Weight Distribution Diagram

Create a more stable ride for your tow vehicle and trailer with a weight distribution hitch. Adding spring bars to your towing system applies leverage, which transfers the load that is pushing down on the rear of your vehicle to all the axles on both your tow vehicle and your trailer, resulting in an even distribution of weight throughout. The result is a smooth, level ride, as well as the ability to tow the maximum capacity of your hitch.

Selecting a Weight Distribution System

The tongue weight rating is the most important factor in determining which size weight distribution system you should use. If the bars of the system you choose are rated too high for your setup, they will create a rigid ride, which can result in a bouncing trailer. If, on the other hand, the bars are not rated high enough, the system will be unable to properly distribute the weight, rendering it virtually useless.

To determine the proper weight rating for a weight distribution system, you must first determine your trailer's tongue weight. Then add to that the weight of the cargo behind the rear axle of your tow vehicle. These two measurements make up the tongue weight rating for a weight distribution system.

Forged Steel Spring Bars

The round spring bars are made from forged steel, giving them a distinct advantage over typical cast steel bars. Forging is a process where thermal and mechanical energy are applied to the steel, resulting in a finished product that is more resilient to impacts and is stronger in terms of shear strength. Simply put, these spring bars do a superior job of helping to hold your trailer in line because of their added strength and durability.

Built-In Grease Zerks

Built-in grease zerk on the Curt weight distribution system head assembly

The system's head features 2 built-in grease zerks so that you can easily lubricate the spring bars without having to remove them from the head assembly. The grease zerks are located on each of the shafts that encase the spring bars. Simply use a grease gun (sold separately) to inject grease into each of the zerks.

I received the beat up but we'll taped packed with all the parts included.

I bought a new travel trailer recently. This weight distribution hitch restored my tow vehicle front axle weight to it's original unhitched weight and also to it's unhitched front axle wheel well height measurement. I also was able to load 300lbs of cargo to the front of the travel trailer and only measured a 1/2 inch of increase to the front axle wheel well height.

Equalizer hitch works well

by:

Staff was helpful in helping me select product and accessories I needed for my Installation. My trailer has a tool box where the load hangers needed to be. A different mount solved the problem. Both etrailer and load equalizer get 5 stars. I’m on their mailing list and they carry an extensive line of products, many that I was totally unaware of. This opens new possibilities for future purchases.

I use my truck to tow a 14,000 GVWR trailer and needed an equalizer hitch for towing heavy loads. I pulled the trailer heavily loaded for over 2000 miles while bucking 20 to 30 mph headwinds and crosswinds. It tracked like it was on rails and strong wind gusts were hardly noticeable.

etrailer also has great articles regarding towing and other products they carry.

Have used the hitch quite a bit in the past year with some pretty heavy loads. It has performed flawlessly and I couldn’t be happier. Would purchase this hitch again.

by:

I've waited to write his review until I could comment on both etrailer's service and the hitch's performance. First the service: I couldn't believe how quickly this 100 lb. box arrived--two days! Everything was intact and nothing was missing. The customer support of these folks is just incredible. Their prices were as low as I found anywhere, and with their quality service I bought everything I needed here.

Now the hitch. I bought the Curt C17057 WD hitch which has 1400# round bars, plus a pair of Husky friction sway bars for my 25 foot Airstream towed with a 2013 F-150 CrewCab. It's a really nice hitch/TT/TV combination. It controls sway really well, is virtually noise free and transfers weight appropriately, plus isn't nearly as heavy as the ProPride/Hensley hitches. I selected the Curt, in part, because it has grease zerks on the head, while some other candidates didn't. I couldn't be more satisfied!

One year later, the Curt weight distribution hitch is performing perfectly. It does a good job of transferring weight to the tow vehicle, is quiet and was relatively easy to dial in exactly for my vehicle trailer combination.I coupled it with two Husky anti-sway friction bars, although I have only installed one of them because that has proven enough for my 25 foot trailer. An Eaz-Lift Husky anti-sway bar combination was suggested for me by AndyThomson of CanAm RV, but I substituted the Curt because I liked the greasezerks on the Curt. The Curt is a really well-made unit. Id buy it again,as well as the Huskys, which Ive found to be quiet and effective.

Box was destroyed but parts were still in good condition with no scratches. Kind of impressive!

by:

Fast Service at a great price. Box arrived is great shape.
Heavy duty parts for sure, almost 90 lbs.
Did not install it yet, still building shelving in the new trailer so we have not got the final load in it to adjust the spring bars. Will get back when we get the trailer loaded.

It has been a Year since putting this hitch in service, all is working perfectly. It did take an hour to set it up properly the first time for the height of my truck. You have the height and the tilt to get the spring bars the proper tension. All is good. Great Product at a great price.

by:

Tongue weight of old trailer was 350 lbs. new trailer loaded up was 1100 lbs. Bought a new distribution hitch with 1400 lbs. rating to be sure it was adequate. Easy to fallow instructions for first time setup. No problems, works great.

by:

Very happy with the price and product

by:

It is easy to use and built well. One issue though when I originally set it up I tightened the saddle pieces to the torque recommended on the instructions. The threads started to strip. I fixed it with nuts and have used it since. I did call your company to make sure I did it right (the instructions were a little confusing on that part to me anyway). The lady I spoke to said I got it right and I did ask for a new part but decided to use it anyway with the intent to call back. This really was a little issue other then that for the price it was a great setup.

No problems with it. I have at least 10k miles towed with it.

by:

It works well. Your videos were a big help on initial installation. I also had to put a sway bar on my camper. If I were to do it over again I would have gotten the weight distribution system that includes the sway bar functionality. I discovered that system after I purchased the the weight distribution hitch. Overall the weight distribution system works very well. If you don’t need a sway bar, I highly recommend it.

by:

Best hitch I've ever owned! I previously bought and used extensively a Curt 5th wheel hitch which was perfect. Both have been great performers...I tow without hitch problems or worries.

by:

I missed the fact that this doesn't come with a hitch ball. It's obvious now looking at the listing with that in mind - and they aren't that hard to come by locally, but I'm lucky that I'm not too far from civilization right now!

So be sure to get a hitch ball, too!

Other than that, easy to assemble and works fine, just like the other one of these that I previously bought (that did come with a hitch ball...weird!)

by:

This seems to be a nice hitch system. Appears well made. Doesn’t seem junky. It’s heavy enough to kill a guy (literally). I’m not really well rehearsed in different systems but this works quite well for what I use it for (10k equipment trailer). It went together easy (you will need massive wrenches/ratchet/sockets to snug everything up, 1 1/2”+) but handles my trailer well. I’d recommend it for the price.

by:

I bought this to use on my Chevy 2500 HD for towing a 11,000 lbs. travel trailer with a 1300 lbs. tongue weight (dry weights). You always want to buy one rated a little higher than what you should need. I used it once so far, towing the trailer roughly 200 miles. It works perfectly keeping the trailer and truck level, just as it should. I found it very easy to assemble and use, with very clear instructions. (Hint: read completely through the instructions before you begin assembly. Bolts will not be tightened until later to allow for adjustments).

by:

Purchasing this product from e-trailer was very professional and pleasant. The product was shipped out in a very timely manner at a very minimal expense and arrived at my door as stated it would. The price was unbeatable for the product and is a very good quality weight distribution hitch. All parts were there with instructions how to install. I would recommend anyone looking for trailer parts to go to e-trailer for their next purchase.

by:

We haul horses all around the country. Our truck has a slide in camper in the bed which requires us to use a 48" extension and w weight distribution system. The Curt system was east to install, has better tolerances than others we have used. Excellent value, we would buy it again without hesitation

by:

I was a little worried about setting up my first weight distribution hitch, but the instructions were clear and useful. I did have to give it a couple of tried to get the height right, but I worked out well. Would definitely recommend. And free shipping?!?!?! Sheesh, this thing is heavy. I'll definitely order from etrailer again,

by:

For the amount of money these are, I had to use shims to keep the ball portion from wobbling in the drop down side of the hitch very disappointed and annoying every time I have to slide the ball around

by:

Purchased a weight distribution kit and it was shipped and delivered within a couple days. Customer Service was excellent and their products are of good quality. I really like their website as they carry a lot of useful products. I have and will continue to recommend etrailer.

by:

The Curt weight distribution system with round drop down spring bar worked to solve trailer frame clearance issue I had with old style sprig bar.

by:

Since we bought a new travel trailer that weighs twice as much as our old one, it occurred to me that our old weight distribution hitch might be too light. I ordered this 14,000 lb rated hitch and it truly is stout. It arrived in a couple of days, securely packed with great instructions on its use. This hitch is similar in design to our old one, except that its much heavier steel and this hitch has a height adjustment for different height trucks/trailers. The price was awesome. I really couldn't be happier.

by:

Very pleased with the order. The weight distribution package a bit for wear.
I realize the weight is a factor, which contributes to the slight marring and scratching of parts, totally acceptable. The installation instructions were mutilated. Thats ok by me as I already know the product. Maybe placing it between 2 pieces of cardboard would help.
Happy trails

by:

I have been using this on my 14000 lb dump trailer for a year now and have been very happy with it.

by:

Fair price works well my 13.5 k trailer doesn't sag at all might want to consider a stabilizer/ sway control I notice on a windy highway I get alittle drift my trailer is 39 feet long wich may be a factor too

by:

Hitch working with no issues. I have a 24 ft enclosed race trailer and I haul with a yukon. This hitch makes hauling easy and smooth.
