Redarc Trailer Brake Controller - RED82CR

Highlights

  • Custom Fit for Your Vehicle: Works with your vehicle's existing wiring.
  • Smooth, controlled stops: Proportional braking matches your trailer’s deceleration to your tow vehicle.
  • Clean, factory-style look: Tiny dash knob keeps your cabin uncluttered while the main unit hides behind the dash.
  • Easy plug-and-play install: Custom harness and included mounting panel make setup fast with no splicing.
  • Confident control anytime: Push the knob for manual override to correct sway or slow the trailer independently.
  • Reliable performance every trip: Works with electric or electric-over-hydraulic brakes on trailers up to 2 axles.

Features to know about

Saves Space with Compact Knob: Mounts Behind the Dash

Most brake controllers stick out and take up knee room, but this one tucks the main unit behind the dash. All you see is a small control knob—only 9/16" wide and 1-7/8" long—that blends right into your console. It looks like it came from the factory, not an aftermarket install. The knob handles everything: adjusting brake power, hitting manual override, and showing color-coded LED alerts while keeping your dash clean.

Installed Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty brake controller knob on the dashboard of a 2023 Jeep Wrangler 4xe.

Brakes Smoothly Every Time: Proportional Control for Up to 2 Axles

The Tow-Pro Liberty uses an internal 3-axis accelerometer to match your trailer’s braking to your own. That means smooth stops whether you’re coasting down a hill or hitting the brakes hard. It works with electric or electric-over-hydraulic systems on trailers with up to 2 axles (4 brake assemblies). Output is steady and reliable at 9V–16V and rated for 18 amps continuous, so you get confident, even braking without the push-pull feeling.

Installs Fast with Plug-and-Play Harness: Clean Factory Look

No wire splicing or bulky boxes under the dash. The included custom harness plugs straight in for a simple install. The compact main unit can mount almost anywhere within reach of the 3' cable that connects it to the knob. A universal mounting panel is included to give a factory-style finish wherever you place it.

Easy to Calibrate and Operate: Color-Coded LED Feedback

Setup is simple—just drive and brake normally while it calibrates automatically. The LED changes from blue to red when the trailer brakes engage, showing braking intensity at a glance. Need to stop sway or steady the trailer? Press the knob for manual override and take immediate control. Once calibration is complete, it stays set automatically for smooth performance every trip.

Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty dash-mounted remote knob with illuminated LED light for calibration and braking status.

Built for Safety and Durability: Meets Global Standards

The Tow-Pro Liberty meets or exceeds UNECE R21 and FMVSS 201 safety regulations, giving you peace of mind that it’s been tested for both durability and occupant safety. With its compact design, proportional response, and easy operation, it’s a dependable solution for anyone adding electronic brake control to their towing setup.

What is Proportional Braking?

Proportional braking means that your trailer brakes mimic your tow vehicle's brakes. If you slam on the brakes in your vehicle, your trailer brakes will activate with the same intensity; if you brake lightly, your trailer brakes lightly too. The trailer's braking is in proportion to your vehicle's braking. This saves wear and tear on the tires and the brakes on both your vehicle and trailer.

Just what I was looking for. Looks like factory installed. Fast shipping, great sellers! Works great!

by:

Great product! This is the second truck I installed it on. Easy install, truly plug-n-play. It has a clean look and easy to operate. Love it.

by:

Great unit, easy install after watching your video.

by:

Push button came broken. Plastic piece that lights up the LED blue was broken. I have no LED indicator so I haven to guess but other than that it works great.

by:

Easy install and initial testing was successful. I used a 1157 bulb with socket and some jump leads to test without an active trailer. Will update if any issues arise.

The product is working out great.

by:

Extremely easy plug and play for 2010 tacoma w/ factory tow package. Took 15 minutes.

by:

Doesn't work. Solid red light

by:

None of the tspi switch inserts fit the 4runner its advertised to fit

by:

I purchased the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller with the custom wiring harness for my 2023 Tacoma. Installation was very easy. Took less than 1 hour to plug the harness into the existing socket and mount the button in an open switch blank in the dashboard. The controller has worked well towing an RPOD 196 and an RPOD 207. The dial is illuminated and the color changes to red when the vehicle brakes are applied. It's easy to apply only the trailer brakes by pushing the dial. I liked this unit so much that I bought one to replace the surface mount controller in my 4RUNNER. I got really tired of banging my knee on the surface mounted box controller installed by the RV dealer that we bought our first trailer from. The Redarc Liberty calibrated automatically and has worked flawlessly for over a year. I'm very happy with the clean installation and easy, reliable operation of this controller.

by:

Installation was straight foreword. It all tucked away behind the steering column. It works nice. The only issue I had is that my spare blank push button is oval shaped. I got one of the square blanks to work.

by:

Excellent product. Super easy to install on my Sequoia. The install how-to video was excellent as well. The brake controller works as advertised. Thank you.

by:

Easy install, cool that it came with switch mounting plate that works with factory switches, works great

by:

I'm absolutely thrilled with the Redarc Liberty brake controller! If you’re looking for a brake controller for a Toyota, this one should be at the top of your list. The installation was incredibly easy, and it controlled the brakes on our 19' single axle camper beautifully. Highly recommend!

For years, I’ve been moving my old-school, single-unit controller from vehicle to vehicle. Since I only tow a few times a year, I’d constantly spend time trying to find a mounting spot that worked when towing, but could be easily removed afterward.

I was facing this same mounting challenge again with my 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser—and couldn’t find a good solution. Out of frustration, I checked etrailer to see if there were any newer or better options, and that’s when I discovered the Redarc Liberty. It seemed like the perfect solution—and it truly was!

Installing the main unit under the dash was a breeze, and one of the included switch plugs fit perfectly into an unused slot on the dash. Best of all, it plugged straight into the factory harness with no hassle.

@Brett My favorite brake controller to recommend. Glad to hear you are still pleased with it a year later Brett!

by:

Arrived as scheduled. All required parts, plugs and blanks fit my car perfectly. The controller is easy to use and worked well. A little difficult to find a solid crossbar to attach the controller to in the tight space under the dash but I managed to zip tie it in place and ground the unit.

by:

The trailer shop installed this for me. They said it worked flawlessly and was definitely the correct controller for the job. seems to work perfectly pulling the trailer easy adjustment.

by:

Install was very easy. Just have to find the connector behind the drivers side kick panel and run the ground wire. Very strait forward. I mounted the box under the steering wheel on a metal bracket. Took it out to use it after install with a car loaded and it worked as intended.

by:

Took me about an hour to install, because i wanted a very secure place to mount it. Plugged unit in and secured wires which was plenty long enough. Drove truck to Texas from Colorado to pick up my RV. Drove back to Colorado with RV and brake system worked perfectly.

by:

Price was fair, ordering was easy, and it hit here quick. I ordered a Redarc Tow Pro Liberty with the kit for a Toyota. I ordered it on a Friday afternoon and it was delivered Monday morning. I like that the website verified compatibility with my vehicle.

by:

The praise surrounding this unit is well-deserved. I installed it in my 4Runner, and the process was straightforward, enjoyable, and fulfilling. It resembles a factory-installed accessory. While I have not yet towed with it, I connected it to my trailer, and everything synced up and calibrated seamlessly.

@Bob Really appreciate you sharing this, both right after the install and a year down the road. It’s great to hear everything went together smoothly on your 4Runner and that it gave you that factory-style look and feel. That’s exactly what you want with something like this. Even better to hear it’s still working perfectly after a full year of use. That kind of long-term feedback is super helpful for others trying to decide if it’s the right fit. If you ever end up putting it through some heavier towing or unique conditions, we’d love to hear how it continues to perform. What kind of trailer are you usually pulling with your 4Runner?

by:

Very straight forward install. The most difficult part was just zip tie-ing the unit securely under the dash. It was easy to find a good spot; but kind of cramped for me lying on the driver's side floor with my head against the pedals.

by:

The system installed perfectly on 4Runner. Included were multiple dashboard mounting options which fit perfectly. The most time was spent finding the pigtail to connect to. It’s far left rapped tight above kick panel. I found the perfect place to mount the Redarc box above brake pedal pad. If you look directly up from pedal there is a blue box mounted to a metal bracket. Wire tie it to that. And it even has an open metric threaded hole for the ground wire. Best harness routing is to stay against fire wall under the emergency brake bracket but on top of the cable. Wire tie at that point to keep in place.Above there are moving springs etc that should be avoided. I used whiteout to fill in the trailer brake control knob mounting plate letters. Just wipe off excess whiteout quickly with paper towel. Cleanup with acetone if necessary. Included a few pics. Quality is top notch and very pleased with eTrailer’s website and customer service.

by:

The REDARC RED82CR is a very well-designed and constructed trailer brake controller. The installation was very easy. It is clear that this brake controller was specifically designed for my 2008 Toyota Tundra. The fit and finish made for a very clean looking installation. I wish they made this when I first bought my truck and brake controller. I've been using a unit screwed to the lower instrument panel that can get in the way. The REDARC custom harness and controller can be mounted anywhere. Comes with everything needed to put it where you want. Also, eTrailer got it to me fast! Very happy with this kit.

by:

Got this brake controller for my 2022 Toyota 4Runner. Love the fact it looks factory and only the controller dial is visible. Note: I did the white lettering my self with some hobby model paint, it does not come this way from Redarc. Looking forward to using it for the first time!

Funny how things work out. Just about a year later I finally got to use my brake controller on our 19 foot Evo Travel Trailer. I couldnt be happier with how great it worked and how responsive the controller is. The best thing about it is that when something is wrong with the connection, it blinks red and doesnt stop until the problem is solved! For example when I hooked up the trailer plug for some reason I accidentally pushed one of the tabs over to the reverse round connection and that created a fault. So the controller was blinking red telling me something was seriously wrong with the connection! I unplugged it, saw what was wrong on the female connector, fixed the tab and was working great afterwards. I highly recommend this product 100
