How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

Jack works very well. Not fast but gets the job done. Unfortunately I can't lower my tailgate fully without hitting the jack. Tried to rotate the head as I saw some jacks allowed. This one won't allow that. Very satisfied otherwise. Used less than one full season so can't offer an opinion on durability.

Worked well all season. The jack is covered while in storage. No issues using it after its been in storage. I have a solar battery tender so theres plenty of power to get it out of storage.

by:

Mounted quick and easy. Plenty of wire for electrical hook up. Lots of power even with a full load of water in the front tank. The only change I made to installation was longer bolts to accept washers and nuts to the bottom side of hitch. I didn't trust the taped holes in the thin hitch frame. This was no fault of the new jack. Still working strong. A back saver that's worth the money. I should have bought one years ago!

What a wonderful invention. Caution must be used when retracting. Too bad some kind of stop isnt used. But it sure works good!

Put this jack on the trailer tongue in less than an hour. Moves the tongue of a 29' 6500 lb travel trailer up and down easily. I did not find it particularly slow. Install tips: I used a two ton bottle jack and static jack stand to support the tongue while working. Check trailer negative grounding with a voltage tester, just to be sure you get a good circuit. I attached power cord via fuse directly to positive battery terminal and stowed the extra wire/fuse in the battery box. (My trailer has a power line and blade-fuse from the trailer's junction box for the previous jack but it had an occasional short so I didn't use it. If your trailer has a dependable powerline for a jack, use it.) I'm putting a 10L dry-sack over the powerhead to keep out rain, road dirt and bugs. An extra layer of protection never hurts. I hope this holds up better than the factory installed L*****t. I'll write a follow up review in a year or so. And as always, thanks etrailer for great service, great prices, and fast shipping.

by:

I purchased 2 of these a year ago to replace a hand crank on a cargo trailer. I wanted to modify the tongue of a trailer where the crank was in the way of loading and unloading a work van. The push of a button, in this case two, is way easier and much faster than old school hand power. It worked out so well, I did a dump trailer as well. Then, a friends trailer. I might be starting a trend.

by:

Great service from etrailer.com. Ordered the jack and a Fastway e2 Trunion hitch on Saturday, and had them at my door the following Wednesday.
Got everything installed today and all works great. I did notice that even with proper torquing, the mounting plate on the jack bent a bit under load of my Flagstaff pop-up. Works great...but I'll have to keep an eye on that mount. Directions call for an underplate, which I don't have room for on my trailer tongue.

by:

Product was conform to description, easy to install and work great, I completed installation in less than 30 minutes.

My Stromberg Carlson power jack is still working well. As for all my belongings I take good care of it, that should make it work for a long time I hope...

by:

I had this jack on my last trailer and I liked it. It is nice that it has a level as part of the cover to get you close. My trailer is 5,500 lbs and this jack has no issues with lifting the tongue. I do not like the glass fuse and holder that comes with it. The same fuse holder failed on my last trailer. So when I ordered this one for my new camper I stopped by the auto parts store and got a good quality sealed blade fuse holder. I thought I had read that this did not come with the mounting bolts. It does. I used longer bolts with additional fender washers and lock nuts. Ordering from etrailer is the best. It was convenient, easy, and the price is really good.

by:

I ordered the Stromberg Carlson electric tongue jack from etrailer told them I needed it right away because we were traveling and mine had broke. They shipped it right away. I had it on the 3rd day I installed it and was back on the road. This is not the first time I have used etrailer and it will not be the last.

by:

It works! It fit! The little bubble level on top doesn't seem to be accurate but I didn't buy it for the level anyway; price I think drove my decision.

by:

Installed in minutes, holes lined up like they should. Just added a connection to wire and hooked it to battery and everything worked good. No more hand cranking and it looks good on the camper!

by:

I can't review the electric trailer jack since it is winter and I won't be installing it for several months. But I can rate etrailer and the order speed. I ordered the jack on Sunday evening and it was delivered Wednesday morning. No problem there!

I love the jack, far less effort for a retiree and the manual jack was starting to feel like it was worn and might slip. I keep the manual jack in the trailer just in case but I had zero problems with the electric jack and used it dozens of times last summer.

by:

Installed easily and I chose to power it from my truck, which meant I only had to add an RV plug to match trailer connection. Minutes later it was operational and has performed perfectly for a year. Nice smooth operation and wintered well. Quite happy! A++

by:

I installed this Stromberg Carlson electric jack about a year ago. Installation was very easy (I installed it while hitched to tow vehicle - don't use your stabilizers to hold your up your trailer weight). The jack worked great on several outings last year - great time (and back) saver when setting up. However, we just bought a bigger trailer (used) and I wanted to swap this with the factory electric jack on the new trailer. The dealer agreed it was a good jack but he wouldn't let me swap. Oh well, I'll probably be replacing that one with another Stromberg Carlson soon. Also, I found the best price here of all vendors when I initially shopped for it.

Well packaged.(bought brand "x" on another site first, arrived broken).Easy installation.Works great.I highly recommend this product.Makes hooking and unhooking much easier.I have bought several products from e.trailer, never disappointed.

I have used it a lot. Has never missed a beat.

by:

The only thing keeping this from a 5 star review is the fact that the description says it has 24" lift but the actual fact is an 18" lift with a 5" extension foot giving it a 23" lift total. Other than that it does exactly what it says and appears to be well built. ETrailer has always provided great delivery and service.

by:

After a year of use, I am still very pleased with my electric Jack. It moves up and down at a good speed. It handles the 700 lbs of tongue weight of our travel trailer with no struggle. It is relatively attractive compared to some others. The white cover matches the propane bottle cover behind it. My only complaint is I wish the lights were a little brighter. They are better than fumbling with a flashlight in the pitch dark, but just not as bright as I had expected. All in all, I am very pleased and would buy another without any reservation.

by:

Easy took about 15 mins to install and test . kind of slow but will work fine like it came with a crank in case battery is dead .was shipped very fast

by:

Put it on my trailer last year, used it twice camping last year and went out for the first time this year and it doesn't work!! Had to use the hand crank!!

The first step in troubleshooting is to check that the jack is receiving power from the trailer mounted battery, and to check the power connections and the battery ground to the trailer. Youll also want to make sure that the spot where the jack bolts to the trailer tongue isnt corroded, as corrosion will interfere with a good ground connection. The jack is covered by a 2 year warranty, so if the items I mentioned above check out okay, please contact our Customer Service folks at 800-298-8924.

by:

Item is well packaged from factory for shipping. Received item quickly from warehouse. Time to install from opening package to lifting the camper was 8 minutes 30 seconds. It took 3 minutes to look at the fuzzy diagram on where the star nuts go when putting the three bolts back into the frame. Be sure to have a 10-12 gauge butt connector or something equal to your application, as no electrical connections are supplies. All in all, I would buy this again and will recommend this to others who might need to have an electrical jack replaced.

by:

Love our jack! Lifting out trailer just got so much easier! Now if only the jack removed grease from the hitch ball!

by:

The installation was easy and the new jack works very well. Better than the original.
The only problem - No wire connectors or fuse in the package. Had to buy some at local hardware.

Enjoyed the fast shipment.

Will be using this week on a fall trip to Vermont

My existing jack is unreliable and the new product should do that for me.

This new jack has been smooth, quiet, strong and reliable after over a year of use. It was a welcome upgrade over the original jack.

Customer service is class A, quick delivery, and Installation was easy peazee. Took all of 15 minutes. Reused the bolts from the my old hand crank jack, had to crimp on a battery loop type connector , wire came striped an with a fuse connected. So, after a quick crimp I connected it to the positive lead and let it jack up an down. Now, I've read that the jack is slow, well so am I. I'm a 66 years young female, in no rush, and it's way better that me doing the hand crank dance.
