Can Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers Be Added Without Leaf Spring Suspension Kit

Updated 03/24/2026 | Published 03/21/2026

Question:

Can I use this shock upgrade without installing the complete Roadmaster slipper spring kit? In other words, I can add these shocks to any spring setup?

Hey Adam, welcome back! Yes, the Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers can be installed without the leaf spring kit. Is this still for your 2013 CrossRoads Elevation TF-3612 with tandem 7k axles? Assuming it is, the # RM-2460 is the kit you need for your toy hauler.

Actually we traded in on a 2026 XLR Nitro 41g14. 8K Triple axle. I had installed the Roadmaster setup on the Elevation.

@AdamB wow that looks super nice! The # RM-2470-3 is the right kit for that setup.

@RobinH I was also looking at a Gen-Y Hitch Shock Absorbing 5th Wheel to Gooseneck Pin Box for my Rhino box. According to the sizing chart I am going to fall between two sizes of hitch. My dry weight is 15550# and max weight around 22000. Calculating the pin weights I'm at 3410# to 4620#. Which model would I need?

@Adam Gen-Y actually updated how they rate these and how to decide so that makes this pretty easy. If your GVWR is 16,365 lbs or higher (yours is) then you need the 6.5k TW model which is the # GY45GR.

I installed just the shock kit on a grand design 27BN last year. They helped with the chucking and the overall ride of the trailer and truck. We pull with a 04 Silverado 2500 gas 6.0 truck, we averaged 9 miles per gallon from Jacksonville Florida to Maine last year.

I tho about adding the slipper springs as well but figured I would try just the shocks first. The shocks made such a great change in the ride that I decided I do need the springs right now. Maybe at a later date if something happens to my factory springs. I really don’t understand why manufacturers stopped adding shocks to the RV’s especially heavier 5th wheels. Btw, you might need to purchase longer ubolts. I did.

Hello Adam The comfort ride shocked absorber system. I put on my 2019 Cedar Creek. It’s a 38 foot fifth wheel greatly improved tracking behind the vehicle. It also helped Tire wear more evenly. The shock absorber system I believe was well worth the expense and time I would suggest after install have some welds put on the upper brackets to the frame rather than just the self tapping bolts alone.
