This Comfort Ride suspension upgrade system greatly improves your towing experience. It serves as an add-on for your leaf spring suspension, and it provides a notably smoother ride, reducing chucking, axle roll-up, and suspension rebound. This means that you'll experience improved handling, even over potholes and uneven pavement. And the contents of your trailer will stay in place during travel.

Gas Shocks Absorb Road Vibration

While traditional leaf springs support your trailer to prevent bottoming out, they don't necessarily provide a comfortable ride. Due to the rigidity of the steel construction, leaf springs do a poor job of absorbing shock and bounce and limiting sway.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride shocks

Adding these shocks to your existing leaf spring suspension offers a better solution. Gas-powered springs inside of the sealed cylinders compress and extend as you drive. The compression and extension of the springs creates enough force to offset the amount of incoming force or vibration that occurs when you tow over rough or uneven terrain. The result is a more comfortable towing experience.

Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers installed

Typically, when shocks are installed on a trailer, they're positioned at a more horizontal angle. But this positioning doesn't compensate very well for the up-and-down movement of the trailer's suspension. However, Roadmaster's patented adjustable frame brackets are specifically designed to allow these shocks to be mounted at a nearly vertical angle. As a result, these shocks will have the leverage necessary to limit up-and-down motion during both compression and rebound.

Rigorous Testing Standards

The Comfort Ride shock absorber system has endured rigorous testing to ensure its durability and longevity. This testing includes computerized Finite Element Analysis, which establishes guidelines to ensure superior product quality and safety. Roadmaster also tested these shock absorbers at the Navistar Proving Grounds, a private test facility that provides real-world handling and safety testing. The result is a safe, long-lasting product that you can trust.

Installation

Installation of the Comfort Ride system is fairly straightforward.

The included tie plates replace your existing U-bolt tie plates. You will need to retain your existing U-bolts and nuts for installation. Once the tie plates are installed, bolt the upper mounting brackets to your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Some drilling is required when mounting the brackets to the frame. Finally, attach the shocks between the tie plates and the frame brackets.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers Review

Hi there, towing enthusiasts. Today we're going to be taking a look at Roadmaster's Comfort Ride Shock Absorber System. They're available for either tandem axles and triple axles and they have three different sizes. For your 2 3/8-inch axles, it will support up to 3,500 pounds. For your 3-inch axles, you'll have a 5,200 to 7,000 pound kit. And for your 3 1/2-inch axles, we have a 8,000 pound kit. In addition to those, there's also an add-on kit, so if you decide to take the tandem axle kit that you have on your trailer and you upgrade to a triple axle trailer, you can take those, get the add-on kit for your additional axle, and then transfer those right on over. And this is what our shock absorbers are going to look like when they're installed.

Typically trailers don't have any shock absorbers, just leaf springs. Leaf springs don't really offer a whole lot as far as dampening. So a lot of that road shock is going to transfer from the road through your leaf springs up into your trailer. The shock absorbers will absorb a lot of road vibrations and any sudden impact she might have from pot holes, minimizing the transfer of that energy up through the trailer inside. So this way things that are inside won't feel that jarring motion nearly as much as they did when they didn't have any shocks at all. Many of our customers have reported in that they had damaged cabinet doors from slamming open and closed as well as broken dishes.

By adding shocks to the system, it greatly minimizes the amount of vibration, oscillations that you get in the back, so this will no longer happen. You'll also have a lot of expensive electronics and appliances inside of your camper, and you want to keep those safe. You don't want it doing this for eight hours on your way to your next destination. So if this was your toy hauler or car hauler, all the components you have inside of your trailer will also receive all those dampening benefits. All that shock that's going to transfer from the road through your trailer would also transfer to those components, but since we're minimizing it at the source, we're not going to see it down the line. So you can protect your classic car or motorcycle just as well as your refrigerator. Now there's a good chance if you're watching this video, you just got back from a frightening road trip where you we're white knuckled, holding onto the steering wheel as your trailer was swaying and pulling you all over the road.

Well, adding these shocks is going to help minimize that sway and chucking that you get in the back, so you won't feel it inside your truck. What this means for you is you're going to get to your destination with more energy, your hands aren't going to be sore from gripping the wheel, and you're just going to feel overall safer for you and your family as you're pulling your trailer behind you.And to give you an idea of what it's like inside your trailer, we set up some cameras inside of our fifth-wheel here and then took it for a ride before and after we installed the shocks. To help minimize sway, the shocks are placed at a 15-degree angle. This will limit the lateral movement and also the front-to-back and up-and-down movement. The shocks are filled with pressurized gas, which allows them to compress and extend, which creates enough force to off-set the amount of incoming vibration that occurs when you are driving over rough or uneven terrain.Lippert also makes a shock kit for trailers. However, Lippert shocks install on the outside of the frame, so you have to have enough clearance between the inside of your tire and the outside of the frame in order for the shocks to fit.

Many trailers don't have this clearance, so Roadmaster's kit is a great option, because it installs on the inside of the frame where you typically do have more clearance.Something else I would like to recommend if you're looking to further reduce road shock and chucking are Lippert's equal flex cushioned equalizers. They are an upgrade over your factory equalizers that will help smooth out your ride. You can see we have them installed along with our comfort ride shocks. It's a universal bolt-on system, so it's going to be great for your larger trailers, such as your fifth-wheels, your toy haulers, and then your car haulers. The shock absorbers going to connect to the upper and lower brackets. Your upper brackets going to attach to the frame and our lower bracket's going to attach to the top of our axle. And that completes our look at Roadmaster's Comfort Ride Shock Absorber kit.

Just finished installing the Roadmaster shock system on my Momentum 398M tri-axle. The kit arrived well packaged and all items were included. The instructions that come with it are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. This would probably be a lot quicker install with some helping hands, but I did it by myself in about 6 hours. The hardest part of the entire setup is all of the overhead drilling, but with a little redneck ingenuity I was able to make that bearable. As far as this kit goes, the ordering process and the outstanding customer service from Angela W, etrailer.com rocks!! This could be the start of a wonderful relationship.. 630834

Still feel it is the best upgrade you can do short of going independent. Still a great product for the price.

I received my Roadmaster shock absorber kit for my 5th wheel trailer, and installed it with no problems. It is exactly what I wanted. The parts fit like a glove. 597410

I installed the RoadMaster shock system on my new 30 foot fifth wheel because the first time we took the new trailer out (before shocks), the trailer bounced so much that the bouncing broke some plates in our rear kitchen cabinets. The product was straight forward to install. The only hard part was all the drilling into the frame to mount the top brackets. Working on my back, under the trailer, and around the springs with hot metal shavings dropping on my face was not pleasant. However, the installation was fairly straight-forward and the product seems to be very sturdy. I have not taken the trailer out to test the system yet but have two trips planned near term. However, based on how well my previous 5th wheel rode with shocks installed, I fully expect this installation to be well worth the money and I believe it should solve my bouncy trailer problem. 560561

I got my parts yesterday and everything was packed properly and all there. The instruction sheet with a complete parts list along with bolts and other parts. It will be a few days before I install the kit but from the instruction sheets and the u-tube video, I think it will be a simple job to accomplish. E-trade seems to have made the kit and system for anyone with simple tools to install. Thank you for your quick shipping. 595032

I installed this shock kit along with the Roadmaster RM-2560 Slipper Spring System in our 2011 Keystone Cougar 245RKS. As the model number implies, this is a rear kitchen unit. I had over 30,000 towing miles on this trailer and the bouncing trailer caused many issues: doors opening, dishes (and other items) getting thrown around inside the cabinets, many loose fasteners, etc. I had always wanted to add shock absorbers, but this new Roadmaster kit prompted me to replace the springs as well as the shocks. Our trailer has 4500 pound axles, so I was somewhat concerned that the shock kit was designed for 5200-7000 pound axles. But the Roadmaster people assured me that the kit would work fine with the 4500 pound axles, and it does! I did a quick calculation that showed that the new springs are about 14% stiffer than the originals. The shocks easily accommodate the slightly stiffer springs. The kit was relatively easy to install, but you will need multiple jacks and floor stands. Care needs to be taken to get the mounting holes for the spring box correctly located and drilled for simple installation, and my experience went fine. The ride height was very minimally affected - the kit has multiple mounting holes that help with this. And, I was able to use the original u-bolts to mount the new springs, although the instructions implied that I might need longer bolts. We have recently returned from a 7000 mile trip and I am very pleased with the Roadmaster kit. The ride improvement was immediately noticed and things do not get bounced around nearly as much as before. The trailer is also noticeably more stable and not affected as much by wind and passing big rigs. It is really great to get rid of the equalizer link that tied the ends of the original leaf springs together in the middle and allows the trailer to have a proper independent suspension. 614184

Arrived very well boxed, nice heavy brackets, fit well with exception of trying to get angle and length both correct. But after a bit of thinking and grinding and welding every thing worked out quit well. Will find out next week how much improved it will be, as we start our annual long trip estimate about 12,000 miles this trip out. 694448

This is a great product, it smothered out my fifth wheel nearly eliminating the chucking. 666608

Highly recommend adding these on your camper. We added them to our Grand Design 2400 BH which was a night and day difference in ride quality. This eliminated a lot of the porpoising, chucking and side to side roll that you sometimes get. I was amazed how much smoother of a ride pulling the camper is now. Running these shocks now in combination with the Road Armor Equalizers. 787053

As always etrailer delivered a great product, complete and undamaged in record time. I received the Roadmaster -2460 shock kit for the suspension on my 2019 36 foot fifth wheel three days earlier than expected and completed the installation myself in approx. six hours. Anxious to take it down the road and see how much it has improved the ride in my coach. Great price, easy installation and good instructions for those mechanically inclined DIY's. 728615

Well, all the shocks are installed. Working on my back is hard, not as easy to do stuff today as it was years ago but I got I done. Sharp drill bits and using the frame mounting plates as a guide was the key. However, I had so much dirt and metal bits in my hair I had to take my dogs flee comb to my head before I could shower. Now for the next project whatever that is. I’m sure I’ll think of something. 713280

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Installation was as shown on videos Directions were clear and all parts were included and well packaged. I need to move the gray water drain line with being all plastic was not a problem. I’ve only pulled the trailer about 5 miles since the installation I believe it’s made a large difference in the ride in the tow vehicle and the sway and handling of the trailer. The only negative I found is the shock bolts bolts are metric and the assembly bolts are SAE easy to confuse a half inch self locking nut with a 12 mm. Ruined 1/2 inch nut requiring a trip to the hardware store. A good half inch drive impact wrench is a huge labor saver and putting the 32 self tapping bolts into the trailer frame. 720830

Needed a bit longer bolt than was provided on a trailer. These bolts added the extra length I needed and were a perfect fit. Didn’t have to bend them open or closed to get them through the tieplate holes. 603632

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

We bought a new Grand Design 22 foot Travel Trailer and Ford Expedition Tow Vehicle. Even after we installed a Curt Trunnion Bar Equalizer Hitch, the trailer bucking was unbearable for long trips. It was so bad we were ready to sell the whole rig. The suspension of all travel trailers is sub-standard. We bought the Roadmaster RM-2450 Shock absorber kit and installed it ourselves. It made a WORLD OF DIFFERENCE in the ride! However, the installation was not easy for a 76 year old man. Thanks to a neighbor with a flat paved driveway and an extensive tool inventory, I got it done. You need pre-planning and high jack stands. Read the instructions and view some online videos before committing. Verify that there are no gas or water pipes next to the trailer frames. Determining the location of the upper shock frame bracket is tricky. This measurement sets the angle of the shock absorber, and has to be done BEFORE you lift the trailer and remove the wheels! You have to have the trailer loaded, the wheels on the ground and the tow vehicle connected. Then install one shock absorber from the bottom up and measure where the upper bracket sets on the frame. Then you can disconnect and lift the trailer up on jack stands and drill the frame holes. I was lucky that I was close to the IDEAL 35 degree angle on my trailer. I don't know what you would do if you are outside the 25 to 40 degree allowable range. The instructions say you have to get 12" long drill bits to drill into the bottom of the frame. There's not enough clearance to insert a standard drill between the springs and frame. Pushing the drill up overhead, and having the bit tight to the springs makes it almost impossible to get the holes straight. So when you drive the self tapping bolts into the holes it is very easy to strip them. A better solution is to have a low profile angle drill. Otherwise you'll be welding the brackets or glueing bolts. We also installed heavy duty shackles, wet bolts and bronze bushings while the trailer was up on the jack stands. You have to refer to other reviews for that. The Trailer Mfg. stock components are junk. 801724

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Thank you for asking for a 1 year review as I never do them without enough test time. I have made several trips into western VA and West VA so have used the mountains and found it made a big difference in stability and bounce as advertised. No fault of the product but had I known I would have changed axles to next load level higher and kit to match. Instructions were pretty good, it does require some drilling through 3/16 steel 9/16" holes so having proper tools for job is essential. I got some trailer jack stands from [nationwide retailer] they provided safety at a reasonable cost. I highly recommend them. 783109

Review from a similar Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

OMG! After having the trailer bottom out on the stock springs while traversing a RR crossing, this system has proven to be amazing. Returning from a VA campground I crossed multiple RR crossings and traveled some rough pavement. I found I had left a bottle of shower soap on the ledge in the shower! It was still there when I set up in my yard. Not possible with the stock suspension! 777008
