Replacement Equalizer and Shock Kit for a 5th Wheel Trailer

Updated 02/20/2026 | Published 02/18/2026

Question:

Hello there, I have a 2024 Cougar Sport 2400RE. I want to change out the Equalizer. The only 2 that look compatible are the Dexter EZ-Flex which is the same dimension as the equalizer I have now. Or the Lippert Equaflex which is approx a 1/4inch shorter from side bolt to side bolt, and 1/2inch taller from the hanger bolt to side bolt. Ive heard mostly good about each one. I have heard the EZ-Flex might be a little stiffer on lighter trailers like mine. Where the Equaflex should bolt up Just wondering how much it will affect the suspension geometry. I have read it has a little bit of a softer ride. I have read a ton of opinions just want to get yours since Ill be purchasing from Etrailer. Eventually Im going to add the Roadcomfort shock setup when I can afford it. Thanks

Hey Jim, welcome back! There's not much difference performance wise between the Lippert Road Armor and one of the Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizers like item # K71-655-00, item # K71-654-00, and item # K71-652-00. Above all you want to make sure your replacement equalizer matches your current ones dimensions as closely as possible. This ensures your suspension geometry doesn't change or your ride height.

The Lippert Road Armor and Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizers both use rubber inserts to dampen road shock and absorb vibrations. So they'll each do a great job managing bouncing and chucking. The main difference is going to be the cost increase of the Road Amor.

Doing some rough math here it looks like the Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizer Kit item # K71-654-00 is going to be the closest size to your current equalizer. It measures 5-5/8" tall and replaces equalizers 5-1/4"–6-1/4" Long.

Please note that when you replace your equalizers you'll also need to get new suspension bolts. The bolts are only designed to be torqued down upon initial install. You'll want to pick a kit with the closest size to your current shackle straps.

The MORryde Suspension Upgrade Kit for Tandem Axle Trailers item # MR46ZR is for 2-1/4" shackles or item # MR76ZR is for 3-1/8" shackles. These kits come with the bronze bushings, wet bolts and shackle straps.

The Roadmaster Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers item # RM-2460 you mentioned, are going to be a solid addition to your suspension when you're ready to pull the trigger. These are great for softening up bumpy roads and you'll never have to worry about things shuffling around inside your trailer or cabinet doors coming open.

What kind of roads do you typically travel that has you wanting to add shocks?

Thanks for the quick response Jerred, I was leaning toward the EZ-Flex. I like that the diminsions are almost exact as my equalizer and you can order it with a bolt kit. I installed a Moryde Bolt kit on my boat trailer a couple years ago. As far as the Comfort Ride I probably can get away without it but we are going to take a cross country trip in the fall and I thought that the more the trailer is stable the better. And..well..I like a project. Thanks for the insight

@JimC You're welcome! Glad we are on the same page. I think the Dexter E-Z Flex Equalizer Kit item # K71-654-00 is indeed going to be the best overall replacement option while saving you some money. The item # K71-652-00 is the one that includes the suspension bolt kit. The Comfort Ride Shock Absorbers item # RM-2460 are definitely going to make the longer hauls more comfortable and stable.

@JimC I’m not qualified to discuss the fit. I’m running these on an Oliver legacyII with h 5,000 lbs axles and Alcan springs weighting about 6,100 lbs wet. I’ve traveled about 5,000 miles. I’m satisfied with this set up
