Dexter Axle Brake Actuator - DX27FR

  • Surge Brake Actuator
  • Drum Brakes
  • 2 Inch Ball Coupler
  • Bolt-On
  • 7500 lbs GTW
  • No Lockout
  • Straight Tongue Coupler
  • Dexter Axle

Use this corrosion-resistant actuator to synchronize your trailer brakes with your tow-vehicle brakes. Over-center latch mechanism only engages when the actuator is fully seated on 2" hitch ball. Designed for hydraulic drum brake applications.

Features:

  • Hydraulic actuator activates trailer's brakes when tow vehicle slows or stops
  • Low-profile coupler latch ensures easy, secure connection
    • Over-center latch mechanism only engages when the actuator is fully seated on hitch ball
  • Aluminum master cylinder is better at reducing corrosion than cast steel master cylinders
  • Zinc plating offers excellent corrosion resistance
  • Bolt-on installation
  • Manual lockout kit sold separately
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: hydraulic drum brakes
  • Ball size: 2"
  • Mounting: 3" x 4" straight tongue
  • Capacity: 7,500 lbs
  • 2-Year limited warranty

When you apply the brakes in your tow vehicle, deceleration occurs and momentum pushes your trailer toward the rear of your vehicle. With surge brake systems, the actuator is triggered as your trailer moves forward while the tow vehicle slows. The actuator telescopes, applying force to its master cylinder, which in turn supplies the necessary hydraulic pressure to engage the trailer's brakes.

Because this model does not include a reverse lockout, it is recommended that you equip your trailer with free-backing brakes so that you can drive in reverse without triggering your trailer's brakes.

Have not use the Actuator yet. However it came in a oversize box. No packing material to protect it. It was damaged when I opened the box. Scratches and damage cable

Perfect fit. I had to notch one corner where my wiring came out of the box tubing. Really nice compared to the original that was on there

Worked great, replaced an old Atwood, welded in where the old one was cut out. Minor modification to the brake line, easy to bleed master cylinder and then bleed brake system. Coupler is extremely easy to use.

Paul is awesome!!
I was very pleased
with the way he handled the order. I was going to order it online but he suggested that he could possibly have it delivered in 3-4 days. Actually it was delivered in 24 hours.
I thought [other retailers] were quick about deliveries till I ordered from etrailer.
The coupler and the brake actuator fit perfectly and definitely was a great replacement from the Atwood coupler.
Thanks. Paul.

I slipped this into my boat mate trailer for 2001 moomba. Took about an hour to hook up and bleed the system with a buddy. Works great! If you can use simple tools and are mechanically savvy this is a no brainer.

Review from a similar DX7.5L in Brake Actuator

Received the brake actuator very fast, and it appears to be very well made. I have not as yet had time to weld it to the swing-away connection, but I don't think it will be a problem.

Review from a similar DX7.5L in Brake Actuator

I ordered late Tuesday evening. It shipped on Wednesday, arrived Friday and my boat trailer was fixed by Friday evening. Product was exactly as advertised and the perfect replacement for my damaged one. Quick and accurate shipping had me back out fishing by the weekend. Very impressed with etrailer service levels.

Exactly what I needed. Didn't require the outer housing, the insider mechanism slid in nicely as a replacement on my trailer. The etrailer videos for installation and bleeding were very helpful.

Review from a similar DX7.5L in Brake Actuator

The manual lockout device, supplied with the actuator, requires a second person to hold it in place when backing. It will not stay in place on its own.

Review from a similar DX7.5L in Brake Actuator

The product came unboxed, missing instructions and no spare break away clips. I purchased a new actuator and got one that was laying around.

Review from a similar DX7.5L in Brake Actuator

I ordered this surge brake hitch without the back up solenoid. Due to supply chain problems it was going to take 3 months to ship. Upon receiving it far ahead of schedule it had the solenoid included at no extra charge meaning that someone at etrailer expedited my order and kept me happy at etrailers expense. How can you top that for service?

  • Hardware for Mounting Dexter DX27FR Brake Actuating Coupler
The Dexter # DX27FR brake actuator would work great for a tandem axle trailer with drum brakes. We don't offer the mounting bolts, but you could source the grade 5 1/2 inch bolts locally. I've linked to a product description video for the # DX27FR brake actuating coupler.

  • Is Dexter DX7.5 Trailer Brake Actuating Coupler DX27FR a Replacement for UFP A-70
The Dexter # DX27FR would make a good replacement for trailers weighing less than 7500 lbs. The coupler is compatible with a 2 inch trailer ball, so if your trailer meets those criteria, the # DX27FR would be an excellent choice. UFP is now owned by Dexter, so other than the design of the coupler latch, it's the same actuator. You can see a product description video by clicking the provided link.

  • Do you Recommend a Weld on or Bolt On Surge Brake Actuator
I prefer the bolt on actuators. The reason is that just like the position you're in to replace it you have to cut it off. With a bolt on you just take it off and put a new one on. The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator part # DX27FR is rated for up to 7,500 lbs. so it will be more than strong enough to handle your boat when installed per the instructions. Don't forget to bleed the brakes when you've completed your install to get the best possible performance.

  • Could Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Coupler Fit on 3x3 Trailer Tongue
The Dexter DX7.5L brake actuator part # DX27FR will fit on a 3 inch by 3 inch trailer tongue like what you have. Now it would be hard to say if it would bolt right up to existing holes that you have but either way you could drill new holes in the trailer tongue to match up with this.

  • Is There a Replacement Actuator Option for a 1996 Nitro Trailer with Drum Brakes
Everything I can find about your trailer is that it uses a 2" ball, has a GVWR between 2,500-3,500 pounds when loaded and has hydraulic drum brakes. As long as that is all correct then the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX27FR will work for you. This actuator works with hydraulic drum brakes, has a ball size of 2" and a weight capacity up to 7,500 pounds.

  • Replacement Brake Actuator for UFP-47729 or Dexter 099-075-00
For your application I recommend replacing your brake actuator with the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX27FR. This is a bolt-on application rated for 7,500 lbs and is compatible with a 2" hitch ball. UFP is owned by Dexter now and this is the replacement for the A-60 and A-70 couplers (which is what you have). Attached is a review video for you to check out.

  • Is Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator DX27FR Compatible With Manual Lockout Key?
The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator - Bolt On - Drum - 2" Ball - Zinc - 7,500 lbs # DX27FR you were looking at does not come with a manual lockout key but it is compatible with the manual lockout key # DX94FR you mentioned. I included a video of the # DX27FR for you to take a look at.

  • What Size and Grade Mounting Hardware for the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout
The Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout part # DX29FR for disc brakes and part # DX27FR for drum brakes use 1/2" diameter mounting hardware. We have used both grade 5 and grade 8 bolts when doing installations of them but the grade 5 are sufficient. There is very little force actually applied to the bolts other than side pull.

  • Replacement Coupler for A-60 on Trailer
Since the Dexter coupler part # DX27FR was designed as a replacement for the A-60 you have now this would be the simplest and best replacement solution. The Dexter manual reverse lock out part # DX94FR can not be permanently installed on the coupler and even if it could it would simply prevent the brakes from working at all so it would defeat purpose of having the coupler.

  • Replacement Surge Actuator for Reliable ACT 7.5K Actuator
Best solution we have would be the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout - Bolt On - Disc # DX29FR which will fit over the 3 inch by 5 inch frame channel you have. This is a very similar design to what you have now and has the same weight capacity so it would work well. This is the disc brake version so if you have drum brakes instead you'd want the part # DX27FR.

  • Can Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Actuator DX56FR Replace Older Titan Aero 6000?
As long as your trailer has a 3" x 5" trailer tongue then the Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator w Electric Lockout # DX56FR will replace your Titan Aero 6000 Coupler. Keep in mind this actuator is designed for disc brakes, so if you have drum brakes this will not work for you. If your trailer has drum brakes you will need the # DX33FR instead. I included videos of the products mentioned for you to take a look at.

  • Does the Dexter DX27FR Use the Same Inner Member as the DX83FR
Yes, you can use the inner member from the # DX27FR and the # DX83FR interchangeably. Although they are designed to fit different trailer tongue sizes, they both use the same inner member # DX97FR. You could either purchase the inner member separately or if you want an extra/new housing the # DX27FR fits a 3" x 4" straight tongue and the # DX83FR fits a 3" x 5" straight tongue.

  • Replacement Brake Actuator for 2003 Zieman Trailer
In order to choose a brake actuator you need to first choose one that meets or exceeds the GTWR of the trailer. You also want to choose one that matches the hitch ball you are using, the type of brakes (disc or drum), and fits your trailer tongue. Another thing to consider is whether or not you want a manual or electric lockout, or no lockout at all. This actuator has a 7000lb weight rating, and works with a 1-7/8", 2", and 50mm hitch ball so you will have plenty of options.
