Features to know about

Lightweight Strength That Handles Serious Loads: 20,000 lbs GTW and 5,000 lbs Vertical Load Limit

The Curt CrossWing brings heavy-duty performance in a hitch that weighs just 60 lbs—about 65 percent lighter than most traditional 5th wheel hitches. It’s built from premium steel with a reinforced head connection point and finished in a corrosion-resistant carbide black powder coat. That combination gives you true hauling power rated for 20,000 lbs GTW and 5,000 lbs vertical load without the bulk or struggle of moving a heavy hitch in and out of your truck bed.

Curt CrossWing Lightweight 5th Wheel Hitch installed in truck bed, showing steel construction and compact, two-piece design optimized for easy handling and heavy-duty towing.

Simplified Hookup You Can See From the Cab: Open-Faced Head and Wedge Coupler

Coupling is faster because the CrossWing uses a wedge-shaped coupler that bolts around your trailer’s king pin and slides into a large, open-faced funnel on the hitch head. You can clearly see that connection from your backup camera, so lining up is simple even on uneven ground. Once nested in place, just lock it down with the easy-to-reach handle. The open design cuts down on guesswork and eliminates the jaw-to-king-pin rattle found in traditional hitches.

Close-up of Curt CrossWing coupler piece that bolts around trailer king pin for easier hitching and reduced rattling during towing.

Smoother, Quieter Towing: ShockDrop Cushioned Isolator

The built-in ShockDrop technology uses a polyurethane cushion at the pivot point to soak up bumps, jerks, and chucking between truck and trailer. That means less jarring through the seat and more control over rough roads. The full 360-degree articulation lets the head move fore, aft, and side to side for stable towing even when terrain isn’t perfectly level.

Quick to Lift, Easy to Live With: Lightweight Two-Piece Design

This hitch was made for people who don’t want to wrestle heavy gear every time they clear their bed. The two-piece setup with built-in grip points makes lifting simple enough to do solo. When you’re done towing, it comes out just as easily as it went in—no special tools or equipment needed. With three height settings from 16-3/8" to 20-3/8" and a 5" offset for improved cab clearance, it’s ready to dial in for a level, confident tow every trip.

Video Transcript for In-Depth Review of the Curt CrossWing Lightweight 5th Wheel Hitch for Dodge Ram

Hi there. I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Today, we're gonna take a quick look at this Curt CrossWing Lightweight Fifth Wheel Trailer Hitch. This hitch is going to mount into your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer hitch. Like most fifth wheel hitches, this is going to have a place for you to hook up your king pin from your trailer. What really sets this hitch apart is just how lightweight it is.

So this top portion here is actually going to be mounted onto your king pin on your trailer, so if you we're to ever need to remove your fifth wheel hitch from your truck bed, so that you would have more clearance if you're hauling other things that you wanna put in the truck bed. This is only gonna weigh about 62 pounds, about 61.5 pounds, which is ridiculously light for a fifth wheel hitch. I can't imagine any other fifth wheel hitch being able to pick up that easily. Typically it takes a couple people to move or you've gotta disassemble it, break it into smaller parts or use a hoist to lift it up out of your truck bed. So this being sixty one and a half pounds is gonna make it super convenient to take out of your truck bed if you ever need more clearance and if you're the kind of person that is towing frequently but then also using your truck bed, so you need that clearance.

This is gonna be a great option for you. Kind of standalone in the industry right now at how lightweight this is and yet it's still gonna do a really good job for you. It's gonna connect to your base rails with an installation kit that is sold separately. It's compatible with B&W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese and Valley, Above Bed, Base Rails, so pretty much the industry's standard, any of those will work to get this mounted onto your truck bed and then they include the pins and clips to get it secured in place. It's got a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish so it is gonna give us a 20,000 pound gross towing weight and a 5,000 pound tongue weight.

We do also have four inches of height adjustment here. So if I undo this center bolt, I can take that out and can show you we've got several different settings for our head unit, so we can raise it up like there and there, so we've got height adjustment from sixteen and three eights of an inch up to twenty and three eights of an inch, so it's going to accommodate a lot of different setups so that you can make sure that you are gonna be towing your fifth wheel trailer properly. This does have an articulating head, so as I've mentioned, this portion here is going to actually attach to the king pin on your trailer, so you've got a couple of bolts here that will pass through once you get this just slid in place. You've got the plastic lube plate here to ensure that nice smooth king pin rotation, that's gonna sit on your king pin can prevent it from falling off with those bolts going through the top or on the sides there. So when you're going to hook up to your trailer, this is gonna be sitting on your king pin and then your hitch will be in your truck.

So you'll just back up and it's gonna be very easy to get that lined up and one of the really nice things is once this touches, you'll know that you're lined up properly and then you can get out and lower your jacks on your trailer. You get that sled right into place, then you've got this handle here that you just slide in, push in, turn, and then it's nice and firmly connected. You've also got the locking pin here for a little extra peace of mind that it's gonna stay in place but your head unit is gonna articulate side to side and front to back. So it's going to give you great control and coupling on uneven terrain. It's going to help eliminate your guesswork when coupling, being able to line that V-up like that, so very simple to get hooked up. We do have a cushioned isolator here that's going to give us our shock drop technology in between our head unit and our post. So that's going to help reduce our chucking and jarring for a much smoother towing experience. It's going to absorb some of that impact, prevent it from being sent up to our tow vehicle or our truck, or back to our trailer. This is going to have a five-inch offset from your king pin to your center of your hitch. So that's gonna provide some added turning clearance especially for those of you who have a shorter pickup truck beds and that's gonna be a really nice feature there and the handle is gonna be super easy to reach from the side of your truck. Very easy to undo that, like I said, it's as simple as pushing in, rotating and pulling out then you're just connected and you're ready to pull forward and away from your trailer when you're hooking up, get it all lined up lower your trailer, so it fits slides down into place. You can see we've got little push out there that's gonna fit into base spot there. Once that's all lined up, just push the handle in then rotate it forward and pull it back and then get your pin put in. So super easy to get hooked up. Like I said, kind of a standalone option here for those of you who want something that's gonna be really lightweight, easy to take out of your truck. This does come with a limited lifetime warranty. So if you we're to have any issues with it, you're more than welcome to reach out to us here at etrailer.com, but I don't think you're gonna have any issues. I think we're gonna be very, very pleased with this especially if you are gonna have to lift it if you've lifted any other fifth wheel hitch, you know they are bulky and very heavy. So this is a really nice option to remove when you need to. They do include instructions, especially for getting that height setting set up properly and making sure that everything is gonna be attached securely, so you don't have to worry as you're going down the road. But like I said, really nice option here for those of you who are going to be needing to take your fifth wheel hitch out of your truck bed especially on a frequent basis this is gonna be like no other. So that completes our look for today. Again, I'm Michael with etrailer.com. Thanks for watching..

Worked really well. Especially like the one piece mounting bracket. Secure and easy installation.

I ordered this to install in my 2020 Silverado 2500. The install was easy and took close to 2 hours. Have not pulled my fifth wheel yet so really no idea how this will hold up. Everything was in the box nothing missing. Shipping took 2 days to get to my house. Very happy so far with everything I have ordered fro you.

by: Shawn06/09/2022

I installed myself on my 21 GMC Sierra 2500HD, Denali, Duramax. Took me around 3hrs to do with basic shop tools. Over all the unit itself is very nice. Heavy well treated metal, bolts are all good quality. Not one single alignment issue. Sucks that the truck manufacturers can’t make some sort of pre setup locations as it was some tight finger tip spots. But that’s not to the fault of This item at all.

by: Jerry07/19/2026

Fit perfect. Easy install if you’re han dy.

Put it in my self went great towed camper home today!

by: Taylor06/09/2025

This hitch has been amazing. I can't figure out how it's not more popular. I installed the a rail system that fits into the pucks on my chevy 2500 to make it even easier to install/remove. Here's what I love about it.
1. Super easy to hitch, unhitch.
2. Takes up very little room in the truck bed.
3. Lightweight and easy to remove when not in use.
4. Smooth ride.

We love it and I've already recommended to a friend who recently replaced his 250 lb B&W with the Crosswing and he loves it too. Don't hesitate to purchase.

by: Matt06/29/2024

I am very happy with the hitch. The turning radius has been great and because of this hitch, I do not need to have a sliding style hitch as originally suggested by most sources.

by: Eric04/20/2025

I bought this a few months ago and this is a great hitch. I will be towing with this tomorrow and can't wait to see how it performs. Easy attachment to the 5th Wheel. The worst part about this hitch assembly was getting 300 foot pounds of torque on the head bolt. Assembly hint, torque this bolt from the bolt head and put your wrench on the nut side. Once I did this I was able to get the required torque on this bolt.

4/23/2025

@GwendolynY the first hitch was super easy. User hint when hitching using the crosswing, back into the head until you make contact, then pull ahead about an inch then lower your unit that way the 5th Wheel won't move backwards and stress the landing gear on the 5th wheel as the king pin head meets the the hitch head. The tow was very good. I had some chucking but I don't believe that is related to the hitch itself. I am almost certain it is related to the suspension on my truck. Towing with a 1 ton dually and the 5th wheel is only 12K. Therefore I may not have enough load on the suspension or may need to upgrade the stock shock absorbers to ones that have more dampening. I will need to do some more investigating to see if I can improve this. Otherwise I am very impressed with this hitch and how it performs. In fact, I have purchased and additional king pin head to use on my in-laws 5th wheel since they are getting older and I am now towing their unit to and from their seasonal camping spot.

@Eric Thats a great tip, Eric. Thanks for sharing that. Some suspension enhancement would definitely help out. We do carry several options for your truck. It looks like there are a lot of *tech tips* for most of them so if you run into any questions when looking at them definitely let me know and I can help out!

Easy to install and it works great.

by: Ben03/02/2020

Installed these bed rails on my 2020 Silverado Duramax 2500HD. Heavy duty rails and of good quality. Install time was around 3 hours. Definitely remove spare tire and heat shield. I did find it very difficult to torque 2 of the nuts on the driver's side front rail. Everything else no problem. I did spray some undercoating on the frame rail ends and nuts. Just did that for extra protection and it will make it easier to see if there is any movement when towing.

by: Brian09/18/2022

Super impressed with the Curt Crosswing hitch. It’s light enough for a child to handle. Coupling and uncoupling so far has been extremely easy. Takes up far less space than a traditional sliding 5th wheel.

we went on a 150-mile trip it performed great. I replaced a curt A16 fifth wheel
slider hitch. Easy to hitch I will post more later after more trips

Great traveled over 10,000 miles and no issues added a gen-y executive pin box and the trailer pulls great.

I purchased this rail kit for a camper we bought. It’s fits perfectly with the hitch that came with the camper. I also bought the spider gooseneck adapter which works great with these rails!

by: David07/07/2023

I recently switched to the Crosswing from a Curt Q16 slider hitch. I loved the Q16 other than the weight of it. My loaded trailer weight is around 11,500 pounds. The Crosswing is a very stout hitch, and is extremely easy to hitch and unhitch, even at slight angles. While towing, I have noticed that it is quieter than the Q16 and chucking was nearly eliminated. I have to make a fairly tight turn in my Cul-de-sac, especially if there are cars parked on the street which I always slid the Q16 back while turning. I was worried about this but had no problem making the turn. The truck and trailer were close to a 90 degree angle and I still had over 6 inches between the cab and the front cap (2019 Silverado 2500HD short bed). I would definitely recommend this hitch.

by: Brad05/05/2026

5 stars for the quality of the parts. Directions get you through but could be better. Video of installation makes it look way easier than it is. Took me 2 afternoons to complete the process.

This kit fit well and the installation instructions were very clear and easy to follow.

The Curt Crosswing is wonderful. We pull a 10,000# trailer (well under the load limit for this hitch). Several things I like: 1. the ease of getting it in and out of my truck, it’s easily moved by one person (I’m 68 years old)— 2. The positive way it connects trailer to truck (this takes some getting used to, there is no “bang!” As the trailer pin slams home in a conventional fifth wheel… just a gentle glide of a lever once the hitch is in its “saddle”)- 3. Able to hookup/unhook at just about any angle… most recently I needed to unhook with the truck headed down a slight grade and angled at 45-50 degrees towards the curb side. No sweat!

The most often comments I get about the Crosswing goes something like: “That’s NOT a fifth wheel” or “I wouldn’t trust my trailer with that thing”… to each his own. The way I look at it is: Curt is a well respected hitch manufacturer who wouldn’t put their reputation at risk with an untested or “dangerous” design.

It’s different, yes, and in this case, that’s a good thing.

Two things have occurred to me over the past year: First, as I previously stated, this hitch is lighter than most any other “FW hitch” — light enough to be the target of “crimes of opportunity”. Easily enough rectified, Curt manufacturers a lock 23256 which offers some deterrence to theft. Second item, which may or not be an issue for others, pulling with our first, traditional FW hitch I made it a point to run our rig across a scale, GVWRGCWR was within limits. Recently we crossed another scale, I was surprised to see the GCWR had actually gone down, then I remembered the Crosswing… our previous hitch was HEAVY. Just a nice surprise.

by: Steven10/07/2021

Installed on a 2021 GMC Denali DRW. The installation instructions and video need to be updated they are somewhat miss leading as to the difficulties of install. The driver side front rail nuts are almost Impossible to install because of gas tank. They will be impossible to torque without dropping the gas tank. Your will also have to remove the dual rear wheels to torque the frame plates Took almost 5 hours to install. Other than that have yet to use hitch.

by: Sid07/30/2025

Product itself is really nice, well engineered and extremely stable in the truck bed. It's not as scratch resistant as I had hoped, I moved an electric oven and it really scraped the rails.
It does hold the hitch in place perfectly while towing, the holes and pin placement slots are spot on exactly like they should be. Mates really well with my Curt Fifth Wheel Hitch. Overall, satisfied with my hitch rails.

The only drawback is the installation.... OMGH! Was going okay until we got to the bolt that's on top of the fuel tank, could barely reach it and only get one millimeter turn at a time, then the torque wrench got stuck....
Just an ass-kicker!

But perseverance pays off and we got it installed and torqued to proper settings. Hope I never have to do that again.

by: Gene04/28/2026

The CrossWing pulls great the issues are hooking up and unhooking. When you lift it off the hitch it isn’t smooth at all. When you hook it up it kind of falls in very hard. This isn’t a problem but the angle makes it tough.

by: Daryl03/27/2025

I traded my Curt 16k slider hitch for this new crosswing
It definitely moved my trailer back 5 inches and I do not see the need for the slide hitch I rarely used.
It is lightweight and easy to manage by yourself ( my old one was just too heavy )
The new hitch has nearly eliminated all of the chucking and bucking.

It is super nice how much easier it is to manage this one vs. other styles on the market. Really happy that this got rid of the chucking! We'd love a photo of the new set up if you feel like sending one in. I can add it to your original review :)

One later and Still love it, I switched trucks to one that has a puck system, but bought an adapter plate cause I really like the hitch. The only drawback is leaving the adapter on the camper. If you have to move it with something else you can always take the two bolts off and remove it.

by: Jeff08/28/2026

I have my pickup bed back! I had a “removable” slider hitch that was heavy and cumbersome enough that I left it in the truck. I replaced it with the Crosswing and I now have a removable hitch. The way the hitch mounts and the curve of the trailer mean I don’t need a slider hitch anymore. Good riddance!

by: Rick08/29/2026

When I first purchased this hitch I was skeptical. Once I installed it, I was surprised about the weight and the easiness of putting it in and out of my truck. Since last year, I have towed my fifth wheel on 4 different occasions and am very impressed on how easy it is to hook up and how well it tows. The last time we went camping, I noticed another camper that had a bigger fifth wheel than I have and he had a Crosswing as well. I highly recommend this hitch.

by: Jeffrey06/08/2026

Arrived on time and it was in perfect condition. Easy to put together, you do need a torque wrench that goes up to 300 foot pounds. Hitching up is very easy. I did a test tow and it was a huge improvement over my old curt a16 for a smooth ride. Looking forward to my next long trip with my new crosswing hitch. Thanks etrailer

Hey Ryne, yes we sell the industry standard fifth wheel rail kits separate from our hitches but for some reason we make them harder to find than they should be. So for your 2024 Chevy Silverado 2500 you would want the part # C16429-204. Do you have a hitch already?

For a 2022 GMC/Chevy truck the Curt fifth wheel rail kit part # C16429-204 is the correct fit and for just the bracket kit the part # C16429 is correct...BUT the bracket kit is not compatible with Pullrite rails. You can't mix and match the bracket and rail brands so you would have to go with the Curt complete rail kit. If the hitch you have is a Pullrite and it's one of their ISR style hitches it will be compatible with this rail kit.
