Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Spare Tire Carrier Recommendation for a Featherlite Trailer
It sounds like you installed a tongue jack on one side of your Featherlite trailer frame. On the other side of the trailer frame you could install a Fulton Hi Mount Spare Tire Carrier part # FSTC1000301 to mount your spare if you can determine that its compatible. This carrier works on 4 on 4, and 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern wheels that are 10 inch or larger in diameter. This will also fit frames that are up to 3 inches in width and 4 inches in height. I attached a review and an install...

  • Are There 14 Inch or 15 Inch Trailer Tires Less Than 8 Inches
We may be able to help you out, although the reason you cannot find 14 or 15 inch tires that are smaller than a ST205/75R14 is because that is the smallest size, and they are 8 inches wide. For a narrower tire you will need to get smaller, 13 inch wheels, either ST175/80D13 which are 6.6 inches wide and 24 inches in diameter or ST185/80D13 which are 7.2 inches wide and 24.4 inches in diameter. You also need to ensure you have the matching wheel bolt pattern and load capacity. If you are...

Hey Jeffrey, if the axle you have now is between a 2,000 lb and a 2,700 lb rating then yes you could go down to the 10 inch size but if it's a 3,500 or higher then it wouldn't be possible.

  • Bolt Pattern and Recommended Wheel and Tire for Salt Water Boat Trailer with ST175/80r13 Tires
It would be odd for the 4-1/4 inch measurement to be accurate. I've attached an article on measuring bolt pattern for you to confirm your bolt pattern before ordering. If you do end up with the same measurements, you may want to consider changing out your hubs as that isn't a standard size. Based on your wheel size, I believe you will have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern and recommend the Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Tire w/ 13" White Spoke Wheel - LR C Finish # TA43RR. This tire is...

In general, radial ply tires are better for long highway trips whereas bias ply tires are better for short trips that may lead you offroad. However, we only offer bias ply trailer tires in a ST185/80-D13. We currently have 3 wheel/tire combos in your size all of which have a wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2" lug pattern. I have attached these options for you below but you will want to use the attached help article to ensure you have chosen the correct lug pattern. Loadstar Tire/Galvanized Wheel:...

Thanks for reaching out, Jeff! There are a few different ways to get the setup you're looking for. We do offer some pre-mounted tire and wheel combos, like part # AM3S333, which comes with a white powder-coated steel rim. If you’re after something in a silver finish, check out part # AM3S334, this one features a galvanized rim. Just a quick note about galvanized wheels: since they’re hot-dip coated, the finish can have some inconsistencies, like drips or areas where the coating appears...

  • Comparing Radial Vs Bias Ply Tires
There are a few advantages and disadvantages when deciding between bias ply # AM3S334 and radial tires # AM31994. With radial tires, some advantages would be: 1. Improved comfort. 2. Superior heat management and heat dissipation. 3. Excellent tire flexibility and road surface interaction. 4. Superior handling. 5. Lower rolling resistance. Compared to some bias ply tires benefits: 1. Less complicated tire construction and, therefore, typically lower cost. 2. The stiffer sidewall can be...

The best option we have that will fit your wheel and work well is the Lionshead tire part # LHWL101. • Can Slightly Smaller Spare Tire be Used on Trailer to Get Home
Generally, I do recommend that all tires on your trailer be the same size at all times, so ideally your spare will match the existing tires on your trailer. With that being said, the difference between a 175/80-13 and a 175/80-13 tire is only 0.3 of an inch, so if needed in an emergency, the 175 spare tire should be fine to get you home. To be on the safe side, I do still recommend obtaining a matching spare tire when you are able. I have attached a link that will take you to our available...

  • What Makes Trailer Tires Wear on the Inside Only and Can 175/80-13 be Replaced With 185/80-13
There are a couple of things that can lead to the tires wearing on the inside only. Basically what is happening is the top of the tire is leaning in towards the trailer causing most of the weight to ride on the inside. This pretty much means the axle is bent, especially if both sides have the same problem. If it were just one side, there is a chance that is just the spindle that is bent. It will keep wearing on the inside until the issue is resolved and that could mean a new axle. You...

  • Why is Trailer Tire Wearing on the Inside Only?
A wider tire will not solve the issue of your tires wearing down on the inside only. If your trailer tire is wearing on the inside but is not overloaded and your suspension is aligned properly the only other issue that can be causing this is the tires not being inflated to their max psi consistently. On trailer tires you always want to inflate the tire to the maximum cold psi, which will give you the best performance, allowing the tire to wear more slowly and give you optimum gas mileage....

The Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 - Load Range D # AM3S334 has a max speed of 81 mph so the speed mixed with the ambient heat likely had a strong factor. If your tires weren't inflated to 65 psi cold prior to the trip that would also have an impact. This is a great tire and wheel so 7 years likely has taken a toll as well. The tire has a width of 7.2 inches and an outer diameter of 24.4 inches so if looking to upgrade size you will want...

We actually have an FAQ article on trailer tires, part of which covers bias ply tires versus radial tires. I have posted the section below and I have also included a link to the whole FAQ article for you. The main difference between a radial ply and bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. • Can Bias Ply Spare Be Used on Trailer with Radial Tires
Yes, as long as the spare tire is the same size, load range (weight rating) and has the matching wheel bolt pattern you can use a bias ply spare to replace a radial main tire for the short distance you'll travel to get the radial repaired or replaced. For example, the 5-on-4-1/2 bias ply # AM31233 can be used as a spare to replace radial # AM31994. You do not want to run the trailer with mixed tires for any substantial distance but to get you to a repair shop it is fine.
