Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

The offset tire mount is very well designed…. Tire and rim are nice…. Fit great on my whaler

by:

My two tire and wheel combos arrived today. The tires seem to be decent (time will tell), but the wheels are atrocious. The slag left by the galvanization process has poured into a 1/4 inch thick blob on the edge of the rim and is flaking off. If you are looking for a decent wheel these are not it and you should look elsewhere.

Yeah, unfortunately this is a common issue with the galvanized rims. The manufacturer dips the rims then hangs them up to air dry, then they are shipped out. I can send you over to our customer service department to see if we can get some other ones sent out to you.

by:

Ordering was a breeze. Shipped and received in a flash. Etrailer has a new long term customer with me! Great tire/rim combo. They spiced up my little boat pretty good.

by:

Perfect replacement wheels/tires for my 1990 Magic Loader boat trailer. Quick free shipping was a plus. My previous tires were installed in 2008 and just started leaking air. These are supposed to be high quality tires from Tawain (Kenda). We'll see how well they last on my tandem axle trailer with a 4800 lb Wellcraft boat

by:

The trailer tires on rims I ordered came to my house in just a few days. Shipping was included for free and they got here fast. Price was the best I could find so I’m very happy with the entire purchase. I highly recommend trailer.

Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias with Galvanized 5 hole wheels. It has been hard to find a set of 13" tires to take this load weight, but you had them!

Used on a custom built tilt bed trailer that hauls a 1976 "Morrison Trailblazer", one of only 300 built to make trails in the woods as narrow as 24" wide, or up to 6 feet wide. Morrison Trailblazers were the first mechanized trail building machines made, each built one at a time by Jerry Morrison, each one an improvement over the last one built, this one is # 276, his name is "DINO" and this trailer takes him deep into the woods.

No issues with this set of tires and rims

by:

Tire and lock set were in the same box without any filling and the lock set got destroyed. Notified etrailer and they sent a new lock set which was very nice of them. A little filler in the box would have prevented their loss. I have bought from them a few times over the years without issues and will continue to buy in the future. Thank you etrailer!

by:

Great service and fast delivery. We have been using Load Star tires on our boat trailer for years.

by:

These are load range D tires that I needed for my Tritoon. The rims have a good finish that should not rust for a while. etrailer customer service is the best. I called on Thursday to inquire about my order and was told they didn't know when the shipment would arrive. Since I needed the tires quickly, etrailer substituted another tire in stock and I got them the next day with free shipping. Triple AAA plus for customer service.

by:

I'm very impressed with your shipping system: we got our tires/wheels on time as promised and in excellent condition. The real clincher in ordering from you is the free shipping on larger orders. Now that I know that these new wheels fit my homemade trailer (distance between tire sidewall and trailer is critical), I just ordered your 60 inch axle.

by:

I’ve had several purchases and I’ve always had a great experience with etrailer. Shipping is prompt and their products are of high quality. Just received a new set of load rated wheels and tires for my trailer and looking forward to a safe journey. Thanks etrailer!

by:

I was specifically looking for this size wheel and tire assembly in load range D for a Triton trailer. The price was excellent, delivery was quick and as promised. Very satisfied.

by:

This tire and wheel are a spare for my 6 x 12 utility trailer. I mounted it with a mount also purchased from etrailer and secured it with a wheel lock I also purchased from this website. I have made many purchases from etrailer for my boat, utility, and Airstream trailers and have always been very satisfied with every aspect of all my purchases. This business is a KEEPER! Purchase with confidence.

by:

Fast delivery at a fair price. Great product, and I really appreciated the free shipping.

by:

I would like to comment that the wheels purchased look great. Arrived in 4 days from my order. The quality is excellent along with the price. I have attached a picture where I replaced the standard rims, wheels, and hub caps on my Tracker Boat trailer with the new wheels from etrailer. The center piece from my old hub cap set matched perfect with my new galvanized wheels.

by:

The tires are used on my utility trailer and have been used for several trips and performed great. The tires are rated about 81 MPH but I traveled between 65 and 70 mph and had no performance problems. I strongly recommend this tire.

by:

I purchased this tire for my jet ski trailer. Nice tire. I appreciated receiving delivery updates. It arrived on time and in good condition

by:

Best place to get trailer tires

by:

LOVE e-trailer... Thank you...

by:

They seem like excellent tires. Good rims. Fast delivery.

by:

Great service and wheels and tires were as ordered!

by:

bought this as a spare to match my trailer tires. as usual erailer shipped quickly and followed up to make sure everything was received as expected. my go to vendor.

by:

easy ordering and timely delivery. What more could you ask for

by:

Looks great , got here quickly

by:

Excellent product. Tire holder is first class and galvanized. Tire and wheel are also first class. Only suggestion I have is that all the hardware should also be galvanized because many of us use this in a saltwater environment.

We do have numerous tire and wheel combos in size 175/80-13 ready to go. I have included a link to all of the options with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and that come with aluminum wheels (we do not have chrome options). The wheel in tire and wheel combo # AM31242 is galvanized steel.

It is a galvanized wheel, so it should hold up better in your marine application, and the ST175/80-D13 tire is the proper replacement size for your B78x13ST

When we have to enlarge holes here for the install of trailer hitches we usually use a rotabroach tool but the best tool to use is a reamer. Since you're making a relatively small size increase I would find a 2 inch reamer tool for a power drill and go with that.

  • How To Measure The Bolt Pattern On Trailer Wheel While On The Trailer
You sure can measure to find the correct bolt pattern on your wheels if you can see the lugs. On a 5-bolt pattern, the easiest way is to measure from the center of one bolt hole center to the center of the bolt hole next to it. If that measurement is 2-5/8 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. If 2-3/4inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4. If 3 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5, and if it measures 3-1/4 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2. I have attached a helpful article...

  • Comparing Bias Ply and Radial Trailer Tires
Bias ply trailer tires you see more on agricultural and off-road applications but they still work well on pavement. Radial tires track better and run cooler than bias ply tires and are best suited for pavement. A trailer can sway no matter what type of tires are on the trailer. To prevent sway you would use a friction sway control bar, # 83660, or a weight distribution system with sway control. All other things being equal, it is always preferable to have matching tires on your trailer. However, you can use the two different tires if you wish. • Can a Mix of Bias Ply and Radial Trailer Tires be Used at the Same Time
For a short distance, you can use radial and bias tires at the same time, but you would not want to have the mix for long distances or periods of time.
