Video Transcript for Breaking Down the Chain Hangers for Curt Weight Distribution Systems

Hi, everybody. Andy here with etrailer.com. Let's take a brief look together at these chain hangers for your CURT Weight Distribution Systems. Now, as an alternative to traditional lift brackets, these bolt-on chain hangers are going to give you attachment points for your weight distribution spring bars. This is designed to work with your weight distribution systems with up to a 15,000-pound gross towing weight. And because these mount to the sides of your trailer frame, they're not going to interfere with frame-mounted items, so you're gonna get maximum clearance for items mounted above your trailer frame.

And this is going to be a quick bolt-on installation. Drilling is going to be required. I think I read in the instructions that if you're a novice installer, maybe take you up to about 40 to 45 minutes. If you're an expert installer, maybe closer to 15 to 20 minutes, just to kind of give you an idea of installation time. But this kit does include everything that you see here on my table before me.

You're going to receive two black powder coated steel chain hangers, so they're gonna be very durable, and that black powder is going to resist corrosion. And in regards to the hardware, I wanted to point out that these long bolts are gonna be used for trailers with tube frames, and then the shorter bolts will be used for trailers with C-channel frames, so you get the bolts for either. And then of course instructions are included to guide you through that simple installation process. Well, that's gonna wrap up our real quick look today. I do hope that our time together was helpful for you.

Again, my name is Andy. Thank you for joining me.

After a year, all is still good. Pretty much just bolt it on and its fine.

Worked for Me. Installation is not for the faint of heart, but I was successful measuring for the correct locations and drilling the four required holes in the HD steel trailer frame to install the chain hangers.

The anti-sway bar and weight distribution system has been a life saver for us. When my 7x14 dump trailer was fully loaded and hooked up to the Curt trailer hitch on my Ford F250 I was scared to drive more than 30mph. It was like the tail wagging the dog effect. After the load leveler and anti-sway bar was installed, it was smooth sailing even at hwy speeds. Thank you Curt Manufacturing.

As always etrailer has great service. Brackets work well for tight areas (my car hauler has a cross-member and toolbox preventing me from bolting on the clamp on snap up brackets- plus I only need for occasional use with heavier loads, so wanted as cheap as possible way to reuse the load bars for my camper on the car trailer) Also, these brackets are more of a pain to hookup as you have to jack up the tongue and rear of truck to hook the bars and lower the weight on them- and much harder and time consuming if trailer is already loaded (snap up brackets are a better option, if you can use them in your installation) but these are solid, strong and simple as they come, reasonably priced, and they get the job done.

by:

I got the chain hangers yesterday and mounted them on my V neck cargo trailer. Took the trailer out for a test run. they work great and seam to be well built. I still have to mount the sway bar and test it. I'm sure it will improve towing in the High winds in West Texas.

by:

I'm not crazy about having to drill more holes in my trailer frame but, since my v-nose won't accept the clamp on lift brackets, I'm glad this product exists.

by:

They do exactly what they’re meant to do. Much more annoying to attach the chains to than the usual lever-action brackets, but those don’t always fit.

by:

Chain Hanger & Ball Lock were just as described at a good price an quick shipment just as previous orders. Highly recommend etrailer.com

by:

I received the brackets today and installed them today as well. I hooked up the trailer and they preformed as they should. I had a real concern on the amount of time it took to get here. It took 7 days to reach the city in washington that I
live and another 5 days to get to my house.

by:

The product will fit just fine once we get the 17/32" drill bit we need to drill the holes. Apparently this drill bit is not a common size in any of the sets at our house, our fire department tools, local hardware store or even [other stores] do not carry it in store. So it needs to be ordered and shipped. So if ordering this make sure you have a 17/32" drill bit or order one at the same time. So you're not having to order one after you get it and see the instruction needing one and to wait 3 more days after getting this to install it.

by:

These are just what you need if you don't have clearance on your tongue for standard chain hangers. Well made, 1/2 the price of competitor.

by:

Perfect. One year later not a speck of rust. The price and one-day delivery were fantastic. Can't beat it.

by:

Great product and quick shipping! Definitely a great company!

by:

by:

The hooks were delivered very promptly and were well packaged. It looks like the quality is excellent. I can see why etrailer was recommended to me.

by:

by:

Everything was perfect as delivered. Delivery was fast, just took a couple days to get my parts in hand. Now I can work on it over the weekend! Excellent help and perfect product as always.

by:

Good quality, clear instructions, and easy to install.

by:

great service

by:

Just what I needed. Hard to find item that worked perfectly for my application.

by:

Worked perfect for me. Not enough room on my tongue for the clamp ons. After 4000 miles towing with them they still look great.

by:

  • Solution For Weight Distribution Hitch That Cannot Use Regular Clamp-On Brackets
Hello Valerie, thanks for reaching out. I do have a solution for this, and that is to use bolt-on chain hangers like part # C17005. These brackets bolt to the side of the frame and give you an attachment point for a WD hitch. The Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17050 is what goes with it. This WD hitch is for trailers with a tongue weight between 500 and 600 lbs. What kind of trailer are you using this with? Do you know your approximate loaded tongue weight?

  • Troubleshooting Surt Chain Hangers Not Having Room to Fit on Trailer Tongue
Hey Robert, thanks for reaching out! The 10K Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Sway Control # C17322 is going to have arms that sit closer to the coupler than pretty much every other weight distribution system on the market. With this setup the hangers are going to sit 30-5/8" out from the coupler (see attached photo). If the problem is that you don't have enough space on top of your frame for the clamps, then I recommend looking into the Curt Chain Hangers # C17005 which...

  • Weight Distribution For 6,000 lb Trailer With Short A-Frame
So what you'll have to do is use the Chain Hangers # C17005 and bolt them onto your trailer frame. I will also say it's very important you contact the trailer manufacturer to see if the trailer is rated for use with weight distribution because not all aluminum trailers are. Then for a 6,000 lb trailer you would use the Curt MV Weight Distribution # C17051 and instead of using the brackets it comes with you'll use the chain hangers. The only other thing you'll need is the hitch ball, either...

  • Weight Distribution Recommendation for 2019 Airstream Nest
Hey Steve, you are on the right track for sure. Since you have clearance issues with your camper you would need to go with a set of bolt on style WD brackets to get around that like with the Curt brackets part # C17005 that you referenced. Then a weight distribution system like the part # C17050 would be a great solution that is rated properly. What size hitch ball do you need?

  • Recommended Weight Distribution Hitch For An Enclosed Car Hauler V-Nose Trailer
With your trailer tongue having a frame beam running down the center of the tongue the B&W Continuum isn't going to be a viable option. You'll need to look at a hitch like the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System with Shank # C17332. The spring bars are approximately 28-3/8" in length so you'll want to measure how much length you have from the coupler to body of the trailer to see if this will work. If there's enough length but you can't use the clamp on frame brackets then you can...

  • Can I Use a Weight Distribution Hitch on a Large Aluminum Trailer
When it comes to using a weight distribution hitch on your aluminum trailer, the main concern isn't only the interaction of the two metals but a lot of occasions the aluminum frame isn't strong enough to be used with a steel weight distribution system. You will want to consult with the trailer's manufacturer to determine if your trailer can be used with a weight distribution system. For a trailer with a larger frame size you would need a weight distribution hitch that used chain hangers...

I may have a solution for you on this, but you're not going to be able to use the Curt # C17501 in the manner you've mentioned since the brackets will need to be 4" from the end of the spring bars to provide proper leverage to the system. It sounds like you're looking for something like the Curt Short-Arm Weight Distribution System # C17422, which is designed specifically for trailers like this and will work on trailers with a tongue weight between 1000-lbs and 1500-lbs. • How To Obtain the Offset Lift Brackets for a Curt MV Weight Distribution System
Yes, the offset lift brackets listed in the manual for the Curt MV Weight Distribution Systems like part # C17063 are the Chain Hangers for Curt Weight Distribution Systems part # C17005 which bolt to the side of the trailer frame. If you cannot mount the clamp-on lift brackets on top of the frame due to obstructions then these bolt-on lift brackets are your only option.

  • Can the Chain Hangers for Curt Weight Distribution Systems Be Welded To the Frame
The Chain Hangers for Curt Weight Distribution Systems part # C17005 can be welded to the trailer frame if that is the method you prefer over drilling. That said, most customers do not have the means of welding so drilling is easier. In regards to weakening the frame, this should not be an issue for either method of instillation but if you are capable I would recommend welding. If you do decide to drill holes, just be sure to leave the bolts in the frame even if you remove the bracket.

  • Can Curt Short Arm Weight Distribution be Used on V-Nose Trailer With 25-1/2 Inches of Clearance
Thank you for that photo, and we do have a solution here for you that will allow you to use the Curt Short-Arm system you mentioned, though you are right that as it is the arms are too long for your 25-1/2 inches of clearance. So what you will need to do is add chain hangers to the side of your trailer frame; you will bolt these onto your frame and this will give you a way to mount the Curt system. • Curt Short-Arm VS Regular Weight Distribution System Spring Bar Length
The standard spring bar length for Curt trunnion bar weight distribution systems is 30-5/8 inches. Anything that has 28-3/8 inch long bars is a short bar system even if it does not explicitly state it. What you might be able to do is use chain hangers # C17005 in place of the brackets that mount on the trailer. These hangers will mount to the sides of the frame so provided that the sides of the frame are clear you can use these hangers. The other option is to replace the system you have...

Appreciate the photo, and yes you can, but you'll need to use bolt-on chain hangers if there is interference that won't allow the brackets to mount to the top of the tongue 28" back. So you'd need to bolt on the chain hangers to the side of the frame (or the side of the trailer frame just behind the tongue if that is where you are measuring 28 inches) in order to use the system. For the actual weight distribution system, I recommend the Curt Weight Distribution System with Shank item # C17341. • Can Weight Distribution System Be Used on Aluminum Frame Trailer
Thank you for the photo of your enclosed trailer's tongue area and the measurement of your frame access for using a weight distribution (WD) system.
