Video Transcript for Curt Hitch Ball - Trailer Hitch Ball - C40004 Review

Today, were going to take a look at the Curt Two Inch Hitch Ball, part number C40004. This chrome ball is two inches in diameter. It has a shank diameter of one inch, a shank length of 2-1/8 inches. It is intended for a ball mount with a draw bar thickness of half an inch to one inch, and has a weight capacity of 6,000 pounds. It comes with everything you see here, including the nut and washer. Were going to show you how you would install this using one of our ball mounts and using our trailer hitch demonstrator.

You would just slide the shank into the ball hole of the ball mount. Also you can see, we have the wrench flats here, to make it easier to tighten. You would take your washer, slide that on first and take your nut, and slide that on, finger-tighten it. Then once youre done with that, you could use the wrench flats here to hold that while using another wrench to tighten that fully, and then youre ready to tow your trailer. That should about do it for our Curt Two Inch Hitch Ball, part number C40004.

Looks like a good quality tow ball. I'll never be able to tell you though. I cut the shank off to build my own trailer coupler lock for cheaper than a purpose built coupler lock. This ball plus the e98883 coupler pin lock makes my trailers secure in my yard as well as anywhere we go. And by buying enough keyed-alike coupler pin locks, one key fits all trailers unlike previous setups I tried where each coupler lock had its own key.

by:

Works well and is not very visible at all. Happy purchase.

by:

Proud to put crome ball hitch on my veh icle

by:

This pic makes the ball look like it's not chrome,,,, it is actually very shiny chrome and fit my setup great for my 2008 Honda Element SC

by:

Too large to fit in the above drawbar

Fit and finish is as expected. It's new and I can't comment on how the chrome finish will hold up . Threads are clean and the nut goes on smoothly. Chrome lock washer compressed nicely with no chrome flaking.

Good price

Great hitch, but needed a bigger wrench to torque this puppy.

by:

I am very pleased. The guides arrived very quickly -like two days -and were easy to install.
I have ordered everything for my used trailer including spare tire, trailer hitch receiver and the ball mount. The ball mount gave me an 8in rise which is what I needed for my Toyota Tacoma.
Etrailer follows up and does a great job.

  • Socket Size Needed for the 2" Hitch Ball Part # C40004
In order to torque down the 2" Hitch Ball part # C40004 to 250 ft. lbs. you will need to use a 1-1/2" socket. You can then use an adjustable crescent wrench to hold the hitch ball in place while you are torquing down the nut.

  • Hitch Ball Size Needed for 6,000 Pound Custom Flat Bed Trailer
To determine what size hitch ball you will need to pull your custom flat bed trailer, you will just need to look at the coupler on the trailer. Typically, the size hitch ball needed will be stamped into the coupler's metal housing or listed on a safety sticker. Once you find the hitch ball size you need, you will also need to check the ball shank diameter to ensure that it will fit the ball hole on your ball mount. Lastly, you will just choose a hitch ball that has at least a 6,000 pound...

  • Does Hitch Ball Height Factor in to Determining Rise/Drop Calculation for Picking Out Ball Mount
When determining rise you don't need to factor in the height of the hitch ball unless it's a high rise ball. The rise calculation is done by taking the measurement from the top of the hitch opening down to the ground and comparing it to the distance from the ground to the bottom of the trailer coupler when sitting level. In relation to the ball mount the dimension would be from the bottom of the ball mount platform to the top of the shank of the ball mount like in the picture I attached. An...

I went out to our warehouse to take a look at the Curt 2" Hitch Ball # C40004 that you referenced and I measured a height of 2-3/4" from the mounting base to the top of the ball. I have attached an image to assist. If this doesn't provide the height you need we also have the 2" ball available with an additional 1" rise with part # C40033 or an additional 2" rise with # C40034. These rise measurements would be added to the 2-3/4" height mentioned above.

  • Are Two Safety Chains Required By Law?
There is no one Federal law that all states have to go by in regards to size and weight rating on safety chains. You will need to check with your local DMV office for the requirements in your state. When two safety chains, # 2118-605-04, are attached to the tow vehicle, they should be crossed below the coupler in an X pattern. This is done so that if the coupler should come off of the trailer ball, the crossed safety chains can provide a cradle for the coupler to land in. This will keep...

  • Ball Mount Recommendation Made by Reese with 6 inches Of Drop
The Curt ball mount, part # C45070, would be the closest thing we offer to what you described. This ball mount is made by the same company as Reese so it is basically a Reese ball mount for all intents and purposes. The ball mount can do 6 inches of drop which is as close as we have to the drop you mentioned. Since typically the rear of a vehicle will sag slightly it's best to go slightly higher when picking out a ball mount than needed if the exact dimension isn't available. I attached...

  • Solution for Ball Mount to Move Trailer up Steep Driveway
The best solution would for a ball mount to help you move your trailer up a steel driveway would be one with a good amount of rise. An adjustable ball mount would be the best for this, something like the Curt Channel Style Adjustable Ball Mount - 5-1/4" Rise, 6-3/4" Drop # C45901. I'm not sure what rise or drop you use now, but this would give you some additional rise and allow you to use the rise or drop you need for normal towing circumstances. Both hitches are a concealed design, which means that the crossbar of the hitch is hidden behind the bumper, the only visible portion is the receiver tube and the safety chain hoops. If the extra capacity isn't a consideration, I'd choose the Curt model because the hitch is manufactured...

However, these adapters cannot be used with a tow dolly per the manufacturer specifications. What you can do is use a ball mount with 12 inches of drop, # AMSC12. When towing a trailer, you will always need safety chains or cables as required by law. The linked article on choosing a ball mount explains the measurement process we use, and you're correct that Yakima references the top of the coupler while we use the bottom. You'll measure from the ground up to the top of the level trailer's coupler, and from the ground to the top of the receiver opening.
