When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

@Dwight Happy to hear it!

We haven't mounted the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-Go-Go Brake Actuator yet but looks to be good quality, received quickly well packed.

by:

Joanne was very helpful and communicated all activity on the order. Thanks

by:

Had to move holes for safety chains other than that fit perfect

by:

I put this on an easy loader trailer that had an Atwood master cylinder which is now obsolete. Cutting the old actuator off was a real bitch. Installing the new Dexter actuator was very easy. I could bend the existing brake line 180 and hook it directly up without having to change the end. The bolts were easily available at the hardware store, I wish they would have came with it. The quality of the drop and go hitch is unbelievably easy to use.

The trailer is rarely used. but after a year, on braking, there was a banging noise from the hitch. It turns out this was from excessive travel on the brake shoes, because of improper adjustment after break-in. After proper brakeshoe adjustment the noise went away. All is working fine.

by:

This is a nice easy to use hitch. This is the 3rd one purchased for boat trailer hitch replacement. Really like the drop and go feature.

by:

The Drop and Go Brake Actuator was easy to install on my boat trailer and works great. Easy to follow instructions regarding the bleeding of the brakes. Noticeable difference over the old actuator which was on its last legs. After a year of use I am totally satisfied with its operation.

by:

Every time I use the brakes, the actuator slams loudly or "machine guns." I will not purchase a Dexter actuator again.

Honestly any drum brake actuator is not going to give a smooth braking experience. For smoother braking, changing over to a electric over hydraulic actuator and disc brakes would be the best option. It is going to be a more expensive option.

by:

I did receive the Dexter actuator today but the package is damaged. The box is partially torn open and part of actuator is sticking out of the box. I haven’t opened the box yet but wanted to report it to you first as to what next steps you would like me to take?

by:

Very nice hitch. Really like the drop and go part and works smoothly. Also like the large cap for checking brake fluid level and looks like it will last a long time (with proper use). Not like other hitch types that the cap and threads strip out due to corrosion.

by:

Fit perfect! Great replace the for Atwood discontinued surge brake drum coupler

by:

Great product. Kicking my butt for being cheap and not doing the disk conversion though. Works good. No issues after a year

by:

The actuator was just what I needed. Now just have to bleed the brakes. The lock will prevent anyone from driving off with my boat or trailer.

by:

Works great!

by:

Easy installation.
Proper braking.

by:

Impressive customer service rarely encountered anymore. Thanks

by:

Good replacement for Atwood. Haven't used it yet but I can say I have gone through 3 Atwood's. I can see why they went out of business

by:

Great product, great price and great customer service.

  • Replacement Drum Brake Actuator for a 1995 4 Winns Model 3916 Trailer
Hey Richard, thanks for reaching out! The Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 is a great option for a replacement actuator because it's a direct replacement for the common Model 60 actuators that were popular in the '90s. I'm not exactly sure what model actuator your trailer came with but This one has the bolt holes measuring 3" apart on center and it fits a 3" wide channel tongue so if those specs match what you have then this will fit like a glove!

  • Recommended Replacement Actuator for a TDE 7.5K Coupler
Hi Hssutton, to replace your TDE 7500 hydraulic coupler I recommend going with the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes # 099-175-20. This actuator will work with 3" wide frames, 2" hitch balls, and has the same 7.5k capacity your current one has. This coupler is for disc brakes, but if you need one for drum brakes then you can use the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00 instead.

  • Looking For Surge Brake Actuator For Drum Brakes With Electric Lockout
Hello Darin, thanks for reaching out. I do have a solution for you. What I recommend is the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator # 099-175-00. This is made for trailers with drum brakes, and it attaches to a 2" ball. It does not come with an electric lockout, but you can add one using the Lockout Solenoid # T4748800. That will add the electric lockout feature to your actuator.

  • Comparing Demco and Titan Disc Brake Actuators with Electric Lockouts
That is a tough question to answer as both are excellent manufacturers with their respective pros/cons. In regards to brake actuators, they both make and manufacture them here in the U.S.A. and they both come with a one year warranty. In regards to differences, Demco makes a wide range of different trailer and towing products whereas Titan specializes more in trailer brakes. WIth that being said we have had more positive feedback from Titan products in regards to trailer brakes, actuator...

You're certainly not the first person to ask about the Atwood 85739 master cylinder but those replacement parts are simply no longer available which means your best option truly is to replace your actuator. • Replacement Brake Actuator For An Atwood 85778
Hi Greg! I have found the Demco Hydraulic Brake Actuator - Drum - Zinc - 2" Ball - 7,000 lbs # DM72VR to be a good replacement for the Atwood 85778 actuators. We get asked about them every now and then and this one works very well. It also has the easiest to use coupler out there. One thing to note though, this does not include a reverse lock out. • Looking For Replacement For Tie Down Engineering LP70 Disc Brake Actuator
Hello Todd, thanks for reaching out. I do have an option for you, but a direct replacement for the TDE LP70 actuator is not available. Our best option for replacing it is the Dexter DX7.5 Drop-N-Go Brake Actuator - Disc Brakes # 099-175-20. This is a bolt-on actuator with the bolt holes 3" apart on center and it fits a 3" wide tongue. The design of this actuator is for it to sit on top of the trailer tongue as opposed to inside the trailer tongue like your current model.

Hey David! They're both manufactured by Dexter, as Tie Down was purchased by them in 2017, so they're identical except for the branding. I recommend going with a Dexter DX7.5 Brake Actuator like item # 099-175-20 for disc brakes or item # 099-175-00 for drum brakes if you need a 2" coupler that mounts to a 3" wide channel tongue. We can definitely help but I would need you got get me the axle capacity of the trailer. Check the axles for tags that have info written on them and you'll find the axle capacity. Or if you pull a hub you can get me the diameters of the spindle where the bearings ride as well as the bearing numbers and we'd able to let you know for sure. In meantime I attached a FAQ article to this page that details how to add disc brakes to your trailer as well.
