Recommended Redarc Brake Controller and Plug In Harness for a 2022 Toyota 4Runner

Updated 08/31/2026 | Published 08/28/2026

Question:

I have a 2022 4-runner TRD Off-Road Premium. What is difference between the RED82CR and the RED98CR? Do they directly plug into factory harness, or do you have to use factory supplied pigtail to connect?

Hey Kenny! The difference between the Redarc item # RED98CR and the Redarc item # RED82CR is that the item # RED82CR comes with three different options for mounting brackets.

Both the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller item # RED98CR and item # RED82CR come with the brake controller and a custom fit wiring harness that connects to the factory port on your 2022 Toyota 4Runner. This port is located above the emergency brake pedal. It'll give you a simple plug in installation.

For your 2022 Toyota 4Runner, I recommend the Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller w/ Custom Harness item # RED82CR. This kit comes with a mounting bracket that will fit inside the factory knockouts on your dash. I attached a picture below so you can see what it looks like installed.

What kind of trailer are you pulling? Feel free to answer this and throw in any other questions you have, where it says Add Comment.

Kenny, I installed the 98CR in my daughter's 22 4runner with the switch bezel from Etrailer. Hardest thing about the install was mounting the control unit in the required orientation. You can't just flop it anywhere, I assume because of the position of the deceleration sensors. Unit initialized and adjusted easily, accurately, and seamlessly. Also has the option of driver controlled extra or less brake bias

@CK You are 100% correct CK! The orientation definitely has to do with the sensors. Thanks for coming back and sharing that feedback.
