Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Features of the Equal-i-zer

Head Tilt Adjustment

Controlling head tilt with traditional washer method

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system uses the traditional washer-style adjustment method to achieve the perfect tilt. Controlling the head tilt helps you to fine-tune the leverage on your entire system, making it easier to install and hook up the spring bars. To adjust the tilt, simply slide washers onto the spacer rivet and insert the rivet into the head assembly. To increase the angle, add a washer. To reduce the angle, remove a washer. Most setups take four to six washers to achieve the proper height. Once you get the desired tilt, insert the shank bolts to secure the head to the shank and then tighten it in place.

Construction of Spring Arms

The Equal-i-zer spring bars are not made of traditional spring steel. Rather, they are constructed of a chromium-molybdenum alloy steel. Chromoly steel has a high tensile strength for extreme durability. It also features excellent dexterity, which allows it to give as required and then return softly back to its original form. This pliability is important in minimizing trailer bounce while still ensuring that the weight of your rig is adequately distributed.

Fixed Sway Control Brackets

Installation of Sway-Control Brackets

The unique sway control brackets of the Equal-i-zer are easy to install and simple to use. They clamp onto your trailer frame and conveniently adjust to a position anywhere between 27 inches and 32 inches back from the coupler. These brackets provide the attachment points for the weight distribution spring bars. To position the spring bars during hookup, simply use the included snap-up lever to lift each bar into place on the L-shaped brackets. Then secure the bars in place with the included L-pins and clips.

Equal-i-zer Hitch 4-Point Sway Control

The Equal-i-zer weight distribution system works to stop trailer sway before it begins. This is achieved through the rotational friction that is present in the weight distribution hitch itself. Within the system head, the downward pressure that is placed on the hitch ball by the trailer is combatted by the upward pressure exerted by the spring bars that are mounted in the sockets. This upward force is placed on the spring bars on either side of the system, creating the rotational friction that, essentially, forces your trailer in line. This type of friction is responsible for two points - one on either side of the trailer - of the 4-Point Sway Control. To ensure that enough tension is present, make certain that the socket bolts in the head assembly are torqued to at least 45 foot-pounds.

Points within the Equal-i-zer system where upward and downward forces interact to create rotational friction

The other two points of sway control are created by the steel-on-steel friction that occurs when the spring bars slide within the L-brackets that are mounted on the trailer tongue. Most traditional weight distribution systems have spring bars that are suspended by chains. Although this ensures that the system is not so rigid as to create bounce in the trailer, it also allows a good deal of side-to-side play in the system. Letting the spring bars hang freely minimizes the rotational friction described earlier. It also eliminates your system's ability to create the type of direct friction that has been shown to be so effective in limiting trailer sway.

This direct friction that is applied to the spring bars in the Equal-i-zer system helps to stop sway once it has begun. The concept is similar to the way in which an add-on friction sway control device functions. When each spring bar moves forward or backward, or side to side, it rubs along the bracket, creating friction. The resistance created by this action limits the movement of the spring bar, thus preventing further side-to-side movement of the trailer.

Most add-on units feature some sort of friction material similar to that used in automotive brakes. But the Equal-i-zer uses direct steel-on-steel contact to create resistance. This is the same sort of friction that is used with locomotives that pull loaded railcars weighing tons. No additional materials are needed. The steel will outlast any of those other materials, providing an extremely durable, functional sway control system.

We've had a long and sordid history with distribution hitches. The failures are always in the same two places: at the hitch where the bars "click in" to the spring pins or at the brackets where the chains hang from. Don't use a chain-style distribution hitch for heavy duty use. This design alleviates both those issues and has been holding up great.

Product is fine but shipping is horrible. Items arrived in boxes that were falling apart. UPS had to tape a whole box and parts were falling out when it arrived. Haven’t had a chance to check to see if everything is even in the box. Not acceptable.

From my limited experience with the hitch, it appears to be very high quality. Have not had it out on a long trip yet, but did do a 20 mile road test with speeds up to 70mph and it was very stable. It is on a Toyota Tundra 5.7 and is pulling a 23.5 foot toyhauler that probably weighed around 6500 lbs. at the time of my short road test.

by:

I like the hitch itself. Camping world installed it but the rear of the trailer really sways

Hmm... I have a couple questions. How long is the trailer you are using this with? What is the tongue weight of your trailer? If there is anyway to more evenly distribute weight in your trailer, I would start there.

by:

When it arrived the packaging was torn apart. Sooooo I don't know if I received all the parts as there was not a packing slip included.

great hitch, easy installation

by:

I had been using a less expensive competitor sway hitch with chains on a 27 ft. camper. I didn't think the performance of the hitch was too bad but I didn't know what I was missing. We recently purchased a 32 ft. toy hauler and I tried using the old hitch. The performance was horrible. After a recommendation on the correct hitch from etrailer and reading the reviews, I purchased the Equalizer 14,000 pound hitch. Man what a difference! The toy hauler pulls straight as an arrow. In addition, the semi trucks don't suck and push the rig all over the road when they pass. Lastly, the wife doesn't have a death grip on the door arm rest. She actually reads a book during the trip which says it all.

The only complaint is that it is noisy when pulling through the campgrounds. But who really cares when it performs flawlessly on the road. Thanks so much etrailer!

I It’s working out great! I bought the plastic clips for the L brackets to reduce the hitch noise when entering and leaving in the campground but didn’t help. Nonetheless, still a wonderful hitch and would buy again.

The jackets reduce the sound by a very small degree, but remember that metal on metal friction that creates the noise is what's providing your sway control so eliminating the noise would eliminate the performance of that function as well.

by:

Great product! I noticed a big difference in towing 12k pound toy hauler, loaded, versus not having the equalizer. I wish the instructions mentioned points of lubricantion during each step, not at end of assembly...had to retorque many bolts. After about 1000 miles it has become noisy, so it may be time to relubricate/retorque.

Eric P. from e-trailer helped get my shipment delivered in a quick manner without breaking the bank, so thank you Eric for your help!

I would like to see more discounted offers/codes...

by:

Cuts down sway considerably. Noisy on turns because it uses friction on bars to control the sway. Definatly worth the price but not as good as a Hensley. Would I buy again, yes. Hook up is a little more physical getting the friction bars onto the L brackets but easier once you learn not to put full weight of trailer on the ball until you position the friction side bars on the brackets. Own several trailers and this purchase allows me to move to trailer needed by just buying an extra set of L brackets for each trailer. Seems to be well built and no problems after a year of use. Glad I paired my purchase with power post. This helps find the sweet spot when hooking up.

If you hitch up the trailer, and use the trailer jack to raise both the front of the trailer and the rear of the tow vehicle by a few inches, youll find that enough of the tension is taken out of the system so the spring bars are easier to put in place.

by:

etrailer was great. Great service and quick and easy. The actual hitch itself was easy to install despite not having the clearest instructions and then difficult to get the sway bar socket to swivel. A lot of grinding metal and leftover burrs in the sockets making them hard to move even when the socket bolts and bush were loosened and all moving parts greased. That part was not machines well. Rest was. I filed and wire wheeled it and got them to move but still very stiff. But it works now and rides well. An hour and half job though took four hours.

It is possible that the weight distribution system could be over your tongue weight. Ideally your total TW will fall in the middle of the systems operating range. This ensures the system is stiff enough to provide the weight shift to your front axle, but without being so stiff that it causes weird handling from the trailer. If your actual total TW is 1200-1300-lbs then a system rated for between 1000- and 1400-lbs would be perfect. There are a couple of other possibilities that could be causing the grinding, however, we would need some more information.

The Ram 1500 handles this big trailer with ease using this hitch set up.

Love it . A +

by:

I ordered a 14,000 pound Equalizer hitch from etrailer. I was extremely pleased with everything. Ordering , price, free delivery to Florida. There was a follow up on when it would arrive. Hitch arrived in perfect condition and all parts were there. George follow it up from you trailer with a call to make sure everything was perfect and it was. Have told all my friends about the trailer and great service

by:

The box that it came was pretty beat up during shipment. The hitch is real stiff
where the bars go in to the hitch. The installer in my area said they would loosen up with usage

by:

Absolutely works great aside from the squeeking. I would suggest using a jack because the pry bar thing sucks. Was able to set this thing up fairly easy. Once I got it set to my rig, the camper and truck operated perfectly, not only did it smooth out the ride but nearly no sway at all. Absolutely worth the money for safety and better comfort in the ride.

Where has this been my whole life of towing bumper pull set ups?

by:

Product works as advertised. We pull a 10,000 lb 24' catering trailer that the weight distribution is far from even with convection oven, 2 door commercial refrigerator and more. We were having severe swaying problems on the highways. Bought this sway control and it stopped all swaying. Before I couldn't hit 55mph without uncontrollable sway and now there is no speed limit that causes sway. Very easy to hook up, follow directions and its a no brainer. After 1 year I still use it every time and seems to work just as well. Re-adjusted for a new truck in minutes. Doesn't interfere with any wire or chains and we have 3 camera system along with custom frame platform on front of trailer to support 2- 100 lb propane tanks and a generator and was still easy to fit on and works great.

by:

Would highly recommend this hitch. My new travel trailer weighs 9,500 empty and was swaying like crazy in a cross wind. Switched over to the equalizer and now the setup is rock solid at all speeds and even with a substantial cross wind. We needed to make this upgrade since many of our trips are on the Columbia River, Washington, and Oregon Coasts. Don't purchase a cheaper hitch, I bought a less expensive 14k hitch and then bought this one after the 3rd trip. I cant seem to find a buyer for the cheapo one now and its just taking up shop space and my money. I installed and set up the hitch in about an hour with a socket set, torque wrench, level, and tape measure.

Exactly what I wanted at half the price than other dealers, Customer service top notch, very friendly on the phone and delivered everything as promised. I recommend etrailer for all your needs, they care and I will be their customer for life.

It is always a pleasure doing business with you! I have never been disappointed with your products I purchased.

by:

The sway control is awesome. The quality and durability of American steel is impeccable in this WDH. I had one on my previous trailer. When my new trailer came with a chain type WDH last year I couldn't wait to replace it with an Equal-i-zer WDH. I highly recommend Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW. I tow a 2020 Rockwood 2604 SW with a 2017 Toyota Tundra.

by:

Very pleased with this hitch purchase, reasonable price, quick delivery, minor issue resolved quickly. I found out that I had been using an undersized Equalizer hitch for my new trailer. When I started using the new hitch, towing was like night and day, to the better!! For all of you reading this do your self a favor... double check your capacities, order the correct size hitch, and get it from Etrailer. You wont regret it.

by:

I experienced no sway problems after changing to the Equal-i-zer hitch. I pull a 30 foot travel trailer with a 1200 lbs TW. My original 2500 Dodge Ram had air bags. I recently bought a new truck and discovered I didn't need to install air bags thanks to the Equal-i-zer hitch. One year and over 5000 miles of towing I can say, I am very, very satisfied with this product.

by:

Couldn’t be happier with the product and product support from etrailer! Following the easy to follow instructions that were provided with the hitch, I was up and running in about an hour. The only thing I would purchase along with the hitch, is the sound dampening pad that is now available. I purchased the item with the help of customer service and support, got me squared away in no time. Nothing but silence now when I tow. Pulling a 34’ prowler with a 2014 f350.

Pics of my sway setup

by:

This is an outstanding hitch. Easy to install, we did it on our camping trip and the drive home was so much more comfortable then with the old weight distribution hitch. There was no sway whatsoever. We pull a 30 foot camp trailer with an F150 and the weight distribution with this hitch is unbelievable. I now have peace of mind knowing my new hitch will keep my trailer from swaying anymore.
This is a great product and I highly recomend it.

by:

The Equal-I-zer hitch was a night and day difference. The trailer tracked perfectly with no sway what so ever, even with a very windy day. The whole unit (truck and trailer ) has become very easy to handle and docile on the road. Thank you very much. The hitch worked as advertised and is easy and quick to install. I would recommend this hitch to anyone needing an anti-sway weight distributing hitch.

  • Which Trailer Specs Determine The Correct Weight Distribution System?
Weight distribution systems are rated by total tongue weight which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to tow trailer plus the weight of any cargo stored behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The hitch weight of 456lbs mentioned is the unloaded hitch weight, and would not be correct to determine a weight distribution system. The easiest way to get an accurate tongue weight rating is with a tongue weight scale like the # e99044, but there are other methods outlined...

When determining which system is needed, you do not need to include the weight of the system itself as that's built in to the capacity of the system. This particular kit is rated for trailers with tongue weights ranging from 800-1200 lbs. To determine which system is right for your needs, you'll need...

  • Replacement Equalizer Weight Distribution Spring Bars to Increase Capacity
It is usually possible to replace the spring bars in a weight distribution hitch setup so long as the two sets of bars are the same type, both trunnion style for instance, and both are from the same generation of hitch. A 10-year-old setup may not be able to use current-model replacement spring bars. Based on your trailer dry hitch weight of 918-lbs (which I presume means the trailer's unloaded weight) bars rated for 1200-lbs may not be stiff enough. A properly-loaded 8800-lb trailer could...

  • Is the Equal-i-zer 14K Weight Distribution System Too Much for a 7,500 lb - 8,000 lb Trailer
The Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control part # EQ37140ET would be a bit too overrated for a 7,500-8,000 lb trailer and if used there would some negative effects such as ineffective sway control. That said, it's pretty easy to switch to the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution System w/ 4-Point Sway Control part # EQ37120ET because all you will need is the Replacement Head for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Systems part # EQ90-02-1200. The new head would then provide...

  • Recommended Weight Distribution System for 2020 Jayco Eagle HT 280RSOK Travel Trailer
The Blue Ox # BXW1500 and the Equal-i-zer # EQ37140ET are both good systems, but if the tongue weight of your travel trailer falls into the 1000-1400 lb effective range of the system, the sway control effectiveness of the Equal-i-zer system is much better than that of the Blue Ox SwayPro. Both systems are manufactured in the USA , but Equal-i-zer is manufactured by a company who's core business is weight distribution, that's their primary focus, and they're excellent at what they do. If...

  • Best Weight Distribution System with Sway Control for a Tritoon Boat Trailer
In order to help prevent and reduce trailer sway while pulling your boat/trailer with your 2014 Ford Expedition you are going to want to use a weight distribution system with integrated sway control. In order to determine which unit is correct for you, you will need to find the loaded ready to tow tongue weight of your trailer and add that to any cargo stored behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. The sum of these two figures will be what is referred to as total tongue weight (TTW). This...

  • Recommendation For Weight Distribution System For 37 Foot Grand Design Travel Trailer
In order to get the right Weight Distribution (WD) system for your towing setup, you need to know your actual Tongue Weight (TW) when fully loaded and ready to tow. You will also need to include any weight from behind the rear axle of your 2017 Chevrolet 2500 Denali. To make this easier, I recommend using something like the Etrailer Trailer Tongue Weight Scale, Item # 5780. As you determine this weight, keep in mind that the TW is 10% to 15% of the total loaded weight of your trailer. After...

  • Towing Capacity of 2007 GMC Yukon XL and Recommended Weight Distribution System
Your pictures didn't come through so I looked up information on your 2007 GMC Yukon XL and the Jay Flight 242BHSW. Also, you didn't mention the trailer's model year so I used current specs which list its GVWR at 7,000 pounds. If your trailer's GVWR is dramatically different let me know. Finally, if you would like to send me your pictures directly you can reply with them. From my research your Yukon XL can tow between 4,200 pounds to 9,700 pounds. The exact capacity of yours depends...

  • Weight Distribution Towing Rockwood 2104S with a 2006 Toyota 4Runner
Weight distribution systems are rated with a tongue weight range that you want your setup to land in the middle of. Because your Rockwood RV loaded weight will be between 6,000 and 7,000 pounds it's likely the tongue weight will be between 600 and 1050 pounds. A trailer's tounge weight should be 10 to 15 percent of its total weight. You will need to choose a system based on the loaded tongue weight. . In addition to the trailer's tongue weight you need to factor in the amount of weight...
