Brake Controller Recommendation for Tall Guy in 2014 Toyota Tacoma

Updated 09/29/2025 | Published 09/02/2025

Question:

I have a 2014 Toyota Tacoma TRD off road that has factory 7 way plug. Due to my height I must locate the electric brake controller on the console portion of the truck otherwise it will interfere with me getting in and out of the truck. This means that the controller will be mounted 90 degrees from the pictures illustrating the controllers installation. Plus, I will need to cant the controller about 15 degrees vertically so I will be able to read the display and access the controls. Is this controller capable of being mounted in this manner? I was also looking at the Tekonsha controller but based on the diagrams it cannot be canted. Thanks

Hey Mark, I have what I think would be exactly what you are looking for with the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty part # RED82CR which only puts a small knob on the dash of your 2014 Toyota Tacoma. It's a fully proportional controller that comes with the correct install harness for your truck as well. As a fellow tall person I totally understand not wanting to bang your knees on a controller! Would that work or are you really wanting a more traditional controller?

Hey Mark, did the Redarc Tow Pro Liberty work out for your Tacoma, or did you end up going with a different option like the Curt TriFlex? I'm asking because your experience could really help others in a similar situation.

@JamesonC Ordered a curt controller but had to send back. The pigtail connection was 6 inches too short and curt did not make a longer one. The redarc will not work since I have no open slots on my accessory panel.

@MarkD Could you drill a hole elsewhere on the dash?
