How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Great product and Trailer has great customer service. It's to bad that the shipping companies do not take better care with the items during shipping! will receive replacement parts to fix what was broken, but it causes lots of extra work for the customer. will have to take complete jack off to replace the broken motor cover because of shipping carelessness!!

This little rig has teeth! Much faster than i expected. About a 30 minute installation from old lift removal to new and wiring. Super simple. Great addition to my hangar 18!

Still going strong. I like this little guy a lot!

by:

Install was easy enough. Getting through the second hole at the bottom of the A frame was a bit of a challenge (paint/powder coat made it a very tight fit. A little filing around the edges of the hole and the jack tube resolves that. Drop leg is a very nice feature! Jack moves a little slower than I had anticipated (thus the 4 stars). Overall, I’m pleased with it and it definitely made hooking up to the load leveling hitch MUCH easier.

Jack is still performing well and meeting expectations. Still wish it moved a little quicker but, aside from that there are no concerns with quality and reliability.

This was purchased for my 24 foot enclosed car hauler. Overall I think this is a decent purchase, priced under $120.

The fuse should come from the factory with dielectric grease packed in the little holder as it is located outside of the housing and it's in a pretty rough environment. The power lead length is plenty long for connecting to either a battery mounted on the tongue or service box that all of your trailer wires go into- This is where I wired mine into. I actually used a grommet to plug the hole that the manufacturer ran the power wire through and drilled another hole on the other side so the wire would run straight down the correct side of the jack and into the service box.

One of the screws that mounts the black housing on to the metal frame was pulled through by the time it arrived, so I am used washers when I reinstalled them to help prevent this from happening again.

Other notes:
I will need to get a longer hitch now, as my tailgate will hit the jack housing, and I did purchase a cover for the jack from the recommended bar at the bottom when I purchased this jack.

Final:
I've only cycled it up and down twice but it worked nicely and quietly so overall I am very pleased with my purchase

Still working well, over a year later. From -30f to 90f and I havent had an issue, except for the light lense got busted. I keep a cover over it which I believe 100 makes a world of difference.

If your light lens is still busted you can get it replaced with the Replacement Cover # EJ-3520-BCV.

My Jack arrived DOA. After installing it on my trailer, the Jack didn’t work. The manual crank handle came in handy because I didn’t have time to troubleshoot and repair it at the time. It was just a wire that was no longer connected to the switch but I have to tell you it was extremely disappointing to receive a brand new item that didn’t work. If it had worked out of the box, I’d give it a five star review. You should consider soldering and heat shrinking the wires to the switches or making the wires longer so they aren’t banjo string tight and putting the lug at a strange angle.

by:

Jack is fine, mechanically and electrically. But the plastic lens over the LED lamp would not fit properly, no matter what I did. So I had to use silicone caulk to seal it up.

David

We actually sold that trailer, so I have no idea.

by:

I hope that third time is a charm. The first one I got several years ago, had a short circuit causing the battery in the camper to explode and also damaged some wiring. The next on was one that could be plugged into the 7 prong trailer plug on the towing vehicle. The motor would not raise or lower the trailer, intermittatly. Will be installing #3 shortly (connects directly to the battery), and I hope it lasts more that a couple years. Suggest that fuse to the lift be placed on the HOT side, not the Ground side.

by:

I will give 10 stars to etrailer and its employees. My 1st replacement jack didn't make out so well after a trip on the Long Island Expressway. I contacted the company, and a replacement was on the way in short order. Thank you!
The product itself does seem above average and appears great for the price point. Very easy install. I suggest taking your time with the electrical connection and hooking right up to the point of contact instead of a splice if you can, there's plenty of wire. I now cover the unit with a plastic bag, as my original lasted only 5 years and the insides were all waterlogged and rusted when it failed.

by:

Works very well on our Lance 1475. My reason for giving it less than 5 stars is the wiring provided for the positive lead. It’s too short to run it properly secured between the jack and the battery box, the manufacturer should add another 12” or so. I had to splice more wire in to make the connection and be able to secure the wire along the trailer frame. Also, a little heavier gauge wire would be a good idea for the amps this unit is pulling. Other than that, the form, fit and function are perfect.

Still working perfectly after a year of use, and perhaps 10 camping trips. Definitely great value for the money. I did purchase the vinyl cover to protect it, and just leave that on all the time.

Simple to install and such an improvement over the manual jack. Overall an awesome trailer jack for your TT!

by:

Bought this as a Christmas present for my son. Installed it July 5 and we went camping. Went camping again 2 weeks later no issue. Went a third time the beginning of August and as it was lifted to put onto his car ( Lincoln ) it slammed down thank god landing mostly on his hitch. The pins or what ever inside sheered off making it unusable. My husband emailed the company when we got home from the trip, no responds. He emailed again October, no responds. I got my “ it’s been a year, how do you like it “ email. I respond with the above. NO RESPONDS. It wasn’t cheap, it was more powerful then he needed for his size camper and it broke after TWO uses. We were hoping they’d offer and exchange but. NOPE, NO RESPONDS. VERY disappointing.

As always, I was extremely impressed with the customer service and efficient shipping of my order.
My first stop is always etrailer!

by:

So far disappointed, customer service. The box was opened and damaged on the front step. I can't tell what is missing because there is no parts list. The instructions were torn and the 57" wire has vanished into the abyss because the one attached is 47" . Sure this is just a mistake but the quality controls and customer service so far is less than desirable. I have emailed Nicole and Alexzandar with pics, per their request. I asked Alexzandar if I could start a return and he said sure I would get a separate email and the shipping of $XX.XX would be deducted from my refund. Support your local dealer this was not what I was expecting from this site.

The jack works as advertised. It is strong enough to raise the back of the truck to make it easy to set the chains on the weight distribution hitch. The only design change I would make is to have the motor on the aft side (trailer side). I can no longer lower the tailgate on the truck when hitched. But for function, it is great! I also wired in a single pole, double throw switch (with a center off position) so I can use the trailer battery when not hooked to the truck. The switch is mounted inside the trailer and in the center off position it isolates the jack so no one can operate it when unattended. I would definitely recommend this jack to anyone.

Terry

2/6/2023

Totally satisfied with the jack. Works great and my trailer comes in at over 7,000 lbs. I was able to turn the motor assembly 180* and now I can lower the tailgate on the truck. this might no work on trailers wit propane bottles on the toung. I would definitely recomend this jack to anyone

by:

Easy install for somebody reasonably handy but the lack of visuals (even when the instructions say to “see picture” that isn’t there!) is unfortunate. The instructions are also confusing because they talk about installing the fuse as close to the batteries possible for the fuse comes hardwired. It seems like they probably revised their design but did not improve their instructions. The instructions are also confusing because they talk about installing the fuse as close to the battery as possible but the fuse comes hardwired. It seems like they probably revised their design but did not improve their instructions. Still it’s a great deal and seems to work well.

Not uploading pictures because it looks exactly as advertised and exactly as in all of the other pictures.

I got the recommended matching cover and if it’s great.

After a year, it still works well. Wow, there were a lot of typos in my original review but hopefully clear :D Must have done it on my phone.

by:

Jack used on an older Airstream (25') with propane cover. There is less than 3/4" between jack shaft and cover face. This unit was the only unit I found that would not hit the cover. The vidio and pictures helped determine this unit would fit.

by:

If I were to review this product a week ago, it would have been a very different review. I bought this a year ago to replace my jack on my camper. I installed it at the end of last season and it was only used starting in May of this year. It started out great. I had no issues with raising and lowering the camper (a lot easier than a manual jack!). However, right before it was a year old, it stopped working. There was still power going ot the jack, I tried to change the fuse, nothing worked. I knew that i was still under warrenty, so we called etrailer. They were not helpful one bit. I was hung up on after i was trying to understand why i was going ot have to pay to ship this jack back to them before they would ship me my replacement. Mind you, i am still under warrenty. I don't have another jack for the camper to sit up on. So i was asking how i would do this. She was not helpful one bit and hung up. We called back and asked to speak to a manager, and he just said it was industry standard for customer to pay to ship the items back. So because they sold me a faulty jack, wanted to take no responsibility for making sure they are selling quality products, they are making me spend more money because i trusted them. If you want to try your luck with buying from this company, go for it. However, i never will again after this horrible experience we have had.

Very solid and heavy duty jack, with bright LED lighting, manufactured by Ram. Adjustable foot piece for quicker adjusting... Jack pretty easy to install, with single wire electrical connection and 3 bolts. Jack has low gear ratio and foot shaft moves slowly, but has plenty of power to lift front of trailer. Plenty of clearance behind jack for propane tank cover on our Airstream. Replaced more expensive model that was bent at mounting flange being winched onto transport trailer.

John

2/9/2019

Jack is still slow and steady and has worked perfectly since installation... The adjustable foot unit is about an inch too tall for at lowest position some sites, based on low hitchball height of our tow vehicle, but we have used the shorter foot from prior jack as an alternate, and that solved problem...

by:

I have been more than happy every time that I have used your services. Products are always exactly what I needed. And I appreciate the timely shipping of materials. Thanks

Haven’t really use it yet. Install was easy enough as far as jack. The lower plate with hole did not line up perfectly with upper plate hole. Had to do some filing for jack to fit properly. Shipping was fast considering it was over a holiday weekend. I am very pleased with etrailer. I also purchased the jack cover to keep the weather off of the jack. I am sure it will be money well spent.

For your 1993 Jayco Eagle camper weighing 6800 lbs, I am not sure if you need an A-frame tongue jack for a travel trailer, replacement landing gear for a 5th wheel, or stabilizer jacks. • Can The etrailer Electric Jack Be Connected Directly To The Trailer Junction Box For Power
As long as you run the power wire for the Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX to the 12v accessory post in the trailer's junction box you'll be able to run the jack even without a battery while the truck is connected. This jack can pull up to 30 amps so you'll want to install a circuit breaker like # PK54-130 or 30 amp fuse holder in line to protect the jack.

  • Recommended Electric Trailer Jack For A 14,000lb Dump Trailer
The rule of thumb for determining tongue weight is to calculate 10-15% of the GVWR for the trailer, with yours being 14,000lbs we'd be looking at a tongue weight of roughly 1,400 - 2,100lbs. With a jack you can always go heavier though, and the heavier duty you go the easier it will be for the jack to lift the tongue of the trailer. The etrailer Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3527-BBX you were looking at is rated for 3,500lbs, which is well over what you'll need, and is designed to be...

  • Can Just the Head of the Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX be Rotated
Unfortunately the head of the Electric Jack w/ Footplate # EJ-3520-BBX cannot be rotated by itself. You will need to rotate the whole assembly like you tried and then drill a new hole to mount it properly. You also could potentially use an extra long ball mount like part # BH20 to gain the clearance needed. This fits a 2" hitch receiver and is 13-1/4" long.

  • How To Raise and Lower Electric Trailer Jack When Switch Is Broken
I have another option for you, but I do not recommend manually touching the wires to raise and lower your jack, as if you accidently touch the 12v power wire to the incorrect jack wire you could damage the jack. Instead I recommend using the manual override on the top of the jack with a handle like the # EJ-3520-HD as long as you have a RAM or etrailer brand trailer jack. In addition I would go ahead and replace the jack when you get a chance due to the factory wiring being cut. I recommend...
