Video Transcript for Installing the RoadMaster 68" Single Hook, Coiled Safety Cables on your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee

Shane: Hi I'm Shane with etrailer.com. Today we're going to be taking a look at the Road master 68 inch coiled safety cables for your flat tow set up on your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee. This is going to be one of the five main components for a flat tow set up. These are going to be a secondary safety device in case your tow bar fails. The other four are going to be your tow bar, which is going to give you that solid connection point between your RV and your base plate on your towed vehicle or on your Jeep Grand Cherokee.Your wiring, which is going to allow your Jeep Grand Cherokee to receive light functions from your RV, so not only are you safe while you're flat towing your vehicle, but other drivers are safe because they're going to know what you're doing, whether you're braking, making a turn or driving at night.Braking system, which is going to be required in any vehicle that is flat towed. It's going to mount inside the vehicle and it's going to allow the Jeep Grand Cherokee to not only slow but stop itself so we're not overly 00:00:53 relying on the RV to slow and stop both vehicles. And then your base plate. Your base plate is going to attach to the chassis of the vehicle and it's going to give you a solid connection point for your tow bar.Now to go over a few more finer details on our safety cables.

Again these are going to be 68 or these are going to spread out to up 68 inches. We're going to have a quick link at one end. You can lock it right onto your tow bar or I'm sorry your hitch on your RV.Lock it into place. And you can just leave them connected. Once you disconnect this side from your vehicle, you hook it on to the other side and you can leave them connected on your RV if you want to.What we see is a lot of times because they're steel cables, if they're not coated they tend to rust.

The good thing about these, these are going to have a nice thick vinyl coating. So we're not going to have to worry about the weather corroding that steel cable over time. It's going to hold up really, really well. On this end, this is going to make an easy quick connection and disconnection from our base plate on our towed vehicle. We're going to have a locking tab here for a hook. It's going to be spring loaded. So we simply you know stick it over and it's going to lock into place right onto our safety chain loops.

One thing I do want to mention is when ordering safety cables you want to make sure that you're going to have enough room or you have enough length between your base plate and between the hitch on your RV.Depending on which tow bar you have some of them the arms may extend out a little bit longer. So you just want to make sure your cables are going to be long enough so that when you're turning corners and stuff like that you're not overstretching this cable.Again I'm Shane with etrailer.com. I hope this video's helped you whether you're still deciding or installing the Road master 68 inch safety cables on your 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Some things have changed in a year. My work schedule changed a lot and the 2014 Equinox that has everything mounted on it was traded for a 2018 Equinox Diesel. I went from 18-20mpg to 39-42mpg depending on if I was in AWD or not.

I know you can dinghy tow the Equinox Diesel and if we decide to do this I will be ordering Roadmaster equipment.

I am very pleased with etrailer, the service and getting what I need shipped in a timely manner. The Roadmaster items that I have received from etrailer worked out very well.

by:

Well, this is my 3rd review. These safety cables were part of my flat tow kit, all bought through etrailer. As I have said before, etrailer provides video installation guides that save you on Installations. Also their staff can help too. I have bought other items in the past and each self installation has saved a considerable sum of money overtime. You can't go wrong with etrailer

by:

I haven't installed anything yet, but shipping is very fast and the etrailer people are right on top of everything. Up to this point it seems like a great company to do business with!
Thank you

Roadmaster was real slow with the delivery of the seat adapter. But Michael kept me informed all the way through to the delivery. etrailer is 5 stars all the way from start to finish. I look forward to using them in my orders to follow.
Now for ROADMASTER products
RM-643 safety cables quality is good work fine Delivery was fast
RM-9160 brake master system Love this system instructions were easy to follow
RM-15267 toad tail light/brake wiring good instructions for install
RM-1550-1 base plate good instructions for install except you need to drill two 1/2'' holes you must measure and mark as there is no pilot hole.
The whole system works great with the 2008 Honda Pilot
RM-88189 seat adapter I have yet to install as I had to make up my own for the trip.
I will say the seat adapter bracket is made just for the Honda and Acura, they had to make custom make. Thanks to all the car towed great for my first trip of 1,100 miles

I ordered a Falcon II tow bar, Base plate for a GMC Canyon, Demco Stay-n-play braking system and safety cables. worked exactly as it should, directions were easy to follow. All hardware was included. This system allowed us to tow our Canyon 10K miles around the country. super easy to use and I was able to connect and disconnect in less than 5 min. I liked the system enough that I bought the same setup for our new vehicle.

by:

Another excellent Roadmaster product delivered by etrailer. Product is well made and very sturdy. I have not used it yet but am confident I will be very satisfied.

Installed on 2019 Jeep Trailhawk for Duo brake system so it was part of the completing that process that included the DUO. Installed Roadmaster Direct Connect base plate, Duo Brake systems to be used with Falcon All Terrain- The system has been great so far after one year in service.

The total install for everything probably took me 25-30 hours, working on it over several days. Removal of brand Jeep quarter panel and front end grill was a little nerve wreaking, but easy install on tow plates. The brake and electrical work used the other 60% of the time on this job.

I would consider myself to have intermediate skills for automotive repair activity. The slicing of the various electrical brake light system wires was a little challenging to due access in the front end and rear brake light housing. The video's from etrailer.com was very helpful in completing the process from start to finish ( although I had to watch it a number of times as I completed each portion of the install)

Note - The jeep brake light wiring will be connected to a plug in receptacle installed at the front of the jeep. Where the coil wire from the RV that plugs into this installed receptacle can become loose from plugging /unpluging the coil wire.
The pins can be pushed back thru that rubber housing easily if extreme caution isn't used each time and over time can loose contact with the coil connector. They should improve the plastic sheath that covers the backside of the pins in that receptacle so they cannot be pushed thru the back side.

etrailer is the best to work with, I needed a couple items after installing a baseplate, and they could not be more helpful! One call, easy order, quick ship. Thank you!

Safety cables are great, uncoil easily, and a winch to hook up. I can hook or unhook in less than 2 minutes. Good quality metals, no rust!

by:

After an unsuccessful and inaccurate description ended with me receiving the wrong product from Amazon, I order these cables from eTrailer. Perfect. Just what I wanted and for the right price. This completes my towing package for my "toad."

Ive made several trips with these cables and they still meet all my expectations. They connect and disconnect easily and store conveniently due to the fact they coil compactly. Theyve been a wise choice over time. More than worth the price.

by:

The safety cables have worked perfectly. The fact that they self coil makes them stay out of the way when installed and make them easy to store.

by:

I wont replace them anytime soon, but I wont get the same thing again. Having to pull against the coils in the to hook up the cables negates the fact that the tension keeps them off of the ground. It is at least as easy to put a few twists in a traditional chain and get the same results without the tug of war and extra expense. Beside that, my tow bar has channels on each arm that I could run a none coiled cable through if I wanted to go that route. With just a little more than 1,000 miles on them, there is already abrasion on the plastic coating. As I write this, I am thinking maybe I will return them - better check into the policy.

I needed safety cables to go with a Roadmaster Falcon All Terrain towbar that I purchased aftermarket. These work perfectly with my setup. The folks at etrailer.com are all knowledgeable and provide top advice when I need assistance. They are competitive on price and shipping is very prompt. They are my go-to source for all my towing needs.

I purchased a Blue Ox base plate, Air Force One braking system, and a light kit for my 2013 Durango. I could have not asked for an easier process with selecting and ordering, also the tutorials and videos were a great help in determining what was the best system for me . Everything arrived as planned and in great condition. This is not my first time using etrailer.com and my prior experience was equally good.

After using the items I reviewed, about 6,000 miles, I am more than satisfied. The towing setup is easy to hook up and unhook and the braking system is second to none. All of the installation was completed by myself and a friend, both of us have a technical background him more than me and we found the videos of the installation extremely helpful.Thank you for following up and providing excellent products as well as support services.

Great customer service

by:

Expected 6,000 pounds PER CABLE. Got 6000# for the pair or 3,000 per cable. Load is 4,200 so it might snap a cable if the load comes loose at an angle. Second cable could then snap and the load has come loose.

by:

As advertised, fast response, great price. Would buy from this seller in the future.

by:

Work great with the Roadmaster StowMaster tow bar.

by:

These will fit through the Roadmaster Tow Bar channels for tow cables when the ends are removed. Then ends go back on easily for final hookup. Long enough to work with a Roadmaster Falcon 3 Tow Bar at max turn left and right with 4 to 6 inches to spare. Easy to release the spring clip. I had to send back others that my wife could not handle due to too much tension. These are easy and make her happy...

  • Recommended Flat Towing Parts for a 2023 GMC Canyon
No, the tow hooks come off no matter what brand of base plate you use. This is extremely common amongst all trucks with flat towing set ups. That's a solid anchor point and attaching a base plate there hides it extremely well. You're going to want to stay away from the AT4X if you goal is to flat tow a 2023 GMC Canyon. None of the base plates work with that model. They make these trucks right next to our shop and the front ends on them look amazing but the base plates aren't compatible....

  • Why Disconnect Battery to Flat Tow Vehicle Behind Motorhome
GM states in the owner's manual that to recreationally tow the vehicle, the negative battery cable must be disconnected. The owner's manual doesn't list a specific reason, it only states that failure to do so could damage the vehicle. The fact that the key needs to be left in the Accessory position while towing so the steering wheel doesn't lock up gives me a pretty good idea that with the key in the ACC position, there must still be an electrical draw on the battery.
