What Size Trailer Tongues Do Reese and Equal-i-zer Pole Tongue Adapters Fit?

Published 01/24/2018

Question:

Thank you. Very helpful. My frame rail measures 4" wide by 7-1/2" tall. Is there a longer bracket i could get to account for additional frame height?

I assume you were talking about the tongue width and tongue height that the respective pole tongue adapters fit. The Reese Pole-Tongue Adapter # RP58393 fits tongues that are between 1-5/8" and 5" wide and between 3" and 6" high while the Equal-i-zer Pole-Tongue Adapter # EQ95-01-5950 fits trailer tongues between 1" and 5" wide and between 2" and 5" high.

I found a solution that will work for your trailer frame which is 7-1/2" tall x 4" wide. I spoke with a representative of Equal-i-zer who said that one of their systems such as # EQ37120ET would work for you. What you would need to do is replace both brackets with Inner Link Plate for Equal-i-zer Sway Control Bracket - 8" Trailer Frames # EQ90-02-5208 and Outer Link Plate # EQ90-02-5378. Due to the 4" width of your frame you are going to need to replace the bolts that come with the Equal-i-zer system with longer, 5" bolts to accommodate the width. I was told they were simply 1/2" threaded bolts available at any hardware store. The other thing you may need to do, since the brackets are for 8" frames, is use a 1/2" hardwood shim if there is a gap. The Equal-i-zer technician said that it will likely be tight but there is a possibility you are going to need to use that shim. Keep in mind that you are going to need to find the appropriate weight distribution system so you will first need to know your total tongue weight (TTW), which is the tongue weight of your fully loaded and ready to go trailer plus the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. The ideal system would be one in which your TTW would fall somewhere in the middle of the weight distribution system's tongue weight capacity. For example, the Equal-i-zer # EQ37140ET would be perfect for a TTW of 1,200 lbs. I've added a link to our page with each of our Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems for you to come back to once you determine your TTW, or if you already know it.
