Video Transcript for Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution EQ90-02-4300 Review

Today, we're going to be taking a look at the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank. This is designed for use with equalizer weight distribution system. It can be used in either the drop or rise position. It's constructed of a sturdy steel construction, and it's going to have a really nice clean welds on the unit. It is a solid shank design so nice solid piece. Overall, very strong and heavy duty design.

It has been dipped for corrosion resistance so it's going to do a great job resisting rust and corrosion. You can see here that we have a 6-hole adjustment design. The product's made right here in the USA. It's designed to slide inside of a 2 inch X 2 inch trailer hitch receiver. The maximum weight capacity is 14,000 pounds. Maximum tongue weight is 1,400 pounds.

A few measurements that we want to go over with real quick . If we take a look at the overall length, measuring from back to front, it's going to give us an overall length of 12 inches. Also want to take a measurement from the center of the hitch pin hole to the back of bar right here. That's going to measure 7 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the center of the adjustment hole is 8 inches. From the center of the hitch pin hole to the very front of the unit's going to be 9 inches.

We're going to have about 4 inches from the center of the hitch pin hole to the closet point of this back brace right here. When you're using this in the rise position with your head assembly at the highest setting, it's going to give you a maximum rise of about 10 inches from the top of the hitch receiver opening. If you flip it over to the drop position with the head assembly at the lowest setting, it's going to give you a maximum drop of about 6 inches. Again, we have 6 adjustment holes. Those are going to have whole diameter of 3/4 inch, and they're going to be separated apart from one another on center by an inch and quarter so that's going to be the incremental height adjustment. Again, overall, nice strong durable design and this is designed for the Equal-i-zer weight distribution systems. That's going to complete today's review of the Equal-i-zer Weight Distribution Shank..

I did not realize that I would need a longer shank when we switched tow vehicles, but the Nissan Armada receiver is actually higher than my GMC 2500HD. So much so that the 3" drop I was using didn't work. Fortunately eTrailer had this in stock and got it too me in 2 days (I had it expedited). It looks and works exactly like the Equalizer shank I had originally, but with a longer drop. 414359

Not sure what happened, but it collapsed during a vacation trip. Had to replace it with a solid shank which is much heavier, but did the job. Mobile technicial said he had never seen a hollow shank before. 634120

Comments

How heavy is the trailer you were pulling? This weight distributing shank is only rated for trailers with a 400 lb tongue weight/4000 lbs towing or less. If your trailer exceeded those specifications, the shank could indeed fail.

I purchased this to replace my 12” long hitch. This allowed me to keep my tailgate down and pull my camper. The hitch came in 2 days and took 10 min to swap the head from my Husky Weight Distribution Hitch. Still has the same 14,000lb rating as the 12” I took off. Of course my wife and kids were happy that we were able to take the golf cart for the first time with the camper. Great product! For reference, my truck is a 2015 Sierra 2500HD duramax pulling a 2018 Cruiser Embrace EL280 @ 6360lb dry. 628531

The first one they shipped was the wrong one. Called customer service on Wednesday had right one by Friday. Exchange/return was a minor inconvenience. I will give them great marks for their expedient handling as I needed it to set up hitch for weekend hunting excursion. Went from crossover to truck, thus the need for more drop. Went together with hitch head in about an hour and I was on my way. Thanks for the great service. 231281

We went from a 1994 Chevrolet C1500 to a 2018 F150. The receiver hitch was 3” higher on the Ford. The shank we had would not give me enough drop and the F150 tailgate could not be opened without hitting the RV’s tongue jack. This shank solved both problems. Excellent! 583955

Review from a similar Equal-i-zer Repl WD Shank in Accessories and Parts

My order (107131659) arrived, but after test-fitting the extended shank onto my vehicle, I only have 6" of clearance on level ground. This will definitely not suffice, given the slope of my driveway. I'm hoping to get some help. What I'm ultimately trying to do is get my tow vehicle & camper trailer's Equal-i-zer hitch set up correct so that the trailer couple and the vehicle hitch ball are relatively level with one another before the hitch is connected (as per Equal-i-zer's instructions). Unfortunately, this requires that I either lower the hitch (which, as I found, results in too low of clearance at the shank), or raise the trailer. Do you have any suggestions? What about an "axle swap," where the under-slung springs are moved to the top of the trailer's axles? Thank you for your assistance and any recommendations you may have. 575939

Comments

Depending on the diameter of your axle tube, it might be possible to swap the leaf springs from the underside to the top of the axle. This will gain you about the diameter of the axle as a gain in height. For a 2-38 inch diameter axle, use part K71-384-00 or for a 3 inch diameter axle, use K71-385-00.

Allows me to tow a travel trailer with my tailgate down (2011 Ram). I did not notice any difference in feel when towing compared to my previously shorter shank. There is no issue with the travel trailer hitting the tailgate- the length is perfect. This is much safer than using a hitch extender. The bolt pattern mated to my existing Husky brand hitch head. 386597

Toughest shanks on the planet that we have found for our customers come from etrailer and Equalizer (Progress Mfg). Don't let trying to save a few bucks put your rig at risk like the cast iron drawbar did in the photo below that was sent to me by a customer. If you buy the cheapest shanks, make sure you have good safety chains you will likely need them. Get the best from etrailer, Equalizer. 551524

I needed the extra length of this hitch shank to get my trailer hitch ball out from under the spare tire on my Jeep JK Wrangler Unlimited Rubicon. It works absolutely perfectly and is built extremely strong. I am using with an Equal-i-zer hitch system, but would be suitable for most other weight distributing hitch configurations if the centering between the adjustment holes is correct for your ball mount. 529658

Functionally the hitch is fine. The finish on it was very bad, it looks like they got the hitch from a scratch and dent sale and sprayed on some cheap paint. The hitch was supposed to be dipped but you could see the chipped paint underneath and smell the paint they put on it. I hope it will not rust out right away. 388918

Not much to you can say about a shank. However, the service was great. I had ordered a different (to short) shank from Amazon and it took a week to arrive and wasn't packed or wrapped with anything. The paint was chipped and the edges banged up so much it wouldn't go into the receiver with out filling the edges. etrailer had it delivered in 2 days and the custom packing was so so good I didn't think the box UPS deliver was the shank. Great job etrailer! You'll be the first place I now look for accessories for my truck and trailer. 223907

Review from a similar Equal-i-zer Repl WD Shank in Accessories and Parts

I have a 2500 gmc sierra short bed and travel trailer. We purchased a golf cart and wanted to take the cart with us as when camping sites allow golf carts. Since my bed is 78" long I have to take the front cover of the cart off ( ezgo rxv) and I have to remove the tailgate because there is not enough room to lower it because of my trailer's electric Jack stand. My original equalizer weight distribution shaft is 12" so this gives me an extra 6" so I can leave my tailgate on and down. I no longer need to take the front cover off of the cart and the rear wheels are completely on the truck. Thanks George 451315

I'm now able to open the tailgate of my truck with the trailer attached. Side effects of using the longer shank are; power cable almost too short and original safety chains were too short and had to be replaced. But, the goal to be able to open the tailgate with the trailer attached was accomplished. 396883

Quick shipping. Product as described. The box was partially ripped open, but its a huge chunk of steel in a cardboard box, no big deal. Went from a 1/2 ton Chevy to a 1 ton Ford, needless to say I needed a longer shank. It looks great, very happy. 381408

Since you most likely have the # EQ90-02-4500 which is what comes with the Equal-i-Zer kits the shank we offer that would give you a few more inches of drop would be the part # EQ90-02-4300 and you'd be set.

  • Weight Distribution System to Reduce Rear Sag in 2012 Chevy Suburban Towing Camper
  • If you already have the Roadmaster Active Suspension system # RAS4611 installed in your 2012 Suburban and you still have rear sag when your camper is hitched I recommend using a weight distribution/sway control (WD/SC) system if you do not already have one. You could add Timbrens but WD is a better option. Weight distribution will do more to level the Suburban and eliminate the rear sag than adding a set of Timbren jounce springs since WD/SC systems actually shift trailer tongue weight...

  • Weight Distribution System Recommendation for Trailer Weighing 9,000 lb
  • The best way to pick out a weight distribution system is to base it off of the loaded tongue weight of the setup when it is loaded and ready to tow. This figure also includes the weight of any cargo behind the rear axle of the tow vehicle. I attached a help article on determining tongue weight for you to check out as well. If you are able to use a lower setting on the shank, this should resolve the issue. If you find you need more drop than what your existing shank offers, you can also replace it with one like the # EQ90-02-4300 that provides up to a 6 inch drop. You should also to check to make sure that the load in your trailer is properly distributed....

  • The best option for you to use the Equal-i-zer 1,000 LB Weight Distribution System on your lifted 2004 Ford Excursion is to purchase the system without the shank using part # EQ37101ET and then choose the correct shank for you which should be the Equal-i-zer Weight Dist Shank part # EQ90-02-4300 as it offers up to a 6" drop.
