Solution For Weight Distribution Hitch That Cannot Use Regular Clamp-On Brackets

Published 07/21/2025

Question:

I am trying to find a weight distribution hitch for my horse trailer. All of them look like they clamp on to an open framed tongue but my trailer has a steel plate surface with no way to clamp. Is there a kind that gets welded to the frame?

Hello Valerie, thanks for reaching out. I do have a solution for this, and that is to use bolt-on chain hangers like part # C17005. These brackets bolt to the side of the frame and give you an attachment point for a WD hitch. The Curt MV Weight Distribution System # C17050 is what goes with it. This WD hitch is for trailers with a tongue weight between 500 and 600 lbs.

What kind of trailer are you using this with? Do you know your approximate loaded tongue weight?

It is a small steel 2 horse bumper pull. The weight tag is worn, but it seems like it is heavier tongue weight than that if I can see the writing right. I took a picture of the tag if I can attach it so you can see if it seems right that the tongue weight is 1050#

@ValerieH Hey Valerie, there is no way to add pictures on here (yet) but you can email that to me at [email protected] and I am happy to see what I can see. If the tongue weight is above 1,000 lbs, you will want to use the following WD hitch: - Curt MV Weight Distribution System - Round Bar - 14,000 lbs GTW, 1,400 lbs TW # C17057

Will that chain hanger work with Curt hitch C75RJ? It looks like that is for heavier tongue weight

@ValerieH No, it will not. The bolt-on hangers I mentioned will only work with the Curt MV Weight Distribution System like the # C17057 I mentioned. The # C75RJ would be correct for your trailer as far as tongue weight, but it sounds like you would have no way to install the frame brackets since they bolt around the frame.
