Radial Tires vs. Bias Tires

Radial tire vs bias tire graphic

Radial ply tires are designed for trailers that are towed on the highway. The cords on a radial tire are positioned at a 90-degree angle to the direction of travel so that they lay across the width of the tire from wheel lip to wheel lip. This construction prevents the cords from rubbing against one another when the tire flexes, unlike the cords on a bias ply tire. As a result, radial tires have less rolling resistance and heat buildup, which leads to a longer tread life and improved steering at higher speeds.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

A little disappointed with the delivery as the tires were delivered by USPS 1 day late but not the end of the world. Overall very pleased with the initial look of the wheels however very disappointed with the age of the tires from week 25 of 2022 versus it currently being June of 2024 meaning of the 5 year manufacturer warranty advertised on e-trailer I only get 3 years as the manufacturer warranty as the date goes from the DOT date stamped on the tire. Only 64 percent of the warranty is still left... I understand the tires being 6 months or even as much as a year old but nearly 2 years old is excessive.

Just received 2 of them today and they look great especially for the price. They should be a nice upgrade to the factory rims and tires on my double jetski trailer

by:

Had a delay on receiving the right order, pulled wrong in shipping. I called e-trailer that afternoon and found a fantastic customer service rep named Virginia answering the phone. She handled the mix up with ease, placed a correct order while I was on the phone with her, and I received the tires/wheel combo within a few days. Mix ups happen in this ol world but it's the undervalued customer service reps who make a bad situation pleasant with outstanding old fashioned customer service! Thank you, Virginia & e-trailer for your service. The product quality? Aluminum upgrade wheels with Kendra 8 ply radials scheduled for our vessel later this week will surely add piece of mind on our travels to the coast with a little style to boot. Respectfully, Clayton ...Lake Wales, Florida

Perfect fit, nice look and seem more durable than the original wheels/tires that came with trailer. I like that is a slightly better PSI capacity. Wife said, "the trailer doesn't look as cheap as before" I put about 75 miles on them for the first trip and they performed great.

by:

Purchased for our car dolly. I decided to upgrade to aluminum wheel. Wow, what a surprise! Excellent quality of tire and the wheel is very nice. Installed them and immediately drove six hours with no issues. Tires arrived quickly and even had the proper inflation upon delivery. Free delivery was great.

by:

Ordering from etrailer was quick and easy as always. Shipping was fast and prices are the best. I replaced my six year old galvanized rims and bias tires for these aluminum rims and radial higher quality tires. They look great on the Jon boat trailer. Now I can use the old ones that still look new for spares. I went up two tire sizes from the original painted rims and tires which makes the trailer ride much better. The only reason I did not give it five stars is the tires were 18 months old off the shelf.

by:

These wheels look great! Big improvement over stock rims. Quick receipt and everything was as advertised.

by:

6/15, thus far it's been a great experience. Fast free shipping, delivery and competitive pricing. Tires and rims look as pictured. We're heading from Orlando to Florida Keys and back, we'll give update on tire quality once we get back(approximately 30 days).

by:

the tires on the rims I received are already 2 years old, tires have a life cycle of 10 years i would prefer new stock not old stock, you should tell customers this in advance. Rims were nice though

Our tires will generally run from around a year to 2 years old. It is worth noting that our warehouse is climate controlled. Most tire manufacturers will say that tires do not age when in proper storage. The tire warranty will start when you receive and mount the tire, regardless of the date code.

by:

Exactly as advertised, and very reasonable pricing when compared to multiple locations. Quick shipping and very informative about status of the order and shipment. Would do business with this seller again!

by:

Product is exactly as described. Packaging and Delivery was phenomenal.
Ordered product from warehouse on Tuesday night with a rush order (1-Day Shipping Fees) and the product was delivered from the warehouse to Los Angeles CA on Thursday. I cannot ask or expect for a better service or delivery.

Swapped out the steelies and low speed tires the trailer came with for the lighter aluminum wheels with higher speed tires. They tow great behind the sidecar and look a treat.

by:

Very good customer service. The tires and mounting was spot on. Only small complaint would be the center cup insert does not lock in place. It will flop around a small amount. Easy solution is to put a small amount of clear silicone adhesive around the the cup and press the cup in place. Otherwise so far zero issues and the tires appear to be wearing well and have good side traction for our heavy 5th wheel in the rain. Highly recommend this combo. They look great on an older trailer.

by:

Really happy with my tire/wheel package upgrade. Replaced the factory grey spokes and tires from 2007 when the original tires finally failed. The wheels were covered in rust from the salt up here. Only towed the trailer about 100 miles since the install but it tows soooooo smooth and looks pretty dang good.
I inadvertently stepped up an inch in tire size when I got the 15” wheels up from the factory 14” because “I know what I’m doing” but the clearance doesn’t seem to be an issue thankfully.
I thought it was just a bigger wheel. Lol

Wheels/tires set are as advertised and shipped in reasonable time. Good quality.

  • Spare Wheel For a Boat Trailer With Lionshead Jaguar 13" X 5" Wheel And 5 On 4-1/2" Bolt Pattern
Currently(7/10/2024) the only size Aluminum Jaguar Trailer Wheel we have is the 16" # 274-000011 you found. As the wheel and tire are only for a spare you can go with one like the Americana AM03 # AM73NR. This is also aluminum so you would not have to worry about corrosion. We do offer this a wheel and tire package with either a ST185/80R13 # KE33JR or ST175/80R13 # KE53JR. You can then use the Spare Tire Cover # 290-1739 to protect the tire from UV damage since it is a spare.

  • Are Trailer Wheel and Tire Combos Balanced
Hey Curtis, so none of our trailer and tire combos like the part # KE33JR are balanced as that's not something that's required for trailer tires. While it seems appealing there actually isn't anything to be gained by having the setups balanced and when people try to do it the weights typically end up falling off.

  • Is The Tires The Same ST205/75D15 And ST185/80D13?
Hello Joe. The ST205/75D15 and ST185/80D13 are not the same at all. The typical ST205/75D15 tire like part # AM32424 is 8.1" wide, 27.3" in diameter and will fit 15" wheel. The typical ST185/80D13 like part # KE33JR is 7.2" wide, 24.6" in diameter and will fit a 13" wheel. So, not only do they require different wheel sizes, but the actual dimensions of the tire are also quite different. The max weight ratings are different too. The only similarity is they are made by the same brand...

  • What Does Karrier AM03 Aluminum Wheel Design Look Like
Hey James, so while we don't have a picture of the # KE33JR exactly yet I attached a picture that shows what the wheel looks like in a different size to give you an idea as its most likely you wanted to just see the wheel design.

Good morning, Cliff. As of today (3/27/24) we are expecting the # KE33JR tire/wheel combo to be in stock in about 2 weeks. Hopefully this means we can take our own pictures and put them on the site within maybe about 3-4 weeks from now. What I can tell you is that the # KE33JR comes with the Kenda AM03 Gun Metal Aluminum Trailer Wheel. I was able to find a picture of this exact wheel on Kenda's website so you can see exactly what it will look like.

  • Recommended Replacement Tire/Wheel for a Longway ZT 501
Hey Nick, it looks like the closest tire/wheel we have to what you're looking for is the Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Aluminum Wheel # KE33JR. These tires are 185/80R/13, have a 5 on 4 1/2 bolt pattern, and has a max load of 1,170 lbs.

  • Recommended Stainless Steel Lug Nuts For A Shorelandr Boat Trailer
Hey Jeremy, For stainless steel lug nuts I'd go with Lionshead's 1/2" -20 # LHLR103 or 9/16"-18 # LHLR110 depending on the diameter of your wheel studs. You could add in a hub cover but it's honestly not necessary and more so just for looks. The Karrier ST185/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire & Wheel # KE33JR has a 3.19" pilot hole so you'd just need to measure how far that dust cover sits out to see if there's a long enough hub cover to fit.
