Optronics MCL36 Series Stud Mount Side Marker and Clearance Light Diagram

P2-Rated Lights

Diagram of light spread for P2 rated light

A P2-rated light produces a 45-degree angle of light to either side of its centerline for a total of 90 degrees of coverage. This beam pattern can be seen straight on, but it cannot be seen clearly from the side. So this type of light can be used as either a side marker light or a clearance light, but it cannot function as both. If you need both functions, then you must install 2 separate lights on your trailer - one as a front or rear clearance light and one as a side marker light.

A good replacement for the old bulb Clearance lights.

by:

My two year old yacht club trailer side marker lights had a mind of their own and would inadvertently decide to energize or not. The bulbs could not be replaced as these were a one piece unit.I ordered two LED marker lights from etrailer and after replacing the incandescent fixtures I haven't had an issue. I predict my rear lights being next.

by:

This is a nice quality light and the LED aspect of it is sweet. I am holding back a star because the black wire that powers the light is ridiculously short. If you are running the light out on a fender, you have to split your wire harness and send the brown wire to it. If the manufacturer had spent another one tenth of a cent and made the black wire longer, it would have been better. Also, the back of the light, the grooves for the wire are a bit shallow. Difficult to get the light to sit properly. Once it's up and running it's quite sharp.

by:

Easy to install and wire on my basic 5'x8' utility trailer, great product for the price.

by:

exact replacement. thank you

by:

Excellent lights. Replaced old broken incandescent lights with these LED light. Quick easy replacement.

by:

Nice bright L.E.D. clearance lights.
Low
drain on your battery.
Works great on the golf cart I am refurbishing.

by:

Just what I needed and speedy delivery!

by:

After one year of use all LED lights work flawlessly. They were an exact replacement for original. Can't be more pleased with the product and etrailer company!

Trailer is fully led from etrailer and still working flawless even after rough use. Great product!

by:

Just what I needed and very quick to sh ip.

by:

I got fed up with the bulbs losing contact in the stock clearance lights that came installed on my trailer. These were the solution. The LEDs should last a good long time and vibration won't be an issue. They are plenty bright enough as far as I'm concerned. As inexpensive as they are, they still seem to be fairly well made. A couple of self-drilling screws for the ground leads, a couple of crimp connectors and some heat shrink tubing for the power leads were all I needed to complete the swap. I'm totally satisfied. If these lights fit your application, buy them.

Still rock solid after a year installed.

by:

This is the expedition trailer you helped me build............Thanks.

by:

Installed this and several other lights on a new trailer. Factory lighting and wiring left a lot to be desired, and with the help of etrailer.com I was able to get everything fixed up like I wanted.

Lights work very well - clear and bright yellow clearance markers.

All of the products I purchased its been about 2 years now are still working great. Thanks for checking in.

by:

Very easy to install with the center post / bolt just like the marker lights I was replacing, Just had to add a ground (drill a hole to attach the ground wire to the frame). This is an extremely bright led- way brighter than the incandescent one I replaced and hopefully will last the life of the trailer (no more bulbs to replace!)

Its been a year and they are still going strong.

by:

Replaced all of the lights on my utility trailer, whose incondescent bulbs were constantly breaking, with LED lights and fixtures. The LED lights are bright and dependable. The onboard computer senses when the trailer is attached and works fine with the LEDs. I'm very pleased that I made this switch and with the parts provided by etrailer.com. Good quality parts at reasonable prices.

by:

These lights were replacements for bulb-type clearance lights on a 4' by 8' utility trailer. The original lights were OK but beat up by string trimmers over the years.

These lights were an exact fit and installed perfectly. They are at least twice as bright as the originals. When the time comes to replace the tail lights, I will go with LEDs as well.

The most time consuming part of installation was trying to find my wire splicing hardware (cable-to-cable connectors) and I would suggest you bundle these with the lights for convenience.

by:

6 LED marker lights perfect upgrade for my 2004 utility trailer replacing factory incandescent bulbs. Much easier to see trailer when pulling and backing at night. Much safer for others to quickly spot my trailer in bad weather conditions... much BRIGHTER !

Unlike others manufacturers, there is more than enough wire to allow easy soldering along with a ring terminal which guarantees a perfect ground to trailer.

Always quick shipping

It has hold up well. Even in saltwater use the lights have not failed in a year usage.

by:

Had a little problem with shipping, tracking showed lights were delivered, however never arrived at my location. Emailed eTrailer with my problem and they shipped replacement units immediately. Fair pricing, quick turnaround, and great people to work with. Quality of marker lights was as advertized. 100% satisfied.

by:

As always from etrailer.com, the product exceeded expectations. I had a minor accident with my trailer and needed a new running light on only 1 side of the trailer. When the lights arrived (within a very few days) I installed the new light to replace the broken unit. To my surprise, although the etrailer light looks identical to the original in both size and shape, it is at least 3 times brighter than the identical original equipment (OEM) light that sits on the opposite side of the trailer. So I guess one could easily conclude the etrailer light is about 3 times better than the OEM light. Needless to say, I am very pleased with the LED light, the Customer Service lady who helped me match just the right light to my OEM trailer, the super fast shipping, great prices and a great inventory. I don't know why anyone would go anywhere else to buy their trailer parts. Etrailer.com has it all!

by:

I wanted to replace the finicky original incadescent lights on my utility trailer. I ordered a pair of these to go with the LED trailer light kit. Once I figured out how to use the ScotchLok wire connectors (included with the trailer kit) it was easy to hook these up. It is great to have four lights all working correctly at the same time.

by:

Needed new marker lights for a utility trailer. These are an exact replacement. I connected the white lead (ground/negative) to the mounting stud. LEDs provide good light for visibility and reflectors are bright. I liked them so much that I ordered a second pair for another trailer.

by:

Using these as side marker lights on my jetski trailer. The old light used the mounting stud for ground, these lights have a separate ground wire with a ring terminal on it. No problem, just had to drill a hole to screw the ring terminal to the trailer frame. Lights are bright. I took the lens cover off, the LEDs and circuit board are potted to prevent water from corroding them. So these lights should survive dunking in the lake/river/ocean.

  • Why Does Ground Wire Corrode on Aluminum Trailer
Thank you for the photo and what is causing the ground wire is the aluminum trailer; it's called galvanic corrosion and is an unfortunate side effect of having an aluminum trailer. This happening once every 18 months or so sounds about right and the truth is there simply is no fix for this. You'll have to just use a wire brush and remove the white powder - the corrosion - and then re-attach the ground. I know it's an inconvenience but it is the only thing you can do in this case.

  • Is the Ground Wire Needed for the Square LED Trailer Clearance and Side Marker Light to Work
Yes, the second wire will need to be grounded to complete the circuit for the LED Clearance Light, # MCL36AB. If your trailer connector has a ground wire that is connected to the trailer frame at the front of the trailer, you will be able to just secure the ring terminal on the LED trailer clearance light, # MCL36AB, to the trailer frame with the light mounting bolt or a self tapping screw (not included). If your trailer connector does not have a ground attached to the trailer frame you...

  • Can Clearance Light with Black and White Wires Replace Light with 2 Green/Brown Wires
Yes, the replacement light will still work. Although there are common colors for the wiring on a trailer, nothing is set in stone so the colors of the wiring can vary. Just be sure to ground the white wire of the Optronics Square LED Trailer Clearance Light # MCL36AB to a clean, bare-metal surface to avoid shorts on your light circuit.

  • Can Trailer Lights Ground to Frame of Trailer As Well as Ground Wire of Connector
You can ground your trailer lights to the frame of the trailer or back to the ground circuit that the trailer wiring connector has. The main ground strap from your wiring connector connects to the frame which basically makes anything that touches the frame grounded.

  • Square LED Trailer Clearance Light Compatibility with a 24 Volt System
I am sorry, but no, the MCL36AB LED bulb will not work with a 24 volt system. It is a 12.8 volt bulb. As far as the life expectancy, there is a lifetime warranty on the LED bulbs; but please do not attempt to use them with your 24 volt system. They will not work, and may completely compromise the system.

  • Can I Ground Trailer Lights To Trailer's Main Ground
You can ground all of the trailer lights like part # MCL36AB to the main ground on the trailer. We normally recommend to attach the grounds to a clean bare metal surface of the trailer frame for a better connection. If you have ground issues after connecting the grounds to the main ground, I recommend to ground to the frame.

The reason some lights have two wires and others only have one wire is because some lights ground through the mounting studs (one wire lights) while other lights have two wires, a power wire and a ground wire. If your old lights were one wire lights and you wanted to use a Square LED Trailer Clearance, part # MCL36AB, you could run the ground wire to the mounting stud for the light and you would be good to go. While we don't have a video showing how to install the Optronics Trailer Clearance or Side Marker Light w/ Reflector # MC76AB, I can tell you that the black wire needs to be connected to your trailer running light circuit and then the hardware used to mount it needs to be installed on a clean, bare-metal surface because that is how the light grounds. • How Do I Convert My Incandescent Trailer Lights to LED Lights
Yes, you just have to remove the old lights, match the wires and mount the new ones. Please note, that it is usually not a good idea to mix LEDs and incandescent lights, so if you have have side markers or other lights on the trailer, make sure you switch those to LEDs as well. Incandescent lights draw much more amperage than LEDs do, and if they pull that current through the LED fixtures, the LEDs could burn up.
