Brake Controller Recommendation for 2005 Toyota 4Runner with Tow Package for EOH Brakes

Updated 06/17/2026 | Published 06/08/2026

Question:

I am looking for a brake controller for 2005 4Runner V8. It is to control a new install of a used but good Dexter hydraulic controller E/H 1600. I need it to work well and be a simple if possible DIY install. Thanks, Shannon

Hey Shannon, the brake controller I recommend for your 2005 Toyota 4Runner that has the factory tow package would be the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty part # RED82CR which will work flawlessly with the electric over hydraulic actuator you have now, installs easily, and works great as it is proportional meaning it senses how hard you apply the vehicle brakes and applies the trailer brakes with a similar intensity. It also only puts a small knob on the dash of your vehicle as well.

@ShannonD how many axles does your trailer have and about how long is it from the front of the trailer back to the axle?

@JamesonC It's roughly 11-feet to the front edge of the trailer at the A. ShannonD

@Shannon If it's a single axle kit you'd want the part # DM6097 or if it's a tandem axle setup you'd want the part # DM6098.
