Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

  • Are Your Trailer Tire and Wheel Packages Pre-Balanced?
Our trailer wheel and tire combos come from the manufacturer mounted. As trailer tires do not require balancing most manufacturers will not balance their tire packages like the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S160. We do offer Counteract Tire Balancing Beads # CA66VR that you can add to each wheel that will balance the tire while you are driving. They are also available as a 4 Pack # CA83VR if you are doing all 4 wheels on a tandem axle trailer. I...

  • Replacement Wheel and Tire for a 1999 Kendon Motorcycle Trailer
I took a look at Kendon's website and confirmed that the trailers made before 2014 have ST175/80R13 bias ply tires on them. With this in mind you will want the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire item # AM3S160. This has a galvanized 13" x 4-1/2" wheel with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. This is a load range C tire with a maximum capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel item # AM31994 will also work with your trailer but you...

  • Best Trailer Tire Recommendation for Size ST175/80-13
Radial tires are generally preferred over bias ply tires. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially when the tire is under a load. A tire that runs cooler will last longer. Best recommendation I can make would be the Lionshead tire part # LHWL101. This radial tire has a weight capacity of 1,360-lb max load at 50 psi, has a speed rating of 71...

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a 13 Inch Tire for Small Trailer Carrying a Sailboat
A lot of times what happens with trailer tires is that the trailer is not used often so the tires sit and can get dry rot. Then, when they are used, they might blow out or wear quickly and people might think it is the construction of the tire or the brand that is no good when in reality the tires were not properly maintained. Another issue is that sometimes people use vehicle tires not rated for the capacities typically handled by trailers instead of trailer tires. This can cause the...

  • Need ST175/70R13 Radial Tire And Galvanized Wheel 5 On 4-1/2 Inch For 1989 Bass Tracker Trailer
On your 1989 Bass Tracker trailer you will need to check the side of your tire and see what load range is on your current tire. It will be either a load range C (6 ply rated) which has a maximum load of 1,360 lbs. at 50 psi. or a load range D (8 ply rated) with a maximum load of 1,610 at 65 psi. I have both of the load ranges available in the ST175/80R13 radial tire size with a 5 on 4-1/2 galvanized wheel. The Karrier ST175/80R13 Radial Trailer Tire with 13 Inch Galvanized Wheel - 5 on...

  • Recommendation for Trailer Tires to Replace 6.5 X 13 Tires on a Boat Trailer
If the wheel size on your boat trailer is 6-1/2 inches wide overall by 13 inches then you can use either ST175/80-13 tires and wheels such as # AM3S160 or ST185/80-13 tires and wheels such as # AM3S334. These tire and wheel combos come with galvanized wheels so they are great for marine applications like boat trailers. They also both have a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern. I have included some links on these tires and trailer tires in general for you.

  • Replacement 4 on 4.5 Bolt Pattern Trailer Rim and Radial Tire
The tire size ST175/80R13 is pretty standard, so we can definitely get you replacements for the tires. I suggest going with the Taskmaster Provider ST175/80R13 Radial Tire # TTWTRTM1758013C. These are rated up to 1,360 pounds at 50 psi and also has an M speed rating, which means it is rated up to 81 miles per hour. On the other hand, the wheels are proving to be more difficult. The 4 on 4.5 bolt pattern was used on older vehicles and wasn't really ever used for trailers. At least that...

  • Recommended Narrower Tire for 2-Place Karavan Snowmobile Trailer
My research indicates that Karavan used 205/65-10 tires on their 2 place snowmobile trailers, mounted on a wheel with a 5 lug on a 4-1/2 inch bolt circle. You can certainly go with a taller tire, but you'll want to retain a bare minimum of 3 inches from the top of the tire to the inside of the fender or wheel well when the trailer is loaded so the tires don't rub. For a narrower radial tire mounted on a galvanized rim with a 5 lug on 5-1/2 inch bolt pattern, I'd recommend the # AM31202...

  • Can 175/80D13 Tires of C and D Load Ratings be Mixed on a Trailer
The two 175/80D13 tires/wheels you referenced, Load Range C # AM3S160 and Load Range D # AM31985, will both have an overall diameter of approximately 24-inches, give or take a small fraction. The Load Range B and C tires/wheels will share a 6.6-inch section width while a D-range will have a section width of 7-inches. We do not recommend mixing tire types, sizes or load ranges but for example in the case of a spare tire that will be used for only a short distance (and at or below its speed...

  • What is the Trailer Tire Metric Equivalent to a 4.80 x 12 Trailer Tire
The closest metric trailer tire size to a 4.80x12 is going to be a 145/80-12. The typical diameter of a 4.80x12 tire is 20.5 inches. On a 145/80-12, it is 21.3 inches. So the metric size will be a little over 1/4 inch taller. Make sure to measure the clearance around the tire to make sure it will fit. These two different sizes fit a 4 inch rim, but have different load capacities. The metric tire has higher capacities. You will still need to make sure you stay within the limits of the trailer...

  • Uprgading Wheels and Tires and Regular Bearing Maintenance
Depending on the clearance of your fenders you should have no problem changing to a 13" wheel and tire. You will need a minimum 1/2" more space than you currently have to accommodate the larger tire. I recommend the Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel - 5 on 4-1/2 item # AM3S160. These are load range c tires, they have a capacity of 1,360 lbs at 50 psi, and have a maximum speed of 81 mph. You should inspect your bearings annually or every 3,000 miles....

  • Do All Small Utility Trailers Have the Same Center Bore Measurement For Their Wheels
No, the center bore measurements on all small utility trailers will not be the same. There are a number of factors that can play a role. That being said, if the correct tire and wheel size for your trailer is a 13" wheel, with a 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern and ST175/80D13 tires like the # AM3S160 you mentioned, then the 3.19" bore is almost certainly correct. All of the bias tires with that size wheel and bolt-pattern that we carry have the same 3.19" pilot hole. The only way to be 100% certain...

  • Taller Tire Upgrade Recommendation for 5.30 x 12 Tire on PWC/Boat Trailer
Your current tires are about 21.9 inches in diameter when inflated. We don't offer any tires compatible with 12 inch wheels that would be any taller than that, so to gain more height you'd need to go up to a 13 inch wheel and use a 175/80-13 tire which would measure about 24 inches in diameter. You want to see 3 inches of clearance between the top of the tire and the underside of the fender at a minimum when the trailer is under load. The 175/80-13 would move the tire 1 inch closer to...

  • Correct Spare Wheel/Tire for PWC Trailer with 185/80-13 or 175/80-13 Tires
I recommend going with the the same size spare as what's used on the trailer currently. We have options for both 175/80-13 and 185/80-13. I recommend going with the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S160 or Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S334. I am not quite sure why the manual list 185/80-13 for the wheel and 175/80-13 for the tire to be honest but so long as you go with the size currently on the trailer there will be no issues.

Special trailer (ST) tires should be inflated to the maximum air pressure that is stamped on the sidewall of the tire. It will be stamped with a designation of maximum load at a maximum psi.
