Parts Needed to Add Brakes to Axle of Diamond City Tandem Axle Boat Trailer

Updated 10/27/2025 | Published 03/25/2025

Question:

i have a new Diamond City tandem axle aluminum boat trailer with leaf springs. I would like to put marine grade drum surge brakes on one axle. With Drexel galvanized 10” drums and Kodiak flexible lines. Because of certain needs, I want to use the Drexel dx27fr actuator. My question is, will these hubs fit and does this whole set up seem ok. The trailer has 3500 axles 5-4.5 bolt pattern

Hey Paul, thanks for reaching out!

I saw you purchased the following:

- Dexter Trailer Hub and Drum Assembly # 8-247-50UC3
- Hydraulic Brake Kit # AKFBBRK-35-D
- Kodiak Hydraulic Brake Line Kit # 18SI-BLKIT
- Dexter DX7.5L A-60 Brake Actuator # DX27FR

Those parts will all work great with each other and provide you with the braking you had asked about. The only downside to equipping brakes on one of the axles (as opposed to both) is less braking power, but there are a lot of people that only have brakes on one axle so I can't say this is necessarily unheard of. Just understand that you'll have less braking power, and you'll be good to go!

Hey Paul, how did the brake setup on your Diamond City trailer turn out with the Dexter actuator and Kodiak line kit? Your update could make it easier for others planning a similar single-axle brake setup.
