Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

FlatTowing Components

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

The blue ox towing bar was perfect,it was shipped to us with in a week and my husband said it was the one that was needed for our motorhome. Thank you for being so fast on your service.

Our blue ox tow bar is working great,it was easy to install and works fantastically

Nice heavy duty tow bar. Installs easily. No wonder Blue Ox is the number one recommended tow bar.

6000 miles and still working great

- BX7420

Replaced an older Blue Ox with this one. This one is a big improvement and it never gets gets jammed up such that the hitch pin is difficult to remove. Highly recommended! One note: you may need to use a drop hitch receiver to get the tow bar arms as close to parallel to the ground as they are supposed to be. Read the instructions and do some measuring to stay safe!

- BX7420

Went well except for instructions installing baseplate for my 2017 Silverado. After grille removal was not close to the instructions. I [looked for installation videos for] 2018 model and instructions for grill and bumper removal was right. Nice project and saved a lot on install. etrailer is great at putting together the equipment you need. Love website to research products. Have not pulled truck any where yet. [(Covid)]

I am new to the world of towing a vehicle behind an RV and found a lot of articles/videos on the interweb, not having a clue what to expect except what I've read and watched on the web I reached out to etrailer.com and Courtney B answered all my questions, removed all my doubts of what i was doing and provided everything we needed in the timeframe we needed it at a reasonable price! I can't thank her or etrailer enough!!! I will buy here again and trust in they're how to videos without question. Thank you

- BX7420

Everything arrived just fine. The box was partially opened from mishandling, but the bar and contents stayed in the box. The bar is built like a Tank Or a battle ship and must weigh close to 100 lbs. I had a devil of a time wrestling it into the garage and wouldn’t you know it, the UPS guy brought it up the stairs rather then leaving it by the garage or foot of the stairs. The offset triple lugs don’t fit. I’ll have to order the bumper adapter kit. I don’t think it will be a problem just have to figure which adapters to get since Blue Ox does not list my Teraflex off-road bumper in the adapter list. All this is probably my fault for not doing my due diligence at the start. In my defense, I mistakenly thought everything was just standard fit. Obviously I am in err with that line of thought. Next time, measure twice and order once! Now I have to back track and order three additional things to make this whole thing work. Dang! Also for this money they should throw in the 3-lock set instead of these flimsy pins. I’m happy with the construction and the beefiness if this thing. I’m not kidding you this baby could take a direct nuclear hit and it would still be attached to the bumper of my Jeep — which could not take the same nuclear hit. I’ll follow up with everyone after I figure out the rest of the install.

etrailer has always come through in a timely fashion

- BX7420

After 12 years of Trouble free use it was time to replace our Blue Ox Aventa II tow bar. The new Avail tow bar has the necessary 10,000 lb capacity we need to tow a Ram 2500 crew cab full size truck. It has the added benefit of longer reach so there is less possibility of contact in tight turns. I have had no troubles with Blue Ox ever and etrailer is outstanding to deal with. If you have the need for a heavy tow bar this is the one to get.

- BX7420

This is a heavy duty tow bar that gives me a lot of confidence when towing. The release mechanism works far better than previous models which makes disconnecting a lot easier.

- BX7420

I was about to rebuild my old Blue Ox Aventa tow bar when I saw a review of the Avail tow bar in Motorhome magazine. As advertised, the release handles work no matter whether you were traveling in a straight line (required for my old tow bar) or are partway through a turn. Still no help when the car is facing uphill - it is impossible to pull the pins attaching the arms to the car - fixing that would be quite an accomplishment! For now, I will continue to avoid the situation or have my wife pull the car forward while I hold the release handles down.

It is still the best tow bar I have ever used. Just yesterday I was unhooking my Honda CRV that was still in the middle of a turn. The release required a little effort and when it released the car jumped about an inch showing the tremendous load on the bar and latch. My old Aventa would have required several blows from a heavy object to get it to release.

Exactly what I ordered, arrive in perfect condition

- BX7420

The service was fantastic. They have gone the extra mile to make sure that the customer is satisfied. All shipments have arrived in a couple of days.

- BX7420

Just completed installation of Patriot Brake and Blue Ox tow bar to 2017 Chevrolet Traverse. All works like advertised. Patriot Brake setup is easy with remote. Found I had to change force from default of 6 to max of 9 to feel adequate braking from Patriot on Chevrolet Traverse.

- BX7420

We only use Blue Ox tow products at our business. We sell the Patriot braking system to all new flat-tow customers. They are easy to set up and they work great.

- BX7420

The Avail replaces our Blue Ox Aventa towbar. The Avail is much more robust and does not have the “ball” hinge that wore quickly in the Aventa which only lasted 60k miles despite being rebuilt at 30k miles.

- BX7420

Have not had any problems with this device , I done research prior to buying it .

- BX7420

I connect a small class A to a Honda CRV. The only problem the wire harness came loose and was eaten up by dragging on the road. I should have wrapped the wire harness around the tow bar so if it came loose it wouldn' t drag on the street

- BX7420

this purchase was made to replace a BX7420 which got a bend arm while holding on to the tow car when the pin on the other side came out. no damage was done to the tow car or the motor home. needless to say we are happy with Blue Ox towbars

- BX7420

Easy install and it is hook up and unho ok.

- BX7420

Very helpful staff. Ships fast!

Very good quality and very happy with it. However, when installing it, it was a little hard to get the holes for pin to line up in the receiver, but a large pipe wrench to twist the hitch part of the tow bar to help align the holes and a hammer to get the pin in worked good. I have used it to tow our Jeep over 4K miles and have had zero issues.
Jamie - 03/07/2021

- BX7420

So easy to hookup, well made products

- BX7420

Quick Free Shipping was great! Have not installed the product yet.

- BX7420

Very happy with etrailer for the purchase of a Blue Ox tow bar with needed hook ups for lights, etc and an Air Force One Brake system for my 2018 F150. Crystal did a great job of comparing options and matching pricing from across the web. She offered free installation. The Installer, Shane was awesome, I wanted all hookups hidden by the front plate on the F150 when not towing, Shane came through and then some. Finally, the manager Robert was excellent on follow-up as we had some air leak once we got home. etrailer stood behind everything and follow was exceptional. Very pleased!

- BX7420

Blue ox I feel is not as easy to use than the Roadmaster is. It is very heavy duty and requires a lot of strength to install the cross-over strings. The blue ox hitch you have to wrestle it into position to hook up the car to it. The effort is substancial. If I had to do it over again, would have done more reach befor making my choice.

- BX7420

The tow bar came in two days! Wow, great service. Wil was just great to deal with. eTrailer is highly recommended.
