How Should The Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shocks Mount The The Trailer Frame

Updated 09/30/2024 | Published 09/26/2024

Question:

Good Morning, when Shane fit this initial shock to the hardware, to the frame, he left the cord/tie on the shock and marked the frame for holes. Once he got the plate holes drilled in the frame, he installed the bolts/plate.........this is the part that I am confused about.......he cut the cord/tie on the shock to EXTEND the shock to the bolt, again, on initial placement of the bracket, the cord was on the shock when the bracket was located. So, that had to mean that the bracket couldnt be in the initial location if the shock extended to be put on the bolt. Which way do I do it? Thanks and hope my gibberish makes some sense. Hi Ray,

The Comfort Ride Shocks # RM-2460 just need to sit within a 20 to 40 degree angle, with 30 degrees being the most preferred. Having installed this system myself numerous times I can say Shane was probably just guessing the placement when holding it up to talk about how to install the shock and then behind the scenes figured out how it needed to sit to achieve the required angle. When I did this install I brought in my angle finder and used to it get within the range needed. I've attached my video for this kit below so you can see another perspective and I feel like my video has a bit better lighting so you can really see what I'm doing.

Hey Kevin, thanks and will look at your video....please forgive because I was not trying to be critical of his video. Ps......have you installed the Sumo Springs (the ones that sit "on top" of the springs? Can you compare the ride difference between shocks and the Sumo Springs? My original thought is shocks, but springs look pretty good also. Thanks for your reply. Ray

@RayP I didn't think you were being too critical and to be honest these questions can actually be really helpful for everyone to get a better understanding of how a particular part works or installs. If we aren't making it easy enough to do at home then we're missing the mark with our videos in my opinion. There's definitely times that we've done something and then decided we didn't like how it looked or found a better way to do it and sometimes that footage doesn't always make the final edit so comments or questions about it can help us form a new perspective and shoot our videos in a better way going forward. I have also installed SumoSprings (jounce spring) and have some on my truck as well. If you were going with the full Roadmaster Comfort Ride system, which includes the slipper spring box and shocks, then I'd say you're better off but for just the shocks you'd likely make a larger impact with just some jounce springs. The shocks will dampen road shock and help slow down the compression of your suspension but aren't as strong as a jounce spring sitting between the spring stack and frame. They're also incredibly easy to install so you'd spend quite a bit less time getting them on versus the Comfort Ride. To choose the correct SumoSpring jounce spring kit for your trailer you'll need to know the axle capacity and whether or not your leaf springs sit above (overslung) or below the axle (underslung): Overslung: 3k to 5k # TSS-107-40 5k to 8k # SS26MV Underslung: 3k to 5k # TSS-106-40 5k to 8k # SS33HR
