Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

I took my boat on a road trip only to have a blow out. I made it to my destination on the spare but found out that the original tires were not the correct load range. I ordered a new wheel/tire for the damaged one and a new tire to replace the other one. They were delivered while I was off on the boat for 3 weeks and I put the new ones on before heading home. The price was reasonable and the service was good.

My new wheels and tires showed up with no flaws and ready to go. There are two sets in the photo, just stacked.

This tire and wheel are a spare for my 6 x 12 utility trailer. I mounted it with a mount also purchased from etrailer and secured it with a wheel lock I also purchased from this website. I have made many purchases from etrailer for my boat, utility, and Airstream trailers and have always been very satisfied with every aspect of all my purchases. This business is a KEEPER! Purchase with confidence.

Came packaged, on the rims, almost proper inflation. Tires seem very well and the recommended measuring instructions worked well for my 5 lug. The finish on the rims leave a lot to be desired. Look cheaply painted or chromed. We will see how they hold up.

The wheels are great! I’m looking to replace the top vent, have a recommendation?
John s - 07/09/2018

We have several complete vent replacements, as well the replacement lids, and vent and fan combo upgrades. It would just depend on your preferences and what you are looking for as the replacement. I have provided a link to our roof vent page for your reference.

Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias with Galvanized 5 hole wheels. It has been hard to find a set of 13" tires to take this load weight, but you had them! Used on a custom built tilt bed trailer that hauls a 1976 "Morrison Trailblazer", one of only 300 built to make trails in the woods as narrow as 24" wide, or up to 6 feet wide. Morrison Trailblazers were the first mechanized trail building machines made, each built one at a time by Jerry Morrison, each one an improvement over the last one built, this one is # 276, his name is "DINO" and this trailer takes him deep into the woods.

Nice looking wheel (better than what is on the trailer) and arrived ready to go. The tire I initially ordered was out of stock, so they contacted me and offered a different tire that was actually better. Great service and fast shipping!

Its a spare tire, so I havent used it fortunately. The mount and cover have worked with no problems.

These are load range D tires that I needed for my Tritoon. The rims have a good finish that should not rust for a while. etrailer customer service is the best. I called on Thursday to inquire about my order and was told they didn't know when the shipment would arrive. Since I needed the tires quickly, etrailer substituted another tire in stock and I got them the next day with free shipping. Triple AAA plus for customer service.

Not much to say. Replacement Tires and Wheels for a boat trailer. I have ran a set just like these for almost 6 years and they still have about 50% of the tread left. My spare is about 11 years old so I bought these to put on trailer. t The old ones are now spares and my old spares are now ready for the trash.

- AM31242

Excellent product. Tire holder is first class and galvanized. Tire and wheel are also first class. Only suggestion I have is that all the hardware should also be galvanized because many of us use this in a saltwater environment.

This tire and wheel combo was a very good price and the delivery was much faster then anticipated. The galvanized wheel is perfect for my boat trailer spare

- AM31242

I would like to comment that the wheels purchased look great. Arrived in 4 days from my order. The quality is excellent along with the price. I have attached a picture where I replaced the standard rims, wheels, and hub caps on my Tracker Boat trailer with the new wheels from etrailer. The center piece from my old hub cap set matched perfect with my new galvanized wheels.

Best Price, great selection and prompt delivery. I bought these to replace the tires on my Pontoon Boat trailer (they were14 years old). It was apparent that I could replace tire and wheel for a bit less than buying the tire, valve stem and having them replaced at a local shop (8 ply rating requires professional equipment). Saving one of the old tires and wheel as a spare. The galvanized wheel is an upgrade from my original rusty ones. This is my 4th order from etrailer but it will not be my last.

Comments
Tires and rims still look great. Just checked the pressure after the winter, preparing to use the boat. The pressure in both tires were still within 2 psi of the original pressure. When I need more, I will be back to etrailer!

I blew a tire on the way to northern Oklahoma from Dallas Tx. Luckily I had a spare. I looked up etrailer once I got there, ordered a tire, had it shipped to hotel. Worked out great. Tire fit, was proper size and weight rating. Only downside was I had to order it with the wheel, but given the circumstances it was OK. I use the boat trailer once a week and have had no issues out of the tire. Tread still looks great.

  • Best Replacement Wheel and Tire Combination for the B78-13ST Tires on my Boat Trailer
I spoke with our in-house tire expert. Your best bet would be a 175-80. The wheel and tire combo you were looking at, part # AM31242 from Americana, should do just fine. It is a galvanized wheel, so it should hold up better in your marine application, and the ST175/80-D13 tire is the proper replacement size for your B78x13ST. I am including some links to information that will be helpful when picking out a tire and wheel for your setup.

  • How To Measure The Bolt Pattern On Trailer Wheel While On The Trailer
You sure can measure to find the correct bolt pattern on your wheels if you can see the lugs. On a 5-bolt pattern, the easiest way is to measure from the center of one bolt hole center to the center of the bolt hole next to it. If that measurement is 2-5/8 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2. If 2-3/4inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4. If 3 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5, and if it measures 3-1/4 inches - the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2. I have attached a helpful article...
