Video Transcript for What to Know About the Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar for Reese Weight Distribution System

Today we're gonna take a look at the replacement trunnion spring bar for the Reese weight distribution system. This has an 800 pound maximum tongue weight capacity. Now this is a replacement spring bar, it's designed to work on the Reese weight distribution system. This is a trunnion bar, it is hot rolled and tapered for nice superior strength and flexibility. The trunnion end, which is right here, is what will connect into the head assembly. And then the curved end on this side will connect to lift chains that will connect it to the lift brackets. Also, this spring bar could be used with the dual-cam sway control by Reese.

The curved end here is designed for use with that system. It does attach to the sway control arms. It will sit right on the sway control arm. Now we do sell that dual-cam sway control system separately on our website, it's part number RP26002.Now again, the tongue weight rating on this is 400 pounds to 800 pounds. And it is for a quantity of one spring bar.But that should do it for the review on the replacement trunnion spring bar for the Reese weight distribution system.

With this 800 pound maximum tongue weight capacity.

LESSON LEARNED!!!! READ IF YOU ARE NEW TO TRAILERING!!!!
I bought a new 27' travel trailer. Naturally, I needed a way to couple it to my vehicle safely. I have about ten years experience towing with a weight distributing hitch, so I was reasonably confident I knew what I needed when ordering a new one. I estimated that the toungue weight on my mew trailer would be in the 900lb range. I purchased a Reese dual cam package rated for 1100lb tw from Etrailer. I installed it according to the specifications and measurements outlined with the instructions. I found myself making adjustment after adjustment to get the trailer to "settle down" at speed. After trying everything from moving all weight possible to the toungue to changing the angle of the spring bars several times, I decided to weigh the tongue at a local truck scale. I was 503 lbs...... unloaded.... My spring bars were obviously waaaay to stiff to be effective. I ordered 800lb spring bars from Etrailer, installed them, and road tested them. The vehicle ensemble drove and handled like a dream. It felt extremely stable at interstate speeds. So take a lesson from me......do your homework before you order your stuff.

The 800 lbs. trunnion bars were just what I needed for my Jayco camper. The 1200 lbs. bars were just too heavy for my camper to be able to get the weight distribution set properly with my F 150

by:

After using a tongue weight gauge I decided to drop from 1200# to 800# bars. I got them in 3 day. Thanks for the great customer service. I tell everyone about etrailer.

by:

Reasonable pricing!! Great ontime delivery of critical part for my RV!! THANKS!!

I would like to thank Amy for being very helpful in helping me make the right purchase. I felt she went above and beyond with her help and sent me the right spring bar.

by:

My low rating was because of the shipping. When I placed my order I told the order person that all the reviews I had read on line related to poor shipping, in particular, the condition of the box and how people complained about broken open boxes. I requested that perhaps they could simply reinforce the box with some nylon tape or at the least, some clear packing tape. I was told that shipping was free and what I get is what they offer. Ok, sure enough, my package arrived today, box broken open and BOTH spring bars hanging out! Thankfully a vindictive person did not take one or both of them. The picture speaks for itself. Shame on this attitude! Tape is CHEAP.

by:

This is a great weight bar. Very simple to install and seems well built. I have been around other styles and choose the trunnion style for its ease of installation. Also, etrailer customer service can not be beat! They will not stop until your situation is resolved. This was the case on another product a friend purchased and I was hooked on etrailer since then!

by:

I changed from 600lb bars to 800lb bars I still don't like the Reese Dual Cam hitch I thought maybe a heavier bar might make a difference they did stop the porpoiseng but still get some sway . that's why I only gave 3 stars nothing wrong with etrailer service and support .

by:

Etrailer had the cheapest price I have ever seen for 800lb spring bars and free shipping. I placed the order at 5:30pm CST on a Saturday and the bars were at my house on Wednesday!!! Completely satisfied and will definetly look to etrailer for future trailering needs.

I have the “Old Style” Reese dual cam setup on my 2 horse trailer with large tack room bumper pull. I lost one trunnion style spring bar and the bolt on cam that’s attached to the underside end of the bar (see picture). Reese discontinued making parts for that system in the early 2000’s, my system was purchased in 1969. Looked everywhere with no success. I called Etrailer and for a new dual cam system and talked to Nicholas C, he advised me that the RP22225 spring bars would replace the old spring bars and cam. I had my doubts until he sent me a customers picture with the RP22225 bars on the same system I have, “A picture is worth a Thousand words”. Nicholas C And the Etrailer save me over $300 in unnecessary parts and a days labor setting up a new weight distribution system.

by:

The new weight distribution hitch exceeded my expectations
Pricing was excellent,
Customer service was second to none!

by:

I don't have much to say about the product, it is a good product well worth the money. I will say one thing about etrailer if you're looking for RV parts or anything related I highly recommend them they are very knowledgeable staff and fast shipping and the price was great.

by:

It’s always such a pleasure to work with etrailer. They have such great technical staff that helps me better understand what is the right item for my situation. They also have such a tremendous variety of RV related products. For me, Etrailer is simply the best I’ve ever worked with. So knowledgeable, courteous and professional.,

by:

The service agent who helped me was very helpful. I lost a stabilizer bar on a trip from Missouri to Florida. The correct bar was delivered right to my RV site. I would recommend e-trailer for all trailer needs. Barry

by:

Shipping was prompt, as usual, and order was correct. The wd bars work as they should.

by:

I needed lighter spring bars for my lighter weight trailer. Etrailer had the perfect replacement for a great price.

by:

Had a trunnion bar delivered to my campsite while on vacation. Arrived very quickly. Reasonalbe price. Thanks a lot!

  • Can 800 lb Reese Trunnion Bar Work in Place of 600 lb Draw-Tite Trunnion Bar
Hey Jeff, thanks for all of the info and the photos! The 600 lbs TW Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar RP23227 was discontinued back in 2020 so that's (unfortunately) out of the equation. The 800 lbs TW Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar # RP22225 will physically fit with your current parts, but it will increase your tongue weight range to 400 lbs - 800 lbs. As long as your loaded trailer tongue weight is in that range you'll be good to go!

Hey George, yes you can swap the springs bars you have now with the part # RP58369 and you will have a higher rated Reese weight distribution system like you are wanting to have. This system would have a tongue weight range of 800-1,500 lbs.

  • What Trunnion Spring Bars do I Need for My Reese Head Part # 58167 ?
Hello Randall, When picking out the correct trunnion bars to go with your Reese 58167 weight distribution head it is most important to be as close to the loaded tongue weight as possible. Your tongue weight will typically fall between 10-15% of the overall trailer weight. You mentioned a weight capacity of 9K, but I think you are referring to how much the F150 can pull. The best way to find out your trailers tongue weight is to load up the trailer as you normally would and use something...

  • Correct Spring Bars for Reese WDH for 6,000-7,000 Pound Trailer
For a proper setup, you want the spring bar rating to match the tongue weight of the trailer. 600 lb spring bars are not going to be rated high enough. The tongue weight is typically 10-15% of the loaded trailer weight so you're right at the top of the range or over depending on the car you load and how it is loaded. The # RP22225 would be a better choice since the tongue weight range is 400-800 lbs. Still, I recommend measuring your tongue weight with a scale like the # e99044 to be...

  • Replacement Lift Brackets and Sway Control Recommendation for Reese Weight Distribution System
It sounds like you are talking about the lift brackets such as # RP6637. They attach to the trailer frame and hold the chains at the ends of the spring bars. As far as sway control the best option is going to depend on the design of the spring bars in your weight distribution system. If the bars have the hook end like bar # RP22225 then dual-cam sway control # RP26002 is the best option because it stops sway before it starts. If your spring bars are straight at the ends then your best...

  • Can the Reese Dual Cam RP26002 Work On Straight Spring Bars?
To get the Reese Dual Cam Sway Control System # RP26002 to fit, your spring bars will need to have a curved end that the chains are attached to. Kind of hard to explain, so I did include a picture of the end of the bar this fits. With that being said though, the # RP26002 will not be able to work with your current spring bars. You may be able to replace your current spring bars with something like the # RP22225, but you will need to confirm the weight capacity needed before doing so.

In order to be able to use a dual cam sway control like a Reese Dual Cam High-Performance Sway Control # RP26002 you will need to have spring bars that are bent at the end of them. Check out the picture I attached that shows which bars will work and which will not. For a curved bar that is in the same weight range as your Pro Series Trunnion Style Weight Distribution Kit # 49586 you would want a Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar # RP22225. • How to Identify Weight Rating of Weight Distribution Springs Bars
Unless there is obvious damage to your weight distribution spring bars - rust, chipped-off material, or a clearly inappropriate bend - they should still be functional. On a trunnion style bar like Reese # RP22225 there is a bend at the trailer end of the bar which engages with the dual cam sway control. On a round bar system there are bends at both ends. The thing is you need to know the tongue weight they are rated for. Spring bars can look very much the same but be rated differently....

The overall length of the Replacement Trunnion Spring Bar part # RP22225 from the end of the trunnion to the end of the bar is 33". I have attached a photo with this measurement for you as well. This spring bar is a direct replacement for Reese Weight Distribution Systems such as the Strait-Line Weight Distribution with Sway Control part # RP66073. It has a 400-800 lb tongue weight rating.

  • Can 1,200 lb Bar # RP66009 Replace 800 lb Bar # RP22225 for Reese Strait-Line WD System
Both the Strait-Line Weight Distribution System # RP66083 for 800 lbs Tongue Weight (TW) and the System # RP66084 for 1,200 lbs of TW use the same head unit and lift brackets. This means that you can replace your 800 lb bars, part # RP22225, with the 1,200 lb bars, part # RP66009. The bars are sold in a quantity of 1 so you will need to purchase 2 for your replacements.

  • Strait-Line Weight Distribution for a 2015 Ram 1500 and 2012 Windjammer Travel Trailer
To choose a weight distribution system you will need to go by the total tongue weight of the set up. This is calculated by taking the tongue weight of the trailer, when loaded and ready to tow, and adding to that the weight of anything loaded behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. Tongue weight is typically 10 to 15 percent of the gross trailer weight so on a 7,200 pound trailer that would be 720 to 1,080 pounds so the 1200 pound system (which is actually rated for 600 to 1200 pounds)...

If the weight distribution system that is on the trailer is more than 3-1/2 to 4 years old, then you will need to basically replace everything and not just the spring bars. The problem is the newer parts are not compatible with the older parts. The new bars will not fit in the old head, so you would have to replace that as well. And since you will be adding dual-cam sway control, you might as well replace the whole system because the cost is about the same. My recommendation is a new system....

  • Picking Out Weight Distribution and Sway Control for R-Pod 178
Ideally the loaded tongue weight of a trailer falls in the middle of the tongue weight range of the weight distribution system. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. So if your dry tongue weight (unloaded) is 250 lbs you could pretty easily find yourself over 400 when it's loaded and if you have cargo in the truck. Another option that I think would be ideal would be to go with the lower rated version of this system part # RP66082 which...

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Sway After Installing a Reese Strait-Line Weight Distribution System
It is interesting that you are experiencing more sway with the 1,200 lb Strait-Line # RP66084. Typically what we see is that weight distribution (WD) systems that are overrated for their towing setup cause the trailer to be more stiff. Nevertheless you do need to swap out the bars for part # RP22225 which would then make your tongue weight range 400 lbs - 800 lbs and would be a better fit for your application. Other things to help combat sway are making sure that your trailer is properly...

  • Selecting Weight Distribution Hitch for 2015 Toyota Tacoma Towing 2900-lb and 6500-lb Trailer
The key to choosing a weight distribution (WD) system is to know your trailer's actual fully-loaded tongue weight (TW) just as it will be when you head out. To this you need to add the weight of anything in the truck bed that sits behind the rear axle, such as a loaded cooler. Since you noted this is not usually the case with your truck then the actual measured TW of the fully-loaded trailer will give you the information you need. TW matters when choosing a WD system because you want to...
