Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

This tire and wheel are a spare for my 6 x 12 utility trailer. I mounted it with a mount also purchased from etrailer and secured it with a wheel lock I also purchased from this website. I have made many purchases from etrailer for my boat, utility, and Airstream trailers and have always been very satisfied with every aspect of all my purchases. This business is a KEEPER! Purchase with confidence. 359589

Nice tire and rim. Galvanized coating was very nice. Same tire that was on my 5 Star trailer made by loadrite. Rim style was slightly different from my existing trailer tires but it's a spare. 355842

I think the price is fair and the product looks good. I will say that reaching the company is difficult if you have a question and we had a shipping issue due to the company which made it difficult for the shipper and I to connect. Overall a good deal - but a headache to get the package in my hands due to etrailer not putting my full address on the box. 882944

Best Price, great selection and prompt delivery. I bought these to replace the tires on my Pontoon Boat trailer (they were14 years old). It was apparent that I could replace tire and wheel for a bit less than buying the tire, valve stem and having them replaced at a local shop (8 ply rating requires professional equipment). Saving one of the old tires and wheel as a spare. The galvanized wheel is an upgrade from my original rusty ones. This is my 4th order from etrailer but it will not be my last. 772049

The tires arrived quickly and were a perfect fit for my boat trailer. Although I haven't taken the trailer anywhere as of yet, the tires are of sturdy construction and I expect them to perform well. My experience in ordering both tires and a hitch from eTrailer has been excellent. 769768

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Should I Get Higher Load Range Tires Than Needed
The higher load range tires, part # AM31242 that you looked at, really won't help or hurt you. They don't protect any better against nails or anything else that can damage them compared to lower rated tires like part # AM3S060 and you certainly don't need the extra capacity. On the other hand the flexing of a tire doesn't have much bearing on the quality of your ride. Sure it'll have some but your suspension should take up most of that. If it were me I'd likely go with the D rated tires...

  • Are There 14 Inch or 15 Inch Trailer Tires Less Than 8 Inches
We may be able to help you out, although the reason you cannot find 14 or 15 inch tires that are smaller than a ST205/75R14 is because that is the smallest size, and they are 8 inches wide. For a narrower tire you will need to get smaller, 13 inch wheels, either ST175/80D13 which are 6.6 inches wide and 24 inches in diameter or ST185/80D13 which are 7.2 inches wide and 24.4 inches in diameter. You also need to ensure you have the matching wheel bolt pattern and load capacity. If you...

  • How To Measure The Bolt Pattern On Trailer Wheel While On The Trailer
You sure can measure to find the correct bolt pattern on your wheels if you can see the lugs. On a 5-bolt pattern, the easiest way is to measure from the center of one bolt hole center to the center of the bolt hole next to it. If that measurement is 2-5/8 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. If 2-3/4inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4. If 3 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5, and if it measures 3-1/4 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2. I have attached a helpful...

  • What Size Radial Tires to Replace Existing B78-13ST Load Range B Tires on Boat Trailer
The B78-13 tire you have corresponds to a ST175/80-13 tire size. Radial tires are an excellent choice. They tend to run cooler than bias-ply tires, which will lead to longer tire life. If you are needing the tire only, we offer that size in a radial load range D (1610 lb capacity @ 65 psi) or a load range C (1360 lbs @ 50 psi). Bias ply trailer tires you see more on agricultural and off-road applications but they still work well on pavement. Radial tires track better and run cooler than bias ply tires and are best suited for pavement. A trailer can sway no matter what type of tires are on the trailer.
