occur. This is where all that pressure is. So because of this collar, it's really going to help eliminate any of that potential damage. So now that we kind of talked about the outer tube here, let's go ahead and talk about the inner tube. So I just went ahead and flip this upside down so we can take a better look at it. And couple of things I noticed, how thick that steel is. There were. It's going to connect to our ball. That is very thick and extremely heavy duty. I don't see really anything phasing that, at least for what we're trying to use it for.If we look here, so our ball, this will drop on top of our ball. So it's going to be nice and wide and kind of have a beveled edge, and that's really going to help us line up with our ball. We won't need to get spot on. It can be a little off, and because of that beveled edge, it will really help that ball just kind of fall into place. Even if you look at the portion here that kind of puts pressure on our ball and locks it in, that is extremely thick steel, and it's nice and tight. That's spring-loaded tension there. So this is going to be reliable, and it's really going to help eliminate any of that jarring or kind of bouncing around back here in the connection point when we we're pulling our trailer down the road. So flip it back over.So this is how it would normally sit when we go to drop our ball. And we're going to take a look at the handle and locking mechanism. So handles can rotate either which way. It's pretty large in size. Gives you a lot of room, so I think even with cold weather, so you might have some big poofy work gloves on, you're not going to have an issue getting your hand in there and locking and unlocking it. So it's spring loaded, nice and tight. So it's not going to accidentally come disengaged. It's currently in that lock position. Whenever you want to unlock it, you pull up. There's a little cutout there, and it's going to keep that handle in that open position so you can hook up to your trailer. So pretty straight forward. And that's what I like about it. It's not a ton of moving parts.It's going to be reliable and work like it should. So this thing too is going to have a time of vertical adjustment, so how much we can retract or extend this arm here, and the most retracted position or the smallest position from top to bottom, it's going to be 32 inches. Now, if we pull our pin out and put it up in that furthest position, get this locked in here. In this position, so this is as high as it goes from top to bottom, it's going to be 40 inches. So that kind of gives you an idea, and obviously the two other adjustment holes are going to fall right there in the middle. So this is going to work for a ton of different applications. So chances are really good it'll work well with your setup too. So this is going to have a 25,000 pound weight capacity rating.And it's going to work with the gooseneck balls that are two and five sixteenths of an inch. So really common size, really high weight capacity, and it should work out well. So to be honest with you, if I needed to replace this assembly on my own gooseneck trailer, I think I would be happy with this one. Really don't see anything crazy that stands out to me that would make me think otherwise. It feels like it's really heavy duty. The simplicity of it. It should work well for a long time without having to really fight it too much. There's not a ton of moving parts. And to me, that's important. I don't want to have to mess around with all these different things to get it to do its job. It's here, it's going to work, and we know we're going to be able to rely on it for years to come.Now, today, we're not actually able to install this, and that's because it has to be welded to the trailer, this outer portion here. So I want to say it's very important if you're not extremely comfortable or know how to weld, I would highly recommend bringing it to a professional who does. That way, everything's going to be proper. I will say, too, not a bad idea, since this does just come in bare steel, to paint it. That paint is going to put a layer of protection on it and help prevent any rust or corrosion issues. And that'll finish up our look at of the etrailer.com gooseneck ram trailer coupler assembly..

Good quality and stout although, the collar that assists in strengthening lower part of the tube was only welded in three small places around the top and bottom of the collar. I thought it necessary to be welded all the way around so I welded around the complete collar.

The Price was good, but the quality control could be better, some of the welds are very poor. I'll be re-welding these in a few places, mainly the reinforcing strap around the bottom of the outer tube and the locking bolt bung. Other than the poor welds, this is a solid coupler.

    I do have an option for you but we don't offer any inner tube square gooseneck couplers which measure 3-1/2" x 3-1/2" as this is not a standard size. That said, what you can do is install a new outer tube and inner tube of the standard size 4" x 4" to upgrade the coupler. I recommend the Ram Gooseneck Coupler part # GCSQ-25008 which has a 25,000 lb rating.
