Bias Tires vs. Radial Tires

Bias vs. radial tire graphic

Bias ply tires are designed for off-road or agricultural applications. They are built with thick, durable nylon cords that are positioned at a 30- to 45-degree angle to the direction of travel. The layers alternate in a crisscross pattern, making the sidewalls stiffer so that the entire tire is able to flex easily. As a result, the tire provides a smooth ride and improved handling when trailering on uneven surfaces.

Determining the Bolt Pattern

The first number in the bolt pattern is the number of bolt holes. The second number denotes the diameter, in inches, of the circle on which the bolt holes sit.

Bolt Pattern - Odd

To determine the bolt-circle diameter on wheels with an odd number of bolt holes, measure from the center of any bolt hole to the point halfway between the two bolt holes directly across from the first. (Example: "5 on 4-1/2" means 5 bolt holes with 4-1/2" measured to a point halfway between the opposite bolt holes.)

Bolt Pattern - Even

On wheels with an even number of bolt holes, measure from the center of one bolt hole to the center of the hole directly across from it. (Example: "8 on 6-1/2" means 8 bolt holes with 6-1/2" from the center of one hole to the center of another on the opposite side.)

Bolt Pattern - Side

Measuring the distance from the center of one bolt hole on the wheel to the center of a bolt hole right next to it can also help to determine the bolt pattern.

  • If D = 2-5/8", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-1/2"
  • If D = 2-3/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 4-3/4"
  • If D = 3", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5"
  • If D = 3-1/4", then the bolt pattern is 5 on 5-1/2"

Average Customer Rating:  4.9 out of 5 stars   (4174 Customer Reviews)

I ordered two of these tires and got only one. UPS says it was delivered as if it were complete. I've got video from my Ring video doorbell of the UPS guy getting out of his truck with one tire and a box of TireSavers, setting it by my front door, pushing the doorbell, then getting back into his truck and driving away. I was out the door within the next minute but I couldn't catch him before he left.

I wish etrailer had included a UPS tracking number (beginning with 1Z) instead of that internal tracking number you used.

Then about an hour later, I got an email from UPS saying the order had been delivered. Well, kind of.

I called etrailer and they said the order was split up and I would receive the other tire later today but that didn't happen. Nor do I have any email proof that there were two separate shipments. It looks like I may be screwed.

I finally got a live human being at UPS to look into this and they claim I will hear from them tomorrow, as long as I stay by my phone until they do.

This has not been a pleasant experience. I gave two points for the rest of the order, which I was very happy with. But you lost three points for putting me through this today. I changed the one tire on my boat trailer already but I would have liked to have finished the whole job today so I could be done with it.

There! Aren't you glad you asked me to review my shopping experience today?

I will have our Customer Service team reach out to you.

Super fast delivery. Tires and rims were just as described on the website. I used these on my Bayliner 18’ ski boat trailer. Perfect match for the old ones. The lug nuts on the trailer were frozen so I sprayed them with Liquid Wrench and inserted a 5’ long metal pole I happened to have over the socket wrench (see photo), and with the added leverage of the pole, was able to get all the lug nuts loosened.

Arrived yesterday. Found a good spot to mount the tire. and had it all set in less than 30 minutes. And the wheel matches the ones on my trailer!

Have not installed them on trailer yet, big restoration on boat and trailer In progress.

I purchased two of these tires to replace my Carlisle Class B boat trailer tires. I just installed them on my trailer so I can't comment on how they perform. They are nice tires with the galvanized rims. I also purchased the Fulton Hi-Mount tire mount to use for my spare tire. Worked with Corey at eTrailer. Received my tires promptly. Appreciate the personalized customer service Corey provided.

excellent tire and wheel ,bought it for a spare for my boat trailer , excellent price ,delivered on time , these folks never let you down!!always use these for my next purchase, thanks again .

Spare tire and Fulton mount arrived in perfect condition and on schedule. Nice addition to the boat, and way cheaper than my local marine dealer. Road trip approved.

I wasn't sure about the size of my trailor tire. The rep I spoke to was friendly and helpfull. I now have my tire and it is the right size. couldn't have a more plesent expricence.

I have about 3000 miles on them and they have worked well. They hold air well and track true and straight. I keep them at the recommended pressure and do not overload them. They support a 17' boat that has a total weight of 1900 LBS. That includes trailer, boat and motor. Very little corrosion but I keep them rinsed off after saltwater use and also they are covered from the sun.

Great service as usual. Wheel and tire as described but very disappointed in the galvanized wheel finish. It looks like aluminum foil. It’s a spare so it’s not a big deal but I wouldn’t run it as my regular wheel.

The tires apear to be of a good quality. They look sharp installed. To make a better end result I took some black paint and painted the hub, springs, under side of fender, and the lug nuts. I use anti seize on the threads just for future ease. I would recommend this product to anyone looking for a good quality rim and tire. This has been another awesome experience with Etrailer, last project was redoing my boat trailer which was a breeze with the quality products. That project consisted of new springs, rims and tires, new U bolts, and toped it off with a set of LED submersible lights. I will definitely use this company again, not only due to the quality but the price is not bad.

Great tires have held air pressure and the trailer tows nicely behind the tow vehicle

Good product and delivered on time. I bought it as a spare...just need to figure out where to mount it.

Wheel came in on time, it looks to be a good spare.

Great price, fast delivery, excellent products. Haven't used this spare yet, but it looks good mounted on the frame of my pontoon trailer with the economy locking u-bolt ordered at the same time. I am a repeat customer and will continue to be. Thanks for the great value and service.

Fortunately, I havent had to use the spare yet. But it is a comfort knowing it is there and in good condition. I continue to be very pleased with this purchase.

Needed spare tires for 2 trailers each with different tire sizes. etrailer made it easy to find both same make and sizes and order hardware for attaching to trailer frames. Prices were comparable and brands were available to match both my trailer's tires. I will definately buy from etrailer again in the future. HIGHLY Recommended!!

Excellence Product was very satisfactory I recommend To anyone Thank you for excellence product and service

Right size, good replacement.

I don't have a lot of miles on the tires since they are on a boat trailer I only use 2-3 times per year but they are still holding air and looking good.

At first I was a bit dismayed that the tire/wheel combo I ordered was unavailable. But I was offered a suitable substitute and the entire order was rapidly dispatched and received in a timely manner. I was very pleased with my order and the various items... so much so I immediately decided to order another wheel/tire combo for one of my trailers and use the two nice new wheels/tires intsead and use one of the old originals as the spare! Great products, fast service, super helpful customer service and they know their products! Thanks etrailer! I'll be doing business with you again real soon!

Quick and easy purchase. Packaging was great and easy to move.

Received tires today. Took half hour to put them on the old way. Look great, tow great. Oh yeah rim's look awesome also. Thanks etrailer.

Repairing a tandem axle boat trailer for 1987 Grady White, I found the keel roller, shaft, and guide rollers on back had deteriorated. Locally I could only find the "Heavy Duty," but needed the Super Heavy Duty. After a couple of failed attempts locally, I found the necessary items on eTrailer and had them delivered to my door-- promptly. Further, right before ordering I noticed a flat tire. Although I was able to get a new one mounted on that galvanized rim locally, I decided a spare would increase my comfort level when towing, so had one included in the eTrailer order. Now ready for fishing season.

I purchased this product for a spare for my utility trailer. It looks great mounted to the side of my trailer.

The spare tire still is mounted to the side of my trailer and still has air in it. I havent had a chance to use it yet... Thank God. But, Im sure it will work if I need it.
Bill H - 05/28/2014

The tires and wheels I received seemed to be good quality. The only problem I
had, was I ordered three, two tires had 40 psi and one tire only had 26 psi. I do not usually get tires in boxes Etrailer could save a lot not using the boxes.

I was heading for a fishing trip in 8 days. Taking my boat around 600 miles. I noticed my trailer tires were worn pretty bad so I ordered new tires from etrailer. I felt I didn't need to pay extra for faster shipping. After a couple days, I got worried that I might not received my new tires in time. I called etrailer and asked if I could pay more for faster shipping. They said I couldn't pay more since my order was already processed. I COMPLETELY UNDERSTOOD, MY FAULT. The next day I received my New Tires. All is good for my fishing trip in 3 days. I Rate Etrailer Service A+++ and my new Tries A+++ Thank You Etrailer, You're Are The Bestest!

  • Rim and Tire Recommendation for Use on a 1989 Easyloader Trailer
From a clearance point of view, the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13 inch Galvanized Wheel, part # AM3S160, should work fine since you have plenty of clearance. The rim that is on the # AM3S160 has a 5 on 4-1/2 inch bolt pattern, you will want to confirm that that is the bolt pattern hub you have on your 1989 Easyloader Trailer. • Recommended Spare Tire For A Karavan Boat Trailer With 13" Wheels And 5 Bolt Pattern
Though the 5 on 4-1/2 bolt pattern is the most common one used, it is always a good idea to double check. This is pretty quick and easy as all you need to do is measure from the center of one bolt to the center of one right next to it. If you get 2-5/8", you are good to go. If you don't let me know and I can see what I can do. With that out of the way, the Kenda Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire with 13" Galvanized Wheel # AM3S160 is a wheel commonly used as a spare for boat trailers....

  • Correct Spare Wheel/Tire for PWC Trailer with 185/80-13 or 175/80-13 Tires
I recommend going with the the same size spare as what's used on the trailer currently. We have options for both 175/80-13 and 185/80-13. I recommend going with the Loadstar ST175/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S160 or Loadstar ST185/80D13 Bias Trailer Tire part # AM3S334. I am not quite sure why the manual list 185/80-13 for the wheel and 175/80-13 for the tire to be honest but so long as you go with the size currently on the trailer there will be no issues.

  • Trailer Tire and Wheel Recommendation for a 13 Inch Tire for Small Trailer Carrying a Sailboat
A lot of times what happens with trailer tires is that the trailer is not used often so the tires sit and can get dry rot. Then, when they are used, they might blow out or wear quickly and people might think it is the construction of the tire or the brand that is no good when in reality the tires were not properly maintained. Another issue is that sometimes people use vehicle tires not rated for the capacities typically handled by trailers instead of trailer tires. This can cause the...

You can certainly go with a taller tire, but you'll want to retain a bare minimum of 3 inches from the top of the tire to the inside of the fender or wheel well when the trailer is loaded so the tires don't rub. The speed rating on all special trailer tires (ST) is 65 miles per hour. It is not recommended to run a trailer tire at a higher speed than 65 miles per hour due to the heat buildup that will occur inside the tire and cause the tire to break down and cause the tire to fail. Special trailer (ST) tires should be inflated to the maximum air pressure that is stamped on the sidewall of the tire. It will be stamped with a designation of maximum load at a maximum psi. Radial tires are generally preferred over bias ply tires. A radial tire flexes more than a bias tire, giving it better ground contact, traction, stability, and tread wear. A radial tire will normally run cooler than a bias ply tire, especially when the tire is under a load. A tire that runs cooler will last longer. Best recommendation I can make would be the Lionshead tire part # LHWL101. This radial tire has a weight capacity of 1,360-lb max load at 50 psi, has a speed rating of 71...
