Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Working good with no problems

Bought these to replace the small 12in wheels that came with my trailer, and I've been extremely happy with them so far. They look great, added nice clearance for my trailer, and increased the speed rating to allow me to comfortably travel at highway speeds. I've made two long trips with the trailer since I bought these (350+ miles), and was very happy with the performance on the road. Visually, I feel these wheels/ tires have improved the look of my trailer also, so that's a nice plus as well. Would definitely recommend these wheels/ tires.

by:

Wheel was not balanced, made the whole trailer shake, had to have that done, along with two other wheels purchased from etrailer. The tire place showed me a weld on the rim that was definitely not done by a professional, they recommended only using that wheel as a spare only. The other two wheels were in good shape, just badly out of balance.

Typically trailer tires will not come balanced like vehicle tires are. They are meant just to support the trailer load versus providing a smooth ride for people. You can have the trailer tires balanced. Just remember that many trailer wheels are centered by the position of the lug bolts [these wheels are lug-centric] and not the center bore of the wheel. For best results, have them balanced using a pin plate adapter. This mimics the way a lug-centric wheel is mounted to a hub.

These tires and wheels are in use every day on my honey bee trailer. Great product and recommend them to anyone who wants tires for their trailers.

by:

It’s better than I expected. Extremely happy.

by:

Good looking wheels and tires.. making a kayak trailer from an old boat trailer with a 4 lug axle.. these are just a fit and a good replacement for old 12” wheels

by:

Arrived quickly. Appears to be a good product for a great price. Put them on the trailer but won’t know for sure for several months. Seems to be as advertised

by:

Wheels and tires look and perform great! This was used on a motorcycle “trike” kit assembly. Perfect for this application!

by:

Appears to be of good quality. Unfortunately no paperwork as to warranty and recommended tire pressures. Now I can travel faster than 45 mph! Lol.

by:

Great tires for th kayak trailer. These made a huge difference.

by:

A great product in a timely arrival, the tires and wheels fit like they were supposed to and they look great.

by:

This tire and wheel is as advertised.
It
is a spare for my very old boat trailer - to limp me home on surface streets if get a flat.
Doing its job fine.

by:

I ordered 2 replacements tires for my boat trailer. I decided to get rims as well since I needed a spare and with the cost of mounting tires, I figured to break even selling the other original as a spare.

My initial impression of the rims and tires is great. In fact, I was even surprised as I expected some tires off a shelf with a layer of accumulated dust. Not the case at all. These were clean and shiny with not even a scuff. I ordered 2 and they were shipped in a box! Frankly, I was impressed and I don't impress easily.

Shipping was UPS and tracking was accurate. Product arrived on time.

I also want to add that I appreciate the short hold times and informed staff at etrailer. They proved very helpful on my purchase.

Very pleased with these tires.

I have put quite a few miles on these tires and they have held up very well. Very pleased with my purchase and if I had the chance, would buy them again from etrailer.

by:

Ordering was simple and easy enough, I ordered the wheels (galvanized rims) and new tires. The web site showed me how to tell my wheel size, received and installed both on my trailer in a few minutes each side. Price was great and a name brand quality that I was looking for . I highly recommend e trailer! South Florida boat trailer salt water

Most excellent! Still happy with my purchases

by:

Tire arrived flat. I inflated to proper pressure and within a couple days it was flat again. Note, these tires were never used and the trailer I installed them on never left the garage. So, zero mileage on the tires. I. Called your phone number listed only to be told I had to go to the tire Manufacture to figure out how to return the tire, if they would even allow me to. So if you want to deal with this company and take your chance on any sort of customer service you are in the right spot. I’ll take my future business elsewhere.

by:

Great Customer service, great packaging and shipping speed. Overall 5 Stars.

by:

Arrived on time and appears to be a good value.

by:

Nice setup.

by:

I would never purchase this model of tire again. First trip, less than 350 miles on tires, the left one blew out completely (a very large rip about a foot long). The total trailer weight for this maiden trip was only 500 lbs, so only 250 lbs load on the tire.

Also, I was surprised by the tread pattern. Looked nothing like a road trailer tire or even a car road tire that I have used. Looked more for off-road, yet with without thick nobbies.

I'm anticipating some small partial warranty refund, but after paying tire disposal fees, and realizing the matching tire is not to be trusted; I'll be out about $[XX] bucks. I didn't expect this from an etrailer purchase. Granted etrailer's customer service is quick & polite, but I'm still out $[XX].

by:

Excellent site for trailer needs.

by:

Showed up quickly and still going strong a year later. Nothing fancy but just what I needed for an old fishing boat trailer. Once I put these on I found out I also needed to replace the springs and axle mount as well!

by:

tires were better than expected and fit perfectly!
this is my second time using
e-trailer and I will again in the future.
excellent communication from the time I purchased to the time they arrived! great company to deal with thank you guys..

by:

Efficient, knowledgeable, and helpful, I've used etrailer for 2 towbars and now wheels and they are a great company to deal with.

by:

Good tires at a very good price with quick shipping

by:

Looks like good quality. Very fast and free shipping. No complaints here. Thanks!

  • Replacement Tire Recommendation for a B78-13 Trailer Tire
Yes, your Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 4 on 4 - Load Range B # AM3S040 would be a great option for replacing the tires on your boat trailer. The 4 on 4" bolt pattern can be verified by measuring center to center of opposite bolt holes and then you just need to check that the 1,100 lb load range B rating is high enough for your boat and trailer combined. Please note you'll combine the weight rating of both tires so altogether you're looking at 2,200...

  • Can a Harbor Freight Boat Trailer with 4.80x8 Tires be Switched to 175/80-13 Trailer Tires
There are several things to consider when switching to larger tires and wheels on a trailer. First you need to consider the height difference. On a 4.80x8 trailer tire, you are looking at a diameter of about 16 inches. On a 13 inch, like # AM3S040, the diameter is 26 inches. That 8 inch difference means that the top of the tire will be 4 inches higher than your existing tires. You would need to remove the fenders, if equipped, for the tire to fit. You also have to consider width. A 4.80x8...

  • Can Trailer Wheel and Tire with Size 5.30-12 Upgrade to 13 inch Setup
It's fairly common for trailer wheel/tire combos to be changed like you asked about. Assuming you have the additional fender clearance you could replace your current 5.3-12 tire that is mounted on a 4 inch wheel with a 4 bolt pattern with a 175/80-13 like the Loadstar Wheel and Tire part # AM3S040. This will be right at 2 inches taller and would take up 1 inch of your fender clearance. The advantage of going to a bigger tire is a little more ground clearance, more weight capacity, slightly...

  • Do Trailer Wheel and Tires Come Machine Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What some manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).
