How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I purchased the Trailer Jack (1500 Lb) as a replacement for the one on my 2005 boat trailer (800 Lb). I just finished a simulated extension to make sure of the length. ALL went well and I am glad the conversation with salesperson was done. He knew the products. I like my new Jack. Will install when cooler, 89 Deg now. Semper Fi

by:

Good tongue jack for the money but nothing is built with the good old USA pride and quality that it used to be. etrailer team was spot on. Ordering was easy and got my order out right away.

by:

One year in and it still works great. No rust so far.

by:

Quick delivery and knowledgeable employ ees.

by:

First of all, despite the typical delays we're all experiencing these days the people at Etrailer sent updates. Communication is a good thing! I installed the jack on my Shorelander trailer and had to drill out the holes for the lock pin to accomodate the larger diameter pin as I had to use the factory mount on the trailer. Other than that, it mounted nicely and sure makes it easy to move the boat around. Well built jack, no more creaking and flexing!

by:

This trailer jack is amazing. The turn handle mechanism works so well, very smooth. We really like the ability to turn it sideways so it stores horizontally when in transit. The wheel turns very easily, making positioning painless. We both love that it was made in the USA. Ordering was easy, and shipping was lightning fast. Will be back if we need any more accessories for our trailer.

by:

Amazing quality, easy to install (20 minutes), works like a charm. This will outlast the trailer!
Installation videos were helpful
Thanks!

by:

Not much to say: they had it, they shipped it, I got it, I installed it.
The folks at etrailer are my “go-to” guys (& gals) for almost everything retailer!
Great service!

by:

Great service and kept me up to date on the status of my owder

by:

The packaging of this product was in a heavy-duty cardboard which held up well. The appearance and heft of this jack was much better than the Chinese built version I bought a year ago. Immediately after installing this and putting the weight on the jack the boat glided easily on the new, larger wheel. Can't wait to take the boat/trailer out of the garage and enjoy the ease of movement from this new wheeled jack.

by:

Very happy with quality of the product. Would highly recommend this product. Made better than the original that came on my trailer
. Made in USA

by:

Always a great experience buying products from etrailer. The jack was purchased to replace the existing Jack which prematurely broke. The gears stripped out not allowing me to raise or lower the trailer. This new Jack is definitely better quality and the 8 inch wheel gives me better handling in the dirt. Thanks for shipping so fast!

by:

Great, easy to install just might be improved a touch with the top bracket hole being a slot versus just a hole so there would be a bit more room to make a tight fit on some odd sized rails (like my vintage camper). BUT easy to install and works great!

by:

Replacement for older tongue jack. Has greater weight capacity, should improve stability on the loaded trailer. Easy to install, all components were included.

by:

This swivel jack works great. Plenty strong and smooth cranking motion while raising the trailer tongue. Love it.

by:

Easy to install. Higher weight rating than the OEM

by:

This Trailer Jack is a solid USA made jack. It is heavy duty and I especially appreciate the large wheel. Paul B. was most helpful with the information I needed and he certainly got the delivery on the move...got it in two days.

by:

Exact replacement for the original which was damaged.

Works well

by:

Great service. Great jack, the 8'' wheel rolls very well on hard ground.

by:

I received the order the next day and was surprised the item #dl22800 was made in the usa , ( real good ). it looks well built with thick metal and nice coating to prevent rust and it jacks up and down flawlessly. I don't know if the wheel is solid or not but it looks like it should last as long as the jack itself.

by:

Installs easily, folds up easily and quickly. Wheel rolls freely. I have not towed the trailer since installation to see how well it travels yet.

by:

Heavy duty and the large wheel makes it easy to roll. Used on an 18' Lund Alaskan install was easy. Glad I spent a little extra and went first class. Made in USA, too.

by:

Replaced original on 16 ft aluminum trailer. Easily mounted and works great.

by:

Great Product! Quick delivery! Easy Installation! MADE IN AMERICA!!

by:

EZ install and works great with 8" wheel

I can certainly provide those measurements for you! I spoke with my contact at Dutton-Lainson about the Pull Pin, Easy Swivel Trailer Jack # DL22800 and Replacement Wheel # DL22410. Based on the picture you submitted the matching trailer jack we have to what you have is the Dutton Lainson part # DL22800. I attached an install video for you to check out as well. Yes, you are correct. As long as your trailer frame is 3 inches wide across that top and 5 inches tall the Easy Swivel Trailer Jack, # DL22800, will fit on your trailer without drilling.
