Easy Hookup with Long, Self-Aligning Arms

Blue Ox Apollo Self-Aligning Arms

The Apollo's convenient, self-centering arms help to make hookup a snap. Older and more economical tow bars have rigid arms that are essentially locked in place so you have to drive your towed vehicle into the exact position necessary for hookup. But with the Apollo, you can connect from the approximate towing position quickly and easily. Once you have connected the tow bar to your vehicle's base plates, simply drive your RV forward until the tow bar arms fully extend and lock in place. Before hitting the road, be sure to check that the arms are properly latched to avoid damage to your towing setup.

The Apollo's arms are also longer than the arms on the average tow bar. As a result, they provide an improved turning radius, making it easy to maneuver around obstacles and execute sharp turns.

Non-Binding for Simple Disconnect

Blue Ox Apollo Non-Binding Tow Arms

Being unable to unhook your car because of a bind in the tow bar is really frustrating. And the tight spots and uneven terrain at some campsites can put your tow bar into a bind, even if you're careful.

Fortunately, Blue Ox has defeated the age-old problem of binding by creating a tow bar that is just as easy to release as it is to hook up. Simply press down the handles on the tow bar arms until the internal latch disengages. By releasing some of the static pressure from the tow bar, you can move the arms just enough to make disconnecting your car a snap, even if it's not perfectly lined up with your RV.

Sturdy, Dependable Triple-Lug Connection

Blue Ox Apollo Triple-Lug Connection

The Blue Ox base plates on your vehicle are equipped with two tabs each that connect to the brackets on the ends of these tow bar arms. The triple-lug design of the Apollo tow bar creates a tight, stable connection by surrounding both base plate lugs. The result is a sturdy, reinforced connection that is strong and rigid for a safe, dependable towing experience.

Hooking up the Apollo to your base plates is as simple as it is secure. Just line up the triple-lug end of the tow bar arm with the base plate so that the center lug is positioned between the two tabs of the base plate. Then insert the 1/2" keeper pin through all of the lugs and secure it with the included quick pin.

Heavy-Duty, Vinyl-Coated Safety Cables Included

Blue Ox Apollo Safety Cables

The vinyl-coated safety cables, which have a robust 15,000-lb weight rating, provide added protection should the tow bar ever disconnect during towing. Steel hooks with spring-loaded latches connect each cable to your towed vehicle's base plates and to your motorhome's trailer hitch.

Simple Storage

Blue Ox Apollo Easy Storage

The Apollo can be easily stored on your RV when it's not in use. Once the arms are disconnected from the base plate, just fold them together so they are side by side. Then swing the arms toward your RV, sliding the integrated pin into the bracket located on the shank of the tow bar to secure it in place. Finally, push the arms down so they are parallel with your RV's bumper.

Guide to Flat Towing

Flat towing your vehicle is much more convenient than using a trailer or a tow dolly. These other options take up much more storage space, leaving you less room both at home and at the campsite. In addition, securing your vehicle to a trailer or tow dolly can be a hassle and more time consuming than hooking up with a tow bar.

There are 5 basic components needed when flat towing a vehicle: a tow bar, a base plate kit, a safety cable set, tow bar wiring, and a supplemental braking system.

Towing Basics

The tow bar links your towed car to your motorhome. It attaches to the custom-fit base plates that install on the frame of your towed car. Safety cables ensure that your towed car does not separate from your motorhome in the event that your tow bar becomes detached. Tow bar wiring allows your towed vehicle's signal lights to sync up with your motorhome's tail lights, which is required by law in most states. Finally, the supplemental braking system - also required in most states - brakes your towed car when the brakes in your motorhome are activated, preventing wear on the motorhome and decreasing braking distance for your entire setup.

Video Transcript for Review of Blue Ox Apollo Tow Bar - Hitch Mount Style - BX7470

Jeff: Hello everybody. This is Jeff at etrailer.com. Today, we're going to take a look at this Blue Ox Apollo Motorhome Mount Tow Bar for a two and a half inch hitch. It has a 15,000 lb weight capacity. Now this Apollo tow bar is an all steel tow bar, it's rated for larger tow vehicles, like a full-sized truck or SUV up to 15,000 lbs. This tow bar lets you tow your vehicle safely and securely behind your motorhome.

This portion right here is what'll slide into your two and a half inch trailer hitch receiver on your RV, no ball mounts are necessary. It comes with the included hitch pin and clip for attaching it. Now this is a self-aligning design tow bar. You can hook up to the base plates on your tow vehicle, and then when you drive your RV forward, these arms will extend into a rigid tow-ready position and automatically lock into place. So once you get these hooked up, you can see as you drive your RV forward, these arms will extend out and when they get far enough you'll hear them, just like that they'll lock into place. The handle goes down that locks them into place, same on that arm.

These longer arms will improve turning range to easily maneuver your rig. You can move around gas, pumps, other obstacles with ease and you can take corners without worrying about your towed vehicle contacting your RV. The non-binding latches have these low profile handles, make it easy to unhook your tow bar from multiple angles, just push down on it and that'll release it. You can push it all the way in and lock it into the storage position. And again, just to show you when he extended out, once you get it out long enough, it'll lock it into place. If you notice, it has rubber boots to protect the telescoping arms from dirt and grind.

It does usually triple lug connection, you can see the triple lug design here. These sturdy brackets are on the end of each tow bar arm, they provide a reinforced connection to the base plates. Each arm attaches and detaches from the base plates using these included pins and clips. There's one on each arm. And then when you go to store this, you just release this and push it all the way in just like that.

You can squeeze these together, raise them up and then once it's up against the motorhome, you can put them to either side for storage alongside the motorhome, very easy to store. This is made of a heavy duty steel, helps resist corrosion. The finish on it is a real nice dark gray metallic powder coating. And again, it comes with the safety chains. It has 15,000 lb rated safety cables with the heavy duty drop forge steel hooks that have these spring loaded latches for added security. And on the cable itself, they have a vinyl coating which keeps it from scratching or chipping your tow bar. This part is made in the USA. Again, the application is for two and a half inch by two and a half inch trailer hitch receivers. Weight capacity is 15,000 lbs and the total weight on this tow bar is about 49 lbs. That should do it for the review on the Blue Ox Apollo Motorhome Mount Tow Bar for two and a half inch hitch with a 15,000 lb weight capacity.

Blue Ox products are best in class. Went with the Apollo to tow my F250, but the LOA between coach, dinghy and Blue Ox keeps me out of some states, so I have been towing a Grand Cherokee with no problems at all. Wouldn't consider any other tow bar.

  • Tow Bar to Work With 2" Receiver and an 8,000 lb. Van with Blue Ox Base Plate
The Blue Ox Apollo Tow Bar - Motorhome Mount part # BX7470 is one heavy duty tow bar that is for sure. It is rated to haul vehicles up to 15,000 lbs. It also includes the safety chains you will need and has been designed to work on the Blue Ox base plate currently equipped. Of course this is designed for 2.5" hitches. For your application use the Blue Ox Avail Tow Bar part # BX7420 this will work in the 2" hitch and has a 10,000 lb. capacity. It includes the safety chains and will attach...

  • How Level Does a Tow Bar Need to Be When Flat Towing a Vehicle
This is a really good question. So a tow bar needs to be 3 inches with level going either direction. So 3 inches up on the towed vehicle side or 3 inches up on the tow vehicle side. Most likely you will also need a high low adapter so that the tow bar will be level when you are flat towing. I attached a link to a page that has all of the ones we carry.

  • Highest Capacity Blue Ox Tow Bar that Fits 2020 Mercedes Benz Sprinter 2500
I have a solution for you but there isn't a way to order the Blue Ox Tow Bar part # BX7470 with a 2 inch hitch shank. Instead the highest capacity tow bar that fits the 2 inch hitch size is the Blue Ox Avail part # BX7420 which has a 10,000 lb towing capacity. This does attach to # BLU33MR.

  • Can an Adapter be Used on a Tow Bar with a 2-1/2" Shank for a 2" Hitch Receiver
We have solutions for you, but first: there are no adapters for this application. A tow bar made for 2-1/2" receivers does no allow reduction like 2" to 1-1/4" accessories do. Your only two options are to replace your factory hitch with a higher rated aftermarket one. For your 2017 Ford F-350 Cab and Chassis, the Curt Class V, part # C15845, has a 2-1/2" receiver and the added benefit of having the highest towing capacity of any hitch for this vehicle. Alternatively, you can downgrade...
