Video Transcript for Roadmaster Flexo-Coil Kit Review

We're going to review the road master 7 wire to 6 wire flexi coil kit, part number RM-146-7. With this part number, this is what you get. This is our flexi coil cord right here. See it flexes out. This actually has a maximum length of 8 foot. This is our 7 pole connector here. The 7 pole is defined by the 6 slots here and the 7th pole in the center.

Very common design. This will fit a variety of different other manufactures aside from Road Master, as long as they have a 7 pole connector. The other end has a 6 pole connector, with the round pins. Again, a very common standard design. This end is designed to go into your RV. This end will go onto your towed vehicle.

It also comes with matching 6 pole connector to install on your towed vehicle. Let's flip our 6 pole connector over and take a look at the back side here. It does come with a rubber cover to help protect the contacts. The contacts are labeled, ground, left turn, right turn, S is usually for breaks, or it could be some other circuit, TM for running lights, our trailer marker lights, and we have an A for the pin in the center here for auxiliary. For trailers, these could be interchangeable for a hot lead or breaks. On our towed vehicle we really don't have to worry about that but it can be used for other accessories, such as supplemental breaking system on the vehicle for a monitor that goes up to the RV, or a simple charge line from the RV to the towed vehicle. Now the cord itself is actually created from heavy duty material and in fact is water, oil and chemical resistant. Although you can't see it, but on the inside of the plugs here, both plugs are filled with silicone on the inside to help protect the contacts. It does come with hardware to take your 6 pole and attach it to the bracket, here and here.

When you mount this to your vehicle, if you need to, in some applications you don't have to, you do have to get some extra hardware to mount this to your vehicle. Next we'll go ahead and put this on a typical application on a towed vehicle and we'll cover some of the basics of the wiring that needs to go inside here. Now, on a typical install for a 6 pole connector, it does not matter what vehicle you're putting this on. What does matter is that you want to have the basic circuits ready for your lights in the back of your vehicle when it's towed behind the RV. In this case we just have 4. We have white for ground, brown for running light circuit, yellow for a left turning break and green for a right turning break. This is a standard code right here, so if you're vehicle is wired up to code, you'll be good to go. Let's start off with the install of the 6 pole, you simply take the cover, it goes on the back and run it up on the wires.

May even put a kink in the wire to keep it from falling back down as you work on it, if you're working on the bottom like we are. Then you'll attach your wires to the 6 pole contacts. You want to have your wires stripped back about a quarter inch or so and you'll want a . This little flat head screw driver. I'm actually using a number 1 size screw driver and we'll just install the wires one at a time. Remember, they're labelled GD for ground, and that's going to be white. Make sure your wires are twisted together to make sure it's tight and all you do is slip your wires in and tighten down the screw. Don't have to crush this wire. Just make sure it's secure. Basically it's just a matter of matching up your circuits for the rest of the way around. We'll go ahead and do that next. Now that all our basic connections are made, what I suggest next is actually taking a few moments and wrapping that contacts up with some electrical tape and then slide our cover back onto place. At this point you can probably plug this up with some silicone like the rest of the kit has, or it could simply use some electrical tape and wrap it around the end to protect it. I suggest that. Since we have two extra pins leftover we have room for an easy upgrade. Now for our application in this vehicle, we already have a bracket set up to hold our 6 pole connector, so we don't have to use the one that comes with it. If we didn't have it, we could probably use it in this location right here. Again, this hardware came with the base plate, not with the 6 pole connector or the cord. Okay, it's installed together. This key on top here, this is the top, your screw always goes down towards the bottom. Line up the key with the one on the top on the 6 pole and just push in. If you notice this edge of the cap here will hook to the edge of our 6 pole connector, and help locking it into place and keep it from falling out. Let's go ahead and work with our 7 pole end at our RV here. Just like the other one it has a key that it goes into. Push it in and make sure the lid catches on it and snaps into place. As you can see here, our RV and our our towed vehicle are probably just right at 8 foot apart. We have plenty of leftover and that's a good thing too. In some situations when you use a high low adapter for your tow bar, it will actually push the tow bar and the towed vehicle out maybe a foot or so, depending on the configuration you use. In this case, we have more of enough cord to accomplish that and make any room for upgrades. With that, that will finish it for our look at the Road Master 7 wire to 6 wire flexi coil kit, part number RM-146-7.

Product Review: This is my second set of this kit. Setting up another TOAD. Very easy to install. Nice screw terminals with big enough holes for appropriate cable gauges. Everything you need is included. Even nuts/bolts. Yes, I could have just ordered the receptacle for my second TOAD, but having a second cable as a spare is not such a bad idea ;) Site Review: E-trailer is super easy to navigate. Easy to check out via CC or paypal...and you get follow up emails. No chasing after tracking numbers or order status' ... All diagrams and product data is available. If it isn't they'll get it for you ASAP. Top notch service IMO.

The wire connector looks good so far (just got it). This is a replacement for another connector that I broke. I'm buying Roadmaster because I have had such good quality and service from them on other parts. I'm sticking with Roadmaster.

The connector did not want to plug into the towed vehicle receiver. After an hour or so of trying I was finally able to make it work by squeezing each pin together to make them a bit smaller so the go into the receiver.

The 7 to 6 coiled cable from etrailer.com came the next day and is exactly as described. After having ordered the same item from another professional online hitch-seller in Texas, paying for the item, and waiting 3 weeks without even a thank you for your order or status of the order, I finally had to call and leave a voicemail, then call back the next day to find out the order might ship on Friday. Needless to say I cancelled the order and called and spoke to Jan at etrailer.com who handled my order and verified each item was in stock and would ship the next day. Boy was I surprised when the driver delivered my package at noon the next day. A real Professional company. Buy with confidence.

I recommend using the Roadmaster 7-Wire to 6-Wire Flexo-Coil Kit # RM-146-7, simply cut off your current 4-Way and rewire with the 6-Way to provide the charge line for your towed using the Battery Charge Line Kit # RM-156-25. The Kit allows up to 15 amps from your RV's battery to be used to maintain the charge of your towed car's battery while the car is being towed. This Includes 14-guage wire, split wire loom, circuit breaker, and hardware. The kit is made in the USA.
