Do I Need to Get the Roadmaster Comfort Ride System with Shocks and Springs

Question:

I meet a guy that installed just shocks on his Montana 5th wheel, and loves them. So I started looking into them. I found Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers for Tandem Axle Trailers - 5,200-lb to 7,000-lb Axle RM-2460 should work for my Keystone 290RLS with 6,000lb 3inch axles. I am mainly wanting to smooth out the ride in my truck chucking, and porpoising I dont have a problem with side to side movement. So wanting to see what the added benefit of spending an extra $1100 and get the slipper springs also. Roadmaster Comfort Ride Leaf Spring Suspension Kit w/ Shock Absorbers - Tandem 6K Trailer Axles Part Number: RM49NQ I called Roadmaster and the lady said the only added benefit with the slipper springs would be side to side movement. I am just wanting to justify the added cost and if it is worth it. Also I look at my U-Bolts and I currently have an extra 3/4inch of threads showing, so I dont think I need a new kit for that. Plus my 5th wheel is maybe a year old now so probably not worn out. Thanks for your time Tim

Hey Tim, so for you I would recommend just the shock kit part # RM-2460 for your Keystone 290RLS with 6k axles. This will address and fix the issues you described with the chucking and porpoising. You also would have enough U-bolt thread to not need to worry about getting longer ones as well. Have you done any other suspension modifications to the camper at all?

No. There has nothing been changed from the OEM suspension. Only thing I have done was added Timbrens to my Ram 2500. (which I did notice a difference)

The comfort ride shock system really helped with how the trailer pulled, tracked. It also helped how the tires were wearing by taking a lot of the wheel bounce from rough roads etc. My only other suggestion is after installing consider having a weld done to insure the brackets don’t get loose. I pull a 38 ft Cedar Creek/ 3500 Ram truck. I don’t regret installing the shock system a bit
