Best Brake Controller Option For 2010 Toyota Tundra With Factory Tow package

Updated 03/20/2026 | Published 03/15/2026

Question:

Hello I’m looking for recommendations on a trailer brake controller for a 2010 Toyota Tundra pick. Something for 2 axles . The truck does have both 7 pin round and 4 pin trailer plugs. I believe it has the tow package. Thanks

Hey Dale, thanks for reaching out. For your 2010 Toyota Tundra with the factory tow package, a proportional controller is definitely the way to go for smooth braking on a 2-axle trailer, and a really clean option is the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty # RED82CR.

This controller works great on your truck because it installs behind the dash, so all you see is the small control knob, and it comes with a custom plug-in harness for a true plug-and-play install into the factory port under the dash. No splicing needed, and it’ll give you smooth, consistent braking instead of the jerky feel you’re trying to avoid. It also handles up to 3 axles, so you’ve got plenty of capacity for your setup.

What kind of trailer will you be hauling?

So I inquired with the dealership and the truck does have the factory tow package. The item listed says for non factory tow package. Could you provide a list of all required parts, harnesses etc for installation of the brand you mentioned ? Thanks Dale

@DaleT Hey Dale. The Redarc # RED82CR I mentioned above will work on vehicles with or without the tow package. You won't need any additional parts to complete your install.

By far the best controller I’ve ever had in 40 yrs of pulling trailers. No more banging my knee on the stupid unit. I will never buy any other brake unit.

Dale, I bought this for my 2024 Toyota 4Runner. My wife installed it by herself. It is the best brake controller I have ever owned. And I’ve owned many. I love that the only visible portion is a small knob in one of the factory knockouts on the dash. And controlling it is simple.

@Rod Nice! So easy a wife can do it! Maybe its time for Redarc to adopt a new slogan? Haha kidding! Thanks for taking the time to share your experience though. I appreciate it!

My experience with the controller is it awsum! Power and ground ,harness plugged into factory harness, pretty much mount anywhere. Drive awhile so controller gets it's orientation and self calibrate. Couldn't be more simple. Light years from what I remember my dad dealt with years ago with 60s technology. Highly recommend.
