Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Good looking wheels and tires.. making a kayak trailer from an old boat trailer with a 4 lug axle.. these are just a fit and a good replacement for old 12” wheels

by:

Bought these to replace the small 12in wheels that came with my trailer, and I've been extremely happy with them so far. They look great, added nice clearance for my trailer, and increased the speed rating to allow me to comfortably travel at highway speeds. I've made two long trips with the trailer since I bought these (350+ miles), and was very happy with the performance on the road. Visually, I feel these wheels/ tires have improved the look of my trailer also, so that's a nice plus as well. Would definitely recommend these wheels/ tires.

by:

extremely satisfied with the entire process! I had questions and called and was pleased with everything!

by:

Ordering was simple and easy enough, I ordered the wheels (galvanized rims) and new tires. The web site showed me how to tell my wheel size, received and installed both on my trailer in a few minutes each side. Price was great and a name brand quality that I was looking for . I highly recommend e trailer! South Florida boat trailer salt water

by:

Great tires for th kayak trailer. These made a huge difference.

by:

I ordered 2 replacements tires for my boat trailer. I decided to get rims as well since I needed a spare and with the cost of mounting tires, I figured to break even selling the other original as a spare.

My initial impression of the rims and tires is great. In fact, I was even surprised as I expected some tires off a shelf with a layer of accumulated dust. Not the case at all. These were clean and shiny with not even a scuff. I ordered 2 and they were shipped in a box! Frankly, I was impressed and I don't impress easily.

Shipping was UPS and tracking was accurate. Product arrived on time.

I also want to add that I appreciate the short hold times and informed staff at etrailer. They proved very helpful on my purchase.

Very pleased with these tires.

Comments
I have put quite a few miles on these tires and they have held up very well. Very pleased with my purchase and if I had the chance, would buy them again from etrailer.

Appears to be of good quality. Unfortunately no paperwork as to warranty and recommended tire pressures. Now I can travel faster than 45 mph! Lol.

by:

TIRES AND RIMS ARRIVED, NOT DROKEN OR FLAT, GOOD CONDITION. EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED.

by:

Showed up quickly and still going strong a year later. Nothing fancy but just what I needed for an old fishing boat trailer. Once I put these on I found out I also needed to replace the springs and axle mount as well!

by:

As advertised. Quick delivery.

Comments
A little disappointed now. Trailer is used primarily on the farm behind an atv. I needed to take the atv into town for service so loaded into the trailer and towed it with my pickup. Above 55mph there was a vibration that I could feel in the truck! I took the wheels and mounted tires to Discount Tires to be balanced. When I picked them up the technician told me that one of the wheels did not run true. So now when I have to take the trailer on the highway I have to stay below 55!

Ask the Experts about this Kenda Trailer Tires and Wheels

  • Do Trailer Wheel and Tires Come Machine Balanced
The tire and wheel combos we carry are not machined balanced. You can have the tire and wheel combos balanced at a local tire shop if you wanted to. What some manufacturers will do is line up the light spot on the tire with the heavy spot on the wheel. This is a type of balancing but not like how car tires are balanced (with weights on a balancing machine).

The Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire w/ 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S040 that you referenced will work very nicely on your 1966/67 Aristocrat Lo Liner. This tire also has an excellent speed rating of 81 mph and the galvanized wheel, as you mentioned, will provide superior rust resistance....

  • Old trailer rim
If you somehow got a tire for a 13 inch wheel to fit a 14 inch rim I cannot safely recommend that you drive with that setup. Usually, a 175/70-13 is a passenger car tire. The closest fit for a trailer tire size would be a 175/80-13. For a rim and tire with that size that would fit your 4 on 4 bolt pattern I would recommend the part # AM3S040. This has a pilot diameter of 2.65 inches. The only other option for if you have a different pilot diameter would be the # AM3S101 which has a pilot...

Sure, you can go from 12 inch to 13 inch wheels and tires on your boat trailer that has 4-bolt hubs. • Trailer Tire Recommendation to Replace Tire Size P155/80R13
The tire size you have is for passenger vehicles since it starts with the letter P. You shouldn't run that style of tire on a trailer so replacing what you have is the right move. We have a very similar size as 175/80-13 that is rated for trailer use. For a wheel and tire you'd want the part # AM31985 for if you have a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern or part # AM3S040 for if you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern.

  • Tracker Pontoon 13 inch Trailer Wheel Recommendation
The rivets you described are just for looks and do not serve an actual purpose. For a 13 inch wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern in a galvanized finish the part # AM20234 would work for you. Or if you have a 4 on 4 inch bolt pattern the # AM20224 would work. Galvanized wheels are great for boat trailers since they do a great job fighting corrosion. Or for a wheel and tire the part # AM31994 for a 5 lug wheel and part # AM3S040 for a 4 lug.

  • Speed Rating for Trailer Tire AM3S040
The speed rating for the trailer tire part # AM3S040 that you referenced is 65 mph. If you wanted a higher speed rated tire we have the part # C17513C which is rated for up to 81 mph. This tire is also a radial which is preferred to the bias ply tire you referenced. The main difference between a radial ply and a bias ply tire is how the tire is constructed. • Can a Harbor Freight Boat Trailer with 4.80x8 Tires be Switched to 175/80-13 Trailer Tires
There are several things to consider when switching to larger tires and wheels on a trailer. First you need to consider the height difference. On a 4.80x8 trailer tire, you are looking at a diameter of about 16 inches. On a 13 inch, like # AM3S040, the diameter is 26 inches. That 8 inch difference means that the top of the tire will be 4 inches higher than your existing tires. You would need to remove the fenders, if equipped, for the tire to fit. You also have to consider width. A 4.80x8...
