Easy Hookup with Long, Self-Aligning Arms

Blue Ox Avail Self-Aligning Arms

The Avail's convenient, self-centering arms help to make hookup a snap. Older and more economical tow bars have rigid arms that are essentially locked in place so you have to drive your towed vehicle into the exact position necessary for hookup. But with the Avail, you can connect from the approximate towing position quickly and easily. Once you have connected the tow bar to your vehicle's base plates, simply drive your RV forward until the tow bar arms fully extend and lock in place. Before hitting the road, be sure to check that the arms are properly latched to avoid damage to your towing setup.

The Avail's arms are also longer than the arms on the average tow bar. As a result, they provide an improved turning radius, making it easy to maneuver around obstacles and execute sharp turns.

Non-Binding for Simple Disconnect

Blue Ox Avail Non-Binding Tow Arms

Being unable to unhook your car because of a bind in the tow bar is really frustrating. And the tight spots and uneven terrain at some campsites can put your tow bar into a bind, even if you're careful.

Fortunately, Blue Ox has defeated the age-old problem of binding by creating a tow bar that is just as easy to release as it is to hook up. Simply press down the handles on the tow bar arms until the internal latch disengages. By releasing some of the static pressure from the tow bar, you can move the arms just enough to make disconnecting your car a snap, even if it's not perfectly lined up with your RV.

Sturdy, Dependable Triple-Lug Connection

Blue Ox Avail Triple-Lug Connection

The Blue Ox base plates on your vehicle are equipped with two tabs each that connect to the brackets on the ends of these tow bar arms. The triple-lug design of the Avail tow bar creates a tight, stable connection by surrounding both base plate lugs. The result is a sturdy, reinforced connection that is strong and rigid for a safe, dependable towing experience.

Hooking up the Avail to your base plates is as simple as it is secure. Just line up the triple-lug end of the tow bar arm with the base plate so that the center lug is positioned between the two tabs of the base plate. Then insert the 1/2" keeper pin through all of the lugs and secure it with the included quick pin.

Heavy-Duty, Vinyl-Coated Safety Cables Included

Blue Ox Avail Safety Cables

The vinyl-coated safety cables, which have a 10,000-lb weight rating, provide added protection should the tow bar ever disconnect during towing. Steel hooks with spring-loaded latches connect each cable to your towed vehicle's base plates and to your motorhome's trailer hitch.

Simple Storage

Blue Ox Avail Easy Storage

The Avail can be easily stored on your RV when it's not in use. Once the arms are disconnected from the base plate, just fold them together so they are side by side. Then swing the arms toward your RV, sliding the integrated pin into the bracket located on the shank of the tow bar to secure it in place. Finally, push the arms down so they are parallel with your RV's bumper.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

I’ve towed a Jeep jl 4 door lifted with 37 inch tires from Ga to western states twice with the hitch and to the beach once. I have zero complaints. It’s a great hitch. I would highly recommend it. I would choose it over the one built out aluminum.

Replaced an older Blue Ox with this one. This one is a big improvement and it never gets gets jammed up such that the hitch pin is difficult to remove. Highly recommended! One note: you may need to use a drop hitch receiver to get the tow bar arms as close to parallel to the ground as they are supposed to be. Read the instructions and do some measuring to stay safe!

Went well except for instructions installing baseplate for my 2017 Silverado. After grille removal was not close to the instructions. I [looked for installation videos for] 2018 model and instructions for grill and bumper removal was right. Nice project and saved a lot on install. etrailer is great at putting together the equipment you need. Love website to research products. Have not pulled truck any where yet. [(Covid)]

I am new to the world of towing a vehicle behind an RV and found a lot of articles/videos on the interweb, not having a clue what to expect except what I've read and watched on the web I reached out to etrailer.com and Courtney B answered all my questions, removed all my doubts of what i was doing and provided everything we needed in the timeframe we needed it at a reasonable price! I can't thank her or etrailer enough!!! I will buy here again and trust in they're how to videos without question. Thank you

Everything arrived just fine. The box was partially opened from mishandling, but the bar and contents stayed in the box. The bar is built like a Tank Or a battle ship and must weigh close to 100 lbs. I had a devil of a time wrestling it into the garage and wouldn’t you know it, the UPS guy brought it up the stairs rather then leaving it by the garage or foot of the stairs. The offset triple lugs don’t fit. I’ll have to order the bumper adapter kit. I don’t think it will be a problem just have to figure which adapters to get since Blue Ox does not list my Teraflex off-road bumper in the adapter list. All this is probably my fault for not doing my due diligence at the start. In my defense, I mistakenly thought everything was just standard fit. Obviously I am in err with that line of thought. Next time, measure twice and order once! Now I have to back track and order three additional things to make this whole thing work. Dang! Also for this money they should throw in the 3-lock set instead of these flimsy pins. I’m happy with the construction and the beefiness if this thing. I’m not kidding you this baby could take a direct nuclear hit and it would still be attached to the bumper of my Jeep — which could not take the same nuclear hit. I’ll follow up with everyone after I figure out the rest of the install.

I was about to rebuild my old Blue Ox Aventa tow bar when I saw a review of the Avail tow bar in Motorhome magazine. As advertised, the release handles work no matter whether you were traveling in a straight line (required for my old tow bar) or are partway through a turn. Still no help when the car is facing uphill - it is impossible to pull the pins attaching the arms to the car - fixing that would be quite an accomplishment! For now, I will continue to avoid the situation or have my wife pull the car forward while I hold the release handles down.

Comments
It is still the best tow bar I have ever used. Just yesterday I was unhooking my Honda CRV that was still in the middle of a turn. The release required a little effort and when it released the car jumped about an inch showing the tremendous load on the bar and latch. My old Aventa would have required several blows from a heavy object to get it to release.

After 12 years of Trouble free use it was time to replace our Blue Ox Aventa II tow bar. The new Avail tow bar has the necessary 10,000 lb capacity we need to tow a Ram 2500 crew cab full size truck. It has the added benefit of longer reach so there is less possibility of contact in tight turns. I have had no troubles with Blue Ox ever and etrailer is outstanding to deal with. If you have the need for a heavy tow bar this is the one to get.

- BX7420
by:

Had a problem with an arm not locking after about 3 months. Blue Ox did send a replacement part but told me I had to install it myself instead of going to a service center. Not too happy about that seeing as what the consequences might have been if I installed it wrong.

Just completed installation of Patriot Brake and Blue Ox tow bar to 2017 Chevrolet Traverse. All works like advertised. Patriot Brake setup is easy with remote. Found I had to change force from default of 6 to max of 9 to feel adequate braking from Patriot on Chevrolet Traverse.

Very happy with etrailer for the purchase of a Blue Ox tow bar with needed hook ups for lights, etc and an Air Force One Brake system for my 2018 F150. Crystal did a great job of comparing options and matching pricing from across the web. She offered free installation. The Installer, Shane was awesome, I wanted all hookups hidden by the front plate on the F150 when not towing, Shane came through and then some. Finally, the manager Robert was excellent on follow-up as we had some air leak once we got home. etrailer stood behind everything and follow was exceptional. Very pleased!

The Avail replaces our Blue Ox Aventa towbar. The Avail is much more robust and does not have the “ball” hinge that wore quickly in the Aventa which only lasted 60k miles despite being rebuilt at 30k miles.

- BX7420

Blue ox I feel is not as easy to use than the Roadmaster is. It is very heavy duty and requires a lot of strength to install the cross-over strings. The blue ox hitch you have to wrestle it into position to hook up the car to it. The effort is substancial. If I had to do it over again, would have done more reach befor making my choice.

I would highly recommend going that route. For a base plate kit you will need the part # BX1134 which is a custom fit for your 2017 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited HardRock Rubicon edition. For the 2005 Honda CR-V with Blue Ox base plates, the most popular tow bar is the Blue Ox Alpha, # BX7380. This tow bar also comes with safety cables so you will not have to get those separately. • Difference Between the Blue Ox Alpha and Avail Tow Bars
Both tow bars you referenced will work with the Blue Ox base plate kit part # BX1721 that you just bought. The biggest difference will be that the Avail part # BX7420 is designed to allow for better maneuverability in tight turns. This is accomplished by having longer arms than the Alpha # BX7380. The Avail also has a 10k capacity whereas the Alpha only has a 6,500 lb capacity. If you think you will need to make some tighter turns I would highly recommend the Avail.

For your 2016 GMC Canyon 4x4 (and 4x2 models) the Blue Ox base plate kit part # BX1721 is a confirmed fit and will work well with the Blue Ox Avail tow bar part # BX7420 that you mentioned. This would be a great flat towing setup that would work well and be very easy to use. For lighting you can use the diode kit, # RM-15267, and not have to worry about cutting into the taillight housing. This will splice into your taillight wiring to allow your tow vehicle to control the taillight assemblies...
