What Brake Controller Works with my 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Question:

I am looking to install a Redarc brake controller on my 2023 Toyota 4Runner. Unfortunately the vehicle does -not- have the factory tow package factory receiver hitch and 7/4-pin wire connections only, no tow/haul button or auxiliary transmission cooler. Q1: What wiring setup will work the best? Q2: I probably wont be towing a trailer off-road often if at all, is it worth upgrading to the Redarc Elite or sticking with the Liberty model?

Hi Brian,

If your 2023 Toyota 4Runner doesn't have a tow package but has the 4-way and 7-way connector on the back, you should have a wiring harness run to the 4/7-way. They don't include the custom harness or brake controller to connect to it up at the dash to use the harness though. The Redarc Tow-Pro Liberty Brake Controller part # RED82CR comes with a custom wiring harness that will plug into the factory harness in the vehicle and connect into the brake controller so you can install it without having to splice into anything.

If you're rarely towing a trailer off-road and the terrain you'll be towing in isn't that rough/severe, the Tow-Pro Liberty will work just fine for your needs. The Tow-Pro Elite Brake Controller part # RED56CR works in off-road mode by giving you the ability to set the amount of force the trailer brakes are applying instead of just matching your tow vehicle. So, you could turn the force down on soft terrain like sand or turn it up on steep terrain, so it doesn't push you downhill.

Brian, I have 2021 TRD Pro with the class three hitch receiver with the 4/7 setup. I dont know about your 4Runner model. The connection in the cab is so very easy. Good luck. Jenna Ps it works great
