Can Weight Distribution System Be Used on Aluminum Frame Trailer

Updated 06/19/2019 | Published 06/17/2019

Question:

Hi guys, I’m looking for a WDH with some anti-sway that can mount to my new V-Nose EZ Hauler. There is very little room on the A frame to mount anything. About 25” of frame measured ball to trailer body see pic. My old WDH with chains won’t fit. If it matters, I would love an anti-away option that does not require disengagement upon entering town/gas station. Another consideration is that I’m using a 4” hitch right now. Any less of a and the back of the trailer will scrape my driveway. Any more of a and the tongue jack will scrape....

Thank you for the photo of your enclosed trailer's tongue area and the measurement of your frame access for using a weight distribution (WD) system.

Often trailers like yours that use aluminum construction for less weight are not recommended for use with WD systems since the steel WD hitch can apply too much force on the aluminum frame. Before installing any WD system on your trailer I recommend you check with the manufacturer using the trailer VIN. In some cases a specific aluminum trailer's frame tubing may be thick enough for use with WD but I strongly urge you to verify this before using one.

If you get the all-clear to use one you'll want to measure your actual loaded trailer tongue weight (TW) using the scale # e99044 so you can choose a properly rated system such as the Curt Short Arm # C17330 which works for TW up to 600-lbs and with which you can use bolt-on chain hangers # C17005 that help when there is limited frame access.
