This Comfort Ride suspension upgrade system greatly improves your towing experience. It serves as an add-on for your leaf spring suspension, and it provides a notably smoother ride, reducing chucking, axle roll-up, and suspension rebound. This means that you'll experience improved handling, even over potholes and uneven pavement. And the contents of your trailer will stay in place during travel.

Gas Shocks Absorb Road Vibration

While traditional leaf springs support your trailer to prevent bottoming out, they don't necessarily provide a comfortable ride. Due to the rigidity of the steel construction, leaf springs do a poor job of absorbing shock and bounce and limiting sway.

Roadmaster Comfort Ride shocks

Adding these shocks to your existing leaf spring suspension offers a better solution. Gas-powered springs inside of the sealed cylinders compress and extend as you drive. The compression and extension of the springs creates enough force to offset the amount of incoming force or vibration that occurs when you tow over rough or uneven terrain. The result is a more comfortable towing experience.

Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers installed

Typically, when shocks are installed on a trailer, they're positioned at a more horizontal angle. But this positioning doesn't compensate very well for the up-and-down movement of the trailer's suspension. However, Roadmaster's patented adjustable frame brackets are specifically designed to allow these shocks to be mounted at a nearly vertical angle. As a result, these shocks will have the leverage necessary to limit up-and-down motion during both compression and rebound.

Rigorous Testing Standards

The Comfort Ride shock absorber system has endured rigorous testing to ensure its durability and longevity. This testing includes computerized Finite Element Analysis, which establishes guidelines to ensure superior product quality and safety. Roadmaster also tested these shock absorbers at the Navistar Proving Grounds, a private test facility that provides real-world handling and safety testing. The result is a safe, long-lasting product that you can trust.

Installation

Installation of the Comfort Ride system is fairly straightforward.

The included tie plates replace your existing U-bolt tie plates. You will need to retain your existing U-bolts and nuts for installation. Once the tie plates are installed, bolt the upper mounting brackets to your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Some drilling is required when mounting the brackets to the frame. Finally, attach the shocks between the tie plates and the frame brackets.

Video Transcript for Roadmaster Trailer Suspension - Leaf Spring Suspension - RM-2460 Review

Speaker 1: Today we're going to be taking a look at the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for tandem axle trailers. This is designed to work with axles from 5200 pounds to 7000 pounds. Now, a typical problem that you'll have with your trailer is that the suspension just doesn't provide a lot of cushion, those steel leaf springs just don't have a lot of give as they're going down the road. It'll prevent you from bottoming out, but it doesn't do anything to prevent side to side movement, front to back, and that jarring porpoising feeling that you can have, especially with heavy loads in your trailer. The Comfort Ride system from Roadmaster is designed to alleviate that problem. It's going to improve your overall towing experience, as it's going to have the shock absorbers to take out all the brunt of that movement in your trailer. Now, the shock absorbers are going to be a heavy duty gas shock, and it's going to provide that more comfortable towing experience.

These are nitrogen charged, and it's just going to help eliminate the bouncing and chucking that you typically have. They are adjustable with a mounting bracket here, so it will work with underslung or over slung axles. It just depends on how you have the position on that extension bracket there. And since these are going to be designed to have more of a vertical style mounting, rather than a horizontal, it's going to limit the up and down motion of the trailer both on compression and rebound, and that also helps to improve the front to back, as well as side to side and up and down movement of the trailer. It's also going to help to control sway by limiting that lateral movement. Now, this is going to be a bolt on installation.

It does include the tie plates that are just going to sit on top of your leaf springs and replace your existing U-bolt plates, and then that's going to attach to that extension bracket there, the long piece that goes down to the bottom of our shock, and then the shock will tie into our frame bracket, which mounts up to the frame and that's going to be the solid mounting point on your trailer. So typically it's going to sit something like this on the underside of your trailer, and will provide that good shock absorption for your suspension. Now, again, this application is designed to work with tandem axle trailers with leaf spring suspension. The axle size this will work for is three inches in diameter. That's typically going to be axles that are rated for 5200 pounds up to 7000 pounds. The shock length at its most extended is going to be 17 and a half inches, at its most compressed it's going to be 11 and a half inches.

This does come with the four shocks as well as all the brackets and hardware you need to get installed, and some instructions to help with that installation. And that's going to do it for our look at the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for tandem action trailers.

Just finished installing the Roadmaster shock system on my Momentum 398M tri-axle. The kit arrived well packaged and all items were included. The instructions that come with it are pretty straight forward and easy to understand. This would probably be a lot quicker install with some helping hands, but I did it by myself in about 6 hours. The hardest part of the entire setup is all of the overhead drilling, but with a little redneck ingenuity I was able to make that bearable. As far as this kit goes, the ordering process and the outstanding customer service from Angela W, etrailer.com rocks!! This could be the start of a wonderful relationship.. 630834

I got my parts yesterday and everything was packed properly and all there. The instruction sheet with a complete parts list along with bolts and other parts. It will be a few days before I install the kit but from the instruction sheets and the u-tube video, I think it will be a simple job to accomplish. E-trade seems to have made the kit and system for anyone with simple tools to install. Thank you for your quick shipping. 595032

I installed this shock kit along with the Roadmaster RM-2560 Slipper Spring System in our 2011 Keystone Cougar 245RKS. As the model number implies, this is a rear kitchen unit. I had over 30,000 towing miles on this trailer and the bouncing trailer caused many issues: doors opening, dishes (and other items) getting thrown around inside the cabinets, many loose fasteners, etc. I had always wanted to add shock absorbers, but this new Roadmaster kit prompted me to replace the springs as well as the shocks. Our trailer has 4500 pound axles, so I was somewhat concerned that the shock kit was designed for 5200-7000 pound axles. But the Roadmaster people assured me that the kit would work fine with the 4500 pound axles, and it does! I did a quick calculation that showed that the new springs are about 14% stiffer than the originals. The shocks easily accommodate the slightly stiffer springs. The kit was relatively easy to install, but you will need multiple jacks and floor stands. Care needs to be taken to get the mounting holes for the spring box correctly located and drilled for simple installation, and my experience went fine. The ride height was very minimally affected - the kit has multiple mounting holes that help with this. And, I was able to use the original u-bolts to mount the new springs, although the instructions implied that I might need longer bolts. We have recently returned from a 7000 mile trip and I am very pleased with the Roadmaster kit. The ride improvement was immediately noticed and things do not get bounced around nearly as much as before. The trailer is also noticeably more stable and not affected as much by wind and passing big rigs. It is really great to get rid of the equalizer link that tied the ends of the original leaf springs together in the middle and allows the trailer to have a proper independent suspension. 614184

I installed the RoadMaster shock system on my new 30 foot fifth wheel because the first time we took the new trailer out (before shocks), the trailer bounced so much that the bouncing broke some plates in our rear kitchen cabinets. The product was straight forward to install. The only hard part was all the drilling into the frame to mount the top brackets. Working on my back, under the trailer, and around the springs with hot metal shavings dropping on my face was not pleasant. However, the installation was fairly straight-forward and the product seems to be very sturdy. I have not taken the trailer out to test the system yet but have two trips planned near term. However, based on how well my previous 5th wheel rode with shocks installed, I fully expect this installation to be well worth the money and I believe it should solve my bouncy trailer problem. 560561

Review from a similar Roadmaster Comfort Ride in Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension

Needed a bit longer bolt than was provided on a trailer. These bolts added the extra length I needed and were a perfect fit. Didn’t have to bend them open or closed to get them through the tieplate holes. 603632

Do you have a question about this Trailer Leaf Spring Suspension?

  • Will the Bolt-On Shock Kits for Trailers Work With Underslung Axles
  • I do have an option for you but the Lippert Components Bolt-On Shock Kit like part # LC281281 is designed for use on overslung axles (leaf springs over axle) only. Therefore, it should not be used with the underslung (leaf springs under axle) axles that you have. The reason for this is that the shock absorbers would not be long enough and there could be interference with the axle tube. Instead, I recommend using the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers part...

The better option for your suspension enhancement is to add shocks to your axles instead of using a cushioned equalizer. • The Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers - 3,500-lb Axle # RM-2450 is an excellent system for minimizing road shock. The 3,500 lb axles are much more common on trailers than the larger 3 inch axles, so the kit pricing from the manufacturer simply follows supply and demand. The Roadmaster Comfort Ride # RM-2460 for the 3 inch axles is an equally good product, there is just not the same demand right at this time so the cost reflects that. You can always check...

  • What Causes a Trailer to Bounce Up and Down
  • The leaf springs on your trailer could be too far worn which is making the ride bouncy because they have lost their rigidity or it could just be how the weight inside of the trailer is positioned. If you are having any clearance issues with your fenders or the trailer is leaning to one side more so than the other then this would point to signs of worn out leaf springs. Aside from these instances it is rather difficult to diagnose a worn out leaf spring if there are no other visual cues...
