Video Transcript for Review of Ark Straight Tongue Trailer Coupler - Off Road Coupler - AR44FR

Today we're going to take a look at the Ark trailer side articulating off-road coupler for 2" receivers. This coupler is ideal for off-road towing. It's a fully articulating coupler that'll insert into your trailers 2" receiver, and attaches to this included 2" hitch ball which would be mounted on your tow vehicle's ball mount. Most of the off-road trailers will use a 2" hitch receiver on the tongue of the trailer, and this articulating couplers would install into that 2" hitch receiver. It's ideal for the rigors of off-road towing. Does use a quick hitch locking system, which saves you time during hookup.

I'm going to demonstrate that. So what we're going to do is install it into this, have an example here of a 2" by 2" hitch receiver opening. What you'll do is just take your coupler and slide it all the way in till you get the hitch pin holes to line up. Once you got the hitch pin hole lined up, go ahead and put your pin through there. Put your clip on there, and now you'd be all ready to go. You can see there's an articulating feature.

It articulates this way. The quick hitch locking system is pretty nice because what you can do is here's the ball that'll be on your ball mount. It's showing unlocked. So right here, if I turn this, you'll see this red area that says unlock. That means you're ready to go onto the hitch ball.

So what you'll do is align this coupling head over the tow ball and then lower that head over the tow ball completely. Once it's completely onto the tow ball, what you'll do is just raise the safety catch lever here and you can see that it engages the auto locking. So the ball's automatically locked in there, and then it releases it to allow it to articulate this way. And then you can even articulate this way. So when you're doing your off-road trailering, it's not going to come disconnected. And then to remove it, all you have to do is push up on this safety catch lever, twist this over to where it'll say unlocked, and it latches into place and unlocks from the ball.

And now you're all ready to hook up again. You do want to always make sure that when it releases that the screen that says locked would be showing before you do any towing. It does have grease Zerk fittings on all the moving components. There's two right here. You can see that you're going attach your grease gun to lubricate it to ensure the couplers lubricate it for anything and there's even a Zerk fitting right here to lubricate the movement for it right here. This is a nice steel construction. It's tough enough to handle any environment. It is J684 compliant, has a maximum towing capacity of 5,000 pounds, and the ball is also stamped at the top 5,000 pounds.Last thing I want to do is just give you the measurement. Let me turn it this way so you can see from the center of this hitch pin hole to the center of the ball coupler. If we go from the center right here to the hitch pin holes are 13-3/4". But again, just to demonstrate one more time, it's all ready to be coupled, so you just lower this down over the ball. Once it gets completely down over the ball, just push that up and then you can see the green showing, it means it's locked and you're all ready to go just like that. That should do it for the review on the Ark trailer side articulating off-road coupler for 2" receivers.

The Ark Articulated Off-Road Receiver was the perfect solution. I like the fact that it hitches to a standard ball. My Jeep Wrangler has a 4” lift and 35” tires, and my dirt bike trailer is relatively low, so I welded a 2” receiver tube on the upper side of the trailer draw bar, and use the Ark in the drop configuration with a 4” drop ball on the Jeep, which gives me a good level on the trailer with maximum clearance. Because the receiver tube is on top of the draw bar, if I reverse the Ark to the lift orientation, it works well on a vehicle with lower regular tow ball height. I like the way the Ark locks onto the ball, it’s a very positive connection and easy to determine that it’s fully engaged and locked. On the road, it tows well, with no misbehavior. I haven’t had it in any extreme off-road environments because the bike trailer is a little lower and longer than ideal, but I feel confident that I have significantly extended the range of places I can actually go with this configuration compared to the regular ball receiver (that was worn and needed to be replaced anyhow).
While I was at it, I welded a second receiver tube onto the back side, and made a 2” mount for the jockey wheel, so it can be removed and rotated 90 degrees so there is maximum clearance under the draw bar. Totally happy with the entire project!

For functionality this hitch is exceptional! I do however have a couple of observation that I have experienced using mine. First off it is a well engineered piece of serious equipment with just a couple of weak points. I had no issues myself but when my son-in-law returned my trailer the internal spring had come loose inside and was actually causing resistance in the lock feature’s rotation. It was easy enough to disassemble and reinsert the spring but after looking at it, I’m surprised if it’s not something that happens quite often. My second issue is that the plastic rest that holds the hitch flat while connecting did not hold up. It’s cracked in half.. not sure if it had a weak point or if the sun got to it. If you are working alone.. it’s kind of important.
I’ve gotten a ton of comments and I’m sure that I have sold a few along the way. Zero rattled when on the road!

So paint comes of the lock/unlock mechanism pretty much immediately. The connecting of the hitch to the ball is pretty simple but must take into consideration some of the slope differentiated by the pivot of the hitch when disconnecting. I would say overall its a pretty good product but for those things and that is just connecting and disconnecting to get used to it. Not sure what is what until I actually use it.

by:

Just what i needed. I hope they designed it so its lockable.

Comments
The best way to secure it is to remove the coupler from your trailer when it is not being used and lock it in your vehicle, so your trailer would not be able to be towed away.

etrailer's website and service is great.
The Ark coupler is a great concept, but poorly executed. I received mine with the "fork" visually misaligned to the main pivot block, which means that when you are towing, the force from the pull will try to pull the swivel straight - not good for any simple bearing/bushing. It seems like they secured the fork at an angle to the bushing inside the pivot block. Another lesser issue but worth mentioning is that they have a plastic cap on the back of the main pivot block. The cap is loose, held in place with 2 small countersunk screws. Other than holes drilled for the shank of the screw, there is no provision for countersunk screws on the pivot block. The sharp edges of the screws sit proud of the pivot block. Not good for something that will need heavy handling with bare hands. I am returning the Ark coupler and will not buy another of their products for now. I gave Ark a second star for innovation, but it ends there.

This thing is awesome, goes anywhere my jeep does. Gives great clearance over deep ruts and over good size boulders. Tracks on the freeway better than I expected but not surprised.Heavy duty. Easy install on new build trailer. Definitely recommend it to anyone for off road applications.

by:

Very important to note you will need space in front of coupler for it to work properly. If you hook Get up to a drop hitch it looks like it will break the plastic pieces on the coupler

by:

I like the design but unfortunately the finish (paint) came off on the upper part of the switch when it jammed and then got unjammed - thus I fear it may be a manufacturing issue and will soon get rusty. Other than that I would give it 5 star. I thought about giving it 2 or 3 because of the issue but I can't argue with the design.

by:

I haven’t used it yet still building my trailer but I like the looks of it

by:

Just installed the tested it around the ranch seem to work well. Only issue is that there is no way to lock the receiver.

by:

Took a long time to arrive, (out of stock), haven't had a chance to use yet. Seems well made and should work well.

by:

Not what I was looking for and was not able to return it ????

by:

I was looking for an off-road coupler. I read the pro's and con's of the two better known brands. I had concerns over getting my trailer to tow level behind my rig as those other brands didn't seem very adjustable. When I saw the Ark coupler, I was pleased. It has all the range of motion for full articulation, yet it uses a standard ball which means I can use any drop/rise hitch I want to get my trailer leveled right. Since I don't have to purchase a specialty hitch for the vehicle side, the overall cost of this is less than its competitors. The Ark coupler is heavy duty. It is not light weight at all. It seems to be very well made. I have only done some very basic testing, but it hasn't had any issue with binding. I like it.

  • Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler Offset
You can indeed flip the orientation of the ARK # AR44FR articulating coupler so it's used in the rise position. When used in the rise position, you'll have right at a 2-3/4 inch rise. I've linked to a product description video featuring the ARK # AR44FR off-road Coupler.

  • Can the Ark Articulating Coupler Be Used On a Trailer Traveling the Highway
Yes. The Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler for 2" Receivers - Trailer Side # AR44FR can be used while towing on the highway; the off-road designation just refers to the typical usage of the coupler and not any type of rating. The Ark # AR44FR is SAE J684 Compliant for towing trailers in the US.

  • What is the Purpose of the Green Arm on the Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler
When the Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler for 2" Receivers - Trailer Side - 2" Ball # AR44FR is unlocked you will see a red area on the opposite side that says unlock. This means the coupler is ready to go onto the hitch ball. After you align the coupler and lower it onto the tow ball it will engage the auto lock and you will see the green "arm" indicating it is locked on. I have attached a review video where this is demonstrated and you can see it switch from red to green after connecting...

Yes, you are correct. The Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler for 2" Receivers item # AR44FR fits a standard 2" receiver ball. The kit comes with one you can use, but if you already have one hooked up to your pick-up truck and side by side then you will not need to replace them. You will not need a special sleeve for your vehicles' 2" receivers. You will need to have a 2" receiver on your trailer to attach the coupler to. I have included a picture for you and a review video. I hope this clarifies...

  • Trailer Dolly Compatibility with Lock N Roll Hitch
A standard trailer dolly like # RA20 is not directly compatible with the Lock N Roll hitch system. There is not a dolly designed to work with that system, however if you were to use a similar system with the ability to attach to a hitch ball, then a dolly could be utilized. I recommend instead of the Lock N Roll you could use the Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler for 2" Receivers - Trailer Side - 2" Ball # AR44FR which works with a hitch ball and thus would work with a dolly.

  • Can the Ark Articulating Coupler Be Used with an Adjustable Channel Mounting Ball Mount
We haven't tested using an Ark Articulating Coupler # AR44FR with a Curt Adjustable ball mount like the # C45902 and I don't think this is going to work because of the limited clearance from the hitch ball to the channel. You'll instead want to use a ball mount with a drop like the # C45338 specifically for towing with the AR44FR, since it will allow the coupler to move freely. • Does Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler Have a Lock
You are correct that there isn't a lock made specifically for this kind of off-road coupler, the Ark Articulating Off-Road Coupler for 2" Receivers - Trailer Side # AR44FR. Since it mounts inside an off-road trailer's hitch tube like the Buyers Products Black Receiver Tube # 337RT25806B, the best way to secure it is to remove the coupler from your trailer when it is not being used and lock it in your vehicle, so your trailer would not be able to be towed away.
