Optronics MCL36 Series Stud Mount Side Marker and Clearance Light Diagram

P2-Rated Lights

Diagram of light spread for P2 rated light

A P2-rated light produces a 45-degree angle of light to either side of its centerline for a total of 90 degrees of coverage. This beam pattern can be seen straight on, but it cannot be seen clearly from the side. So this type of light can be used as either a side marker light or a clearance light, but it cannot function as both. If you need both functions, then you must install 2 separate lights on your trailer - one as a front or rear clearance light and one as a side marker light.

  • Not Getting Turn Signal Function When Using LED Bulbs On A Trailer
LED bulbs have little resistance on their own, so when used with turn signals they can create a hyper flash situation, which is a fast flashing of the bulb. To determine if you will need a load-resistor kit like a LED Light Bulb Load-Resistor Kit # DI34ZR, you will install the bulbs and when the turn signals are activated, if the bulbs hyper flash you will need to install the load-resistor kit. This kit will prevent the turn signals from hyper flashing. You will need one kit for each LED...

  • Replacement J-1024-A Side Marker Light
Hey Larry! I checked with the manufacturer and the lens is not available for individual purchase but we do have a replacement for the side light. It's the Optronics LED Clearance or Side Marker Light w/ Reflex Reflector item # MCL36AB. This is an almost identical replacement except for the LED upgrade and it being an 1/8" wider. The replacement lens for it item # A36AB isn't going to fit your J-1024-A.

  • Replacement LED Taillights for 1999 ShoreLand'r Boat Trailer
Looking at old pictures it appears as though your 1999 ShoreLand'r had rectangular lights like the Optronics LED Combination Trailer Tail Lights # TLL160RK. This includes the driver and passenger side lights. These are sealed and submersible so they're perfect for your boat trailer. They measure 8-1/16" long x 2-7/8" tall x 2-13/16" deep which I believe will fit nicely on your existing bracket. If you have other LED lights on the trailer you will want to swap those out as well so you don't...

  • Available Running/Clearance Lights for 1995 Featherlite 2 Horse Trailer
We have all types of lighting and other specialized products for horse trailers like your 1995 Featherlite. I linked our main page for horse trailer products and also our specific page for clearance lights. We have both standard incandescent bulb and high-efficiency LED types (that use much less power) in many shapes and lens colors. For a low-cost rectangular incandescent amber clearance light we have # MC48AB from Optronics. This uses mounting screws that are spaced apart 3-3/8-inches...

  • How To Ground Trailer Tail Lights Without a Ground Wire To a Wooden Surface
The Standard Trailer Light Kit with 25' Wire Harness part # TL29BK as I am sure you noticed grounds via the mounting hardware therefore there is not a singular ground wire. In order to attach this light to a wooden surface you will need to run a ground wire yourself up to the trailer tongue using the mounting studs on the back with ring terminals part # DW05705-1 and wire part # 12-1-1. The other option you have is to use the Peterson LED Light Kit for Trailers part # V944 which does have...

  • Is the Ground Wire Needed for the Square LED Trailer Clearance and Side Marker Light to Work
Yes, the second wire will need to be grounded to complete the circuit for the LED Clearance Light, # MCL36AB. If your trailer connector has a ground wire that is connected to the trailer frame at the front of the trailer, you will be able to just secure the ring terminal on the LED trailer clearance light, # MCL36AB, to the trailer frame with the light mounting bolt or a self tapping screw (not included). If your trailer connector does not have a ground attached to the trailer frame you...

  • How to Install 1-Wire Optronics Trailer Clearance or Side Marker Light w/ Reflector
While we don't have a video showing how to install the Optronics Trailer Clearance or Side Marker Light w/ Reflector # MC76AB, I can tell you that the black wire needs to be connected to your trailer running light circuit and then the hardware used to mount it needs to be installed on a clean, bare-metal surface because that is how the light grounds. Similar to the attached install video of the Optronics light # MCL36AB but different in that this light actually has a ground wire.

  • Troubleshooting Trailer Lighting Where Only One Running Light Works
Since all of your trailer lights operate properly with the exception of one of the running lights, this tells us that the vehicle wiring harness is probably working properly. I would first carefully check the bad light's ground and power wires to ensure that both are secured. If the light uses a separate ground wire, usually a white wire like on # MCL36AB, that ground wire needs to be affixed to the trailer frame, to a clean rust-free bare metal surface. If the light is the type that uses...

  • How Do I Convert My Incandescent Trailer Lights to LED Lights
Yes, you just have to remove the old lights, match the wires and mount the new ones. Please note, that it is usually not a good idea to mix LEDs and incandescent lights, so if you have have side markers or other lights on the trailer, make sure you switch those to LEDs as well. Incandescent lights draw much more amperage than LEDs do, and if they pull that current through the LED fixtures, the LEDs could burn up. We have LED side markers and clearance lights like part # MCL36AB and part...

  • Armored LED Clearance Light # 424000 Recommendation for a 2007 Jumping Jack Trailer
The reason some lights have two wires and others only have one wire is because some lights ground through the mounting studs (one wire lights) while other lights have two wires, a power wire and a ground wire. If your old lights were one wire lights and you wanted to use a Square LED Trailer Clearance, part # MCL36AB, you could run the ground wire to the mounting stud for the light and you would be good to go. We do not sell rock guards for the # MCL36AB, but we do sell armored clearance...

  • Is The Optronics LED Clearance or Side Marker Light # MCL36AB Submersible?
The Optronics LED Clearance or Side Marker Light # MCL36AB is not submersible. The Peterson Piranha LED Clearance or Side Marker Light # M170A is going to be the closest light we have to the same dimensions which is going to be submersible.

  • Why Does Ground Wire Corrode on Aluminum Trailer
Thank you for the photo and what is causing the ground wire is the aluminum trailer; it's called galvanic corrosion and is an unfortunate side effect of having an aluminum trailer. This happening once every 18 months or so sounds about right and the truth is there simply is no fix for this. You'll have to just use a wire brush and remove the white powder - the corrosion - and then re-attach the ground. I know it's an inconvenience but it is the only thing you can do in this case.

  • Availability of Optronics LED Trailer Clearance Lamp # MCL71RB in Amber
The closest thing we have to the # MCL71RB in amber would be the Optronics # MCL36AB, which is also available in red as part # MCL36RB. The lamps are a bit smaller than the # MCL71RB at 2-7/8 by 2-1/8 inches. Optronics doesn't offer that lamp in amber as an LED version.

  • Can Clearance Light with Black and White Wires Replace Light with 2 Green/Brown Wires
Yes, the replacement light will still work. Although there are common colors for the wiring on a trailer, nothing is set in stone so the colors of the wiring can vary. Just be sure to ground the white wire of the Optronics Square LED Trailer Clearance Light # MCL36AB to a clean, bare-metal surface to avoid shorts on your light circuit.

  • Can Trailer Lights Ground to Frame of Trailer As Well as Ground Wire of Connector
You can ground your trailer lights to the frame of the trailer or back to the ground circuit that the trailer wiring connector has. The main ground strap from your wiring connector connects to the frame which basically makes anything that touches the frame grounded.

  • Parts Needed to Replace Lights and Rewire a 1993 Econoline Car Trailer
To rewire your 1993 Econoline car trailer, I recommend using the LED Combination Tail Light Kit # TLL9RK. This kit will include the lights and wiring needed to rewire your trailer. The wiring will splice into your junction box. If you do not already have a junction box, you can pick up the Trailer Wiring Junction Box # 3375601101. Having a junction box makes dealing with the wiring on your trailer easier. If you already have or want to add clearance lights, I recommend the Optronics LED...

  • LED Trailer Lights Not Working
Thanks for your recent purchase! This sounds like a ground issue. Ground problems normally show up when there is more draw on a system such as when you have the running lights on and then use another function like a turn signal or brake light. Make sure that the vehicle side and trailer side connectors are clean and free of corrosion inside and out. The main connector grounds should be attached to clean and corrosion free bare metal surfaces. The light grounds should also be attached...

  • Are Mounting Brackets Available for Optronics Mini LED Clearance Lights # MCL95AB and # MCL95RB
The Optronics Mini Rectangular LED Clearance Lights, # MCL95AB and # MCL95RB, are single stud surface mount lights, so they do not have a grommet or mounting bracket available. They were designed to mount directly to an existing bracket or to the trailer frame. The closest clearance lights that we carry to the dimensions of your current lights are the Optronics Square LED Clearance Light, # MCL36AB and # MCL36RB. These are also single stud surface mount lights, but the larger size should...

  • Tracking Down Possible Trailer Ground Problem to Repair Running Lights
As a first step, you will want to determine if the wiring problem is on the tow vehicle or the trailer. You can begin by using a circuit tester like part # PTW2993 to test the trailer connector on the tow vehicle while a helper activates each function. If you get no signal on the pin that feeds the running lamp circuit, you know the problem lies with the tow vehicle. If this is the case, you will need to check fuses or the wiring connections of the trailer connector. Also, check the connector...

  • Replacement Trailer Taillights and Wiring for Trailer that Doesn't Need License Plate Light
Since you don't want a license plate light or bracket what you'd want is two of the part # STL38RB for both sides of your trailer. For a couple amber LED clearance lights you could then use the part # MCL36AB and for a wiring harness part # A20WB.

  • Can I Ground Trailer Lights To Trailer's Main Ground
You can ground all of the trailer lights like part # MCL36AB to the main ground on the trailer. We normally recommend to attach the grounds to a clean bare metal surface of the trailer frame for a better connection. If you have ground issues after connecting the grounds to the main ground, I recommend to ground to the frame.
