Video Transcript for Brophy RV and Camper Steps - Truck Camper - AS02 Review

Today we're going to be taking a look at the Brophy aluminum, scissor steps. These steps are going to attach to your RV for easier access. These are not just intended for RV use, they can be applied to many different applications. Nice, lightweight construction, they're manufactured from a heavy gauge aluminum construction for maximum strength and durability. The stairs are designed to self-adjust to the terrain and they're also going to be able to fold for compact and easy storage. Now, the unit's going to come fully assembled, very easy to install and to use. It's going to come with your detailed installation instructions, so those are included.

It's a universal mount design. On the actual step surface or platform, it's going to have that diamond tread design, that's going to provide additional traction which is going to help increase safety and sure footing. Your trailer mounting bracket is included, it's going to be this piece right here. This would mount to your application and it's going to provide the holes right here which would accept the upper bar right here. The upper bar of the steps would engage inside these hooks and that's what would hold the unit in place when you're ready to use it. Really nice design, it's also going to come with your mounting hardware, so bracket and hardware are included. The hardware right here, it's going to come with 4, quarter inch by inch and a half long lag screws.

Now, a separate mounting bracket is required if attaching this to a pickup tailgate, sold separately and can be found here at etrailer.com, by part number TSSB. The overall length of the unit from edge to edge, right here, of the bracket, this is going to give us a measurement of 18 and 1 quarter inches long. Then the mount holes on the unit are separated on center by 5 and a quarter inches. The product's made right here in the USA, as you can see it's a nice 2 step design. The extended vertical height is 18 to 23 inches high, so if the height of your mounting area where a step is needed, excuse me, is between those measurements then this would be a great choice for you. When it's fully retracted or compressed it's going to measure about 7 inches tall. Taking a look at that actual step size real quick, measuring edge to edge going this direction.

It's going to give us a measurement of about 17 inches. Front to back it's going to give us a step depth of pretty close to 6 and a half inches deep. Now when it comes to the drop or rise that's simply measuring the distance between the platforms of the steps. It's going to give us a drop and rise of about 7 and a half inches. The unit is going to feature a weight capacity of 250 pounds, it's really easy to move to a stowed position as well. I'm just going to remove my support right here.

I'll show you how it folds. What you would do is you would take the step and you would simply just remove it from the mount, from that included bracket, just raise that bar up. It can be removed from the mount, it does rotate for easy installation and removal and then all you have to do is compress the steps together and on the back it's going to have a bracket with a latching mechanism. That's going to engage and that's going too keep the steps in the folded position. That's going to do it for today's look at the Brophy aluminum, scissor steps.

Summary: Excellent quality. Purchased for weight saving (60 lbs) and reduced drag (1 sq. ft. side of steps supplied with trailer {large wind drag} eliminated). Our GMC Acadia and KZ Escape car/trailer combination is weight and horsepower sensitive, but my wife didn't want to drive a "growly" diesel truck for daily trips. The GMC is 5000 lb towing max with a 6 cyl gas engine. We were a bit surprised by the 80 lb. steel steps which came with the trailer and I noticed that the side facing the headwind was a square foot in area which was probably causing significant drag. So we purchased the etrailer steps. They are 12 pounds and have no wind resistance. With these steps we have noticed better speed response and better hill climbing. Note: I should have purchased the 3 step unit instead of the 2 step unit. I failed to account for non-level campsites which can increase the total step height required when the trailer is leveled (ground/front/low). So notice in the photo, I changed the mounting, placing the "on trailer" bracket on the bottom of the trailer, and putting screws into the stair tops to eliminate the stair top swivel. Overall: I highly recommend. Don't discount the weight and drag of the "standard" trailer steps. 468703

Thanks for the great communication. I did receive the product as described. I actually used this product on my Tacoma truck. I have parents that are old and they need stairs to get into my truck. I tried folding plastic steps but didn't work that well. Not too sturdy. I finally found your product that I thought would work for my use. I thought I needed the different types of mounting bracket, but didn't need it. I just riveted the top arm hinge and rested the top of stair arm on the truck side runners. I also riveted a neoprene pad on the bottom leg to help stabilize the bottom from slipping. It works great for what I needed it to do. Here are some pictures. 122537

How did this set of stairs fold up and store? On this truck it looks like they would be sticking out in folded position, if the door was closed.I need this for my Class C RV. Its not very high off the ground and 1 or 2 steps should do it. I have to measure it when I get back home. My assumption is that they would fold up and store underneath the RV like the present dented steel ones are storing or stored before they dented up.Please add some measurements of height when folded up.Thanks!

This particular set does not permanently hang underneath the RV. There is a bracket that attaches to the frame of the RV. When you arrive at the campsite, you pull out the stairs, unfold and set them into the bracket. When it's time to go, you remove the steps, fold them up and store them in the RV. The steps that stay underneath are Pull-Out and Electric Steps. I have added links to these categories below.

I received the steps yesterday and installed this morning (took less than an hour) on our 2019 Rockwood 2503S (back door). I like the steps, especially the fact that they can be removed while traveling. Our previous steps were badly damage when we hit a "humped" railroad crossing. I do have a few comments though: 1. The two step unit is only available in 18" wide. A 24" wide unit would have worked much better for us. 2. Lag bolts are provided for screwing the mounting bracket to the space below the door. The way travel trailers are built nowadays, I seriously doubt if there is anything there to screw into. I mounted a piece of 2x2 aluminum angle to the frame below the door (used the mounting bolts from the original steps) then bolted the step support bracket to that using four 1/4"x1" bolts, flat washers and locknuts. 3. As other reviewers have noted, the edges of the steps themselves a quite sharp. A little filing/sanding wouldn't be amiss. 642947

These steps are great, and were delivered in 2 days. can't ask for much more than that! Needed these for when my pickup camper is off the truck and lowered all the way down. Very sturdy and well made 564846

- AS02

The screws that come with the steps and that are supposed to fit into a 5/32" hole in the frame did not fit. The first screw broke in two while screwed into the pre-drilled 5/32" hole, according to the instructions. Even, a larger hole, 3/16", did not accommodate the screws. Ultimately I decided to drill 1/4" holes and fit machine screws with nylon hex jam nuts. The ideal position for the step support bracket was impossible to use as frame bolts were in its place. The Camper that the steps went on is a Winnebago Minnie Drop, factory equipped with a one step ladder that is too high for us, so we opted for this two step ladder. Finally I got it all to fit but it took much effort and some creativity. The steps are fine but the attachment to the camper leaves much to be desired. 538655

I won’t be able to put this on my camper until it thaws out in April....but it is a great product as we had an identical one on our last truck camper and it was fantastic, convenient, easy to handle and sturdy. We could just pop it on and off as needed. I took the factory supplied step arrangement off our new Lance and will install this instead. It is soooo much better. 476516

Knocked the steel stairs under our truck camper off twice driving on rough terrain, then bought these stairs; they don’t hang down, 10x lighter, and don’t rust. I will never use steel stairs again. They install in less than 10 min and work great. 451673

We ordered the bracket with three aluminum stairs for our Teardrop Camper. They came quickly and were exactly as we needed and had been shown on the website. But our bracket was slightly bent and we feared that the "wiggle' was a little too much. We emailed trainer and got a reply within the same day. The customer service was EXCELLENT! Everyone that handled our return and resend was professional, prompt and totally understanding. No questions asked. I would certainly buy from them again in the future. 408981

We love the stairs. Haven’t taken the camper out much due to some other things happening but would recommend them to anyone interested in a removable stair for a camper. Best set up, we think. Your site was great and we appreciated your help.

These steps worked very well in my application. Needed 2 steps to get into the boat from the dock and found these steps to be very stable. Purchase a extra mounting bracket, so the steps can be mounted on either side of the boat, depending which side the dock is on. The steps also close down when not in use, so the can be stored out of the way when not needed. The mounting bracket is very strong and will hold the steps from moving. The only reason I didn't give them a excellent rating is because the lower edge of the aluminum steps were left very sharp and should have been filed or rounded off from the factory. I was made awake of this from another review and was prepared to file the sharp edge round. The manufactures should read these reviews and address these concerns. 186847

I got the aluminum steps and am very happy with them. They are well made, fold up small and are light weight. I mounted mine offset to the left side of the door so I would still have access to the end of the counter top from outside. Oh, and the free shiping was super fast!! 151572

The product is excellent but my review is slightly poor. It is a good step, strong and well built but, the corners and edges are razor sharp and will cut your toes wide open if you are barefoot and touch one of them. I know, I did it and opened up the top of my big toe. I removed the step and spent the next hour or so filing down all the sharp edges and now all is good. 136490

The folding stairs are much better than the attached steps that came with mycamper. I did have to fabricate a bracket under the camper to attach themto that could be a little to hard for most people to do. Other than thatthey are excellent steps.

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

Steps are better than we thought they would be. The original steps were short and narrow and as we have gotten older not very sturdy. These are very sturdy and actually fit the original mounting bar. Should have gotten these a long time ago. We would highly recommend them for back entry truck campers. 84438

I HAD THIS SAME STEP UNTIL SOMEBODY BROKE INTO THE CAMPER AND STOLE IT ALONG WITH SOME OTHER ITEMS. IT WAS ABOUT 12 YEARS OLD WHEN THE ANTI SKID STARTED TO WEAR OFF AND I WAS AMAZED AT HOW LONG IT LASTED AND WAS STILL STRUCTURALLY SOUND. THAT'S WHY I BOUGHT ANOTHER ONE. HOPING THIS ONE LASTS AS LONG AND IF I GET TO KEEP IT I'LL PUT CARPET ON THE STEPS WHEN THE ANTI SKID WEARS OFF. THE DOGS CAN GET UP AND DOWN JUST FINE. THE SERVICE AT ETRAILER IS QUICK AND EASY. I'VE ORDERED FROM THEM BEFORE AND NEVER A PROBLEM, QUICK DELIVERY AND QUALITY PRODUCTS. 482321

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

We bought these steps for our newly acquired 1991 Palomino truck camper. We did have to do a bit of re-designing on the bracket to attach them to the camper, but we did it and they fit perfectly on our camper and we are very happy to have found them and after asking about the number of steps, and receiving an answer from etrailer, we ordered the 4 step ones and are very happy with them, they are exactly the right size and walking up them makes it so much easier than trying to use a ladder. We used the original bracket to attach them to the camper, we just had to use more bolts as our camper isn't made with the wood that newer ones are, ours just has a lot of OSB wood that makes up the sides etc. We are very happy with our steps, and hope to use them often. 363026

I have been using this trailer step for over a year. It is fabulous. I decided on this model because the stairs are deeper making it easier and safer for myself, family members as well as my old dog to get in and out of the camper. I am able to use my single folding step during travel, placing the scissor step on without conflict. I highly recommend the step to anyone who has a camper. 416632

I could not find a product specifically made for my application, but these steps were a very close fit. I little cutting here some drilling there and what do you know, steps 'custom made' for a 1999 Roadtrek 190P. Now anyone with mobility issues can enter the camper easily. You cannot see it in the picture, but there are blocks under the top step that are pinned to the campers step, it is a very solid connection and will not pull out accidentally. Also not visible there are commercial handicapped grab bars on both doors as well as on the left hand 'wall' of the bathroom. With the addition of these steps the camper is now easily accessible for my wife. 334568

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

The Brophy Aluminum Four Step Scissors steps appear to be an excellent product and installed easily. I like the mounting bracket - the bracket provides for easy attachment and removal as well as slight sliding of the steps to either side. The steps provide secure footing even when wet. And they are relatively light weight and compact when retracted and detached prior to movement. The watch outs are: 1. The lower, forward edge of each step could cause cuts. 2. The metal strap used to secure the steps in the collapsed/storage position also posed a potential cut issue when installed on my Lance 1050s. The uppermost step rests on my Lance's bumper. The strap must be rotated up parallel to the uppermost step. The edge of the strap then protrudes slightly above the back edge of the uppermost step. We removed the strap and I will bevel the lower forward edge of the steps. All that said, a good product that I highly recommend. I wish I had bought them two years ago when we got the camper. Our camper spends most of its time mounted on the truck, and the climb up is a nuisance. These steps make entry and exit a snap. Of course etrailer's service is outstanding. I received my order quickly - the third business day after placing my order. I have ordered three large items from etTrailer and have received all three expeditiously and without damage/incident. These guys are pro's. Joe 417080

I live on the beach in north Florida and lost part of my dune walkover, including the stairs to the beach, to Hurricane Matthew last October. While awaiting repairs I purchased these RV stairs to use temporarily. They worked great, and I continue to use them even after repairs! Great product. Thank you!! 401144

Stairs are still great however the fasteners are very rusted. Would be great if you supplied stainless steel fasteners. Additional cost could not be much, and I would have paid for that option if it had been available.

I have spoken with my contacts at Brophy and they do not offer a kit with additional installation hardware other than attaching the mounting bracket securely to your camper, and stainless steel hardware would be great, you can get that hardware locally.

Nicely made, I have fabricated many items including tilt bed trailers and I think this is well made, the only reason I gave it 4 stars is because they need to do do more research on different applications, this camper only had fiberglass and foam in the mount area because of the insulated basement, I through bolted it with a plate on the back for washers, and added self locking nuts. I included a picture of the camper in my home shop. 445950

2014 SILVERADO WITH A 2014 NORTHSTAR POP UP CAMPER . 3 STEP MODEL WOULD HAVE BEEN BETTER BUT THIS WILL WORK . THESE ARE VERY STURDY AND RAPID TO ATTACH AND DETATCH . VERY PLEASED SOON TO UPLOAD PHOTOS OF THE 4 STEP AFFIXED . ENTIRE PACKAGE WAS A PERFECT MATCH . THE STEPS WORK WELL , HOWEVER ON MY NORTHSTAR CAMPER THE SPACE ON THE FIBERGLASS BETWEEN DOOR BOTTOM AND CAMPER BOTTOM ( 1" ) IS TOO NARROW FOR THE BRACKET ATTACHMENT . SO A SLIGHT MODIFICATION ACCOMPLISHED THE TASK . MY ONLY REGRET IS THAT I HAD PURCHASED THE THREE STEP STAIR VS THIS FOUR STEP VERSION . ANGLE A BIT LAYBACK BUT MAYBE ONLY I WOULD NOTICE IT . YOU JUDGE . GREAT , STURDY SAFE AND FAST ASSEMBLY UNIT . THANKS 121171

15 min to install. Stupid heavy duty. Ease of access into the fifth wheel is significantly better. Mounting bracket all steel in this case as well as the hanger bar on the steps. There is no engineering or structural issues. Very solid. My ONLY complaint; I did receive a rather nasty cut due to sharp edges. If a loved one os to deploy thes steps it is highly advisable to locate any sharp edges before puting this in service. A little quality control in this area is advisable. Otherwise these sleps will serve a lifetime if taken care of. Great product. Well designed. 558048

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

I bought these steps because my wife had trouble getting into our 4wd pop up camper. The door is at the rear of the camper, mounted on a Ford F-150. I myself did not want the steps because I thought they would add weight, bulk while traveling, and hassle. I was unable to use the mounting bracket supplied. If I were to mount the bracket to the back of the camper, it would be too high, and also leave a gap between the camper and the top step. I solved the problem by mounting a flat aluminum step across the bumper, and then on top of that bolting on two plywood boards with a gap just big enough to take the top aluminum bar of the steps. The steps fit onto this perfectly. In use, I now like these steps a lot. They are VERY solid and secure - much more than any other option, such as the plastic folding stepstool I used before. Since the steps are securely attached to the truck, and also resting securely on the ground, it makes for a VERY stable and secure step. When traveling it is very easy to fold them up and put them into the back of the camper. They are the first thing unpacked, and the last thing packed. Yet it does add weight and takes up room, but in my opinion it is well worth it. 472746

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

Purchased these to use on our Jumping Jack Blackout Trailer. Didn't want to drill directly into the trailer, so my Husband devised a creative way to use it. Will be using it camping this weekend for the first time. So far love the extra room of the 24". They feel sturdy & it feels natural (It's nice to not have to think about how or where you are placing your feet) walking on them- like real stairs... 435288

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

I purchased this item as an alternative to the factory steps. There are products out there that are similar that actually take the place of the factory step, which leave you having to store the factory step. If you were to upgrade to a newer or different rig, you would either swap steps, or let the new set go with the old rig and then have to dispose the old set. This system keeps the original steps in place and is portable. In fact, we recently purchased a new trailer and the steps came with us and work perfectly. I couldn't be more pleased. 410761

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

Steps were as advertised. Well made, sturdy, quality construction. I choose not to mount the steps on the door wall, as there would be a large (5 1/2") gap from the camper to the first step (others have commented on this). I was able to mount under the camper, on a filler platform I have to use to get my camper above the truck bed sidewalls. This made the gap less by a few inches. One size does not fit "all", as the steps are out of level (mine are mounted at 32"). Perhaps the 3-step configuration would have been a better fit. I am considering modifying the bottom riser, cutting 3 inches off to better level the steps. Non the less, a great product, I would buy them again. 152149

Review from a similar Brophy Aluminum Scissor in RV and Camper Steps

steps are great, my door bottom of cabover is over 3 feet off the ground when on my 05 gmc dually. they make going in and out a easy and safe especially with grand kids going up and down them. the only thing i did not like and why i did not rate them as excellent is the mounting bracket is very poor. an aluminum bar with 2" straps welded at an angle to hold the top off step on. when first mounted and stepped on it flexed more than i was safe with-i weigh 240 lbs. so i added a 1" square tube under the top part of the steps bar coming off the camper to support the arm that sits in the mount tabs. now i can go in and out loading stuff carrying 50 pounds of stuff and no flex. they seem very rigid when extended all the way out ,with very little flex on each step. remember take into consideration when buying them that the weight load needs to handle you and what you carry up steps. i would buy them again for another camper when needed. 233977

  • Steps for a Low Entry Height of Less than 21-1/2 inches On a 2017 Grand Design 29RS
  • For such a low "entry height" you will actually need to use scissor steps such as # AS02 since there isn't a SolidStep option that will work. These scissor steps will work with an entry height of 18 to 23 inches. I have included a link to a video review for you to take a look at so you can determine if this type of step will work for you.

  • Recommended Step for 2015 Minnie Winne 31K
  • For your 2015 Minne Winne 31K, I recommend the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps - 2 Steps - Aluminum - Diamond Tread - 18" Wide - 250 lbs # AS02. These steps make it easy to remove when not in use and keep all your ground clearance for driving. Another option is to use the Safety Step Adjustable Height, Folding Platform Step - Aluminum - 24" x 16" - 1,000 lbs # SASXLA-09C-G which gives you adjustability for uneven ground and foldable legs. The legs collapse for a storage height of 4 inches....

  • Will Brophy Aluminum Scissor Steps, # AS24, Work On Boat Trailer
  • The Brophy Aluminum Scissor Steps, # AS24, fully extended is 39 inches tall and can be slightly compressed to 31 inches. If you are mounting the bracket to your boat trailer, you should measure from where the bracket will mount on the trailer down to the ground to see if these dimensions will work. If after you measure, you need a different size we do have other sizes available in the scissor steps. The Brophy, # AS02, has a extended height of 18 inches to 23 inches, the Brophy, # AS23,...

  • Recommended Scissor Steps for Varying Distance From Door to Ground
  • I took a look at each of the scissor steps we carry and there are not any available that have the range of 18" to 26" you are looking for. You are not going to want to use the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS23, which have a range of 24" to 30" when your door is 18" off the ground so your best option would be to use both the # AS23 steps as well as the Brophy # AS02 which have a height range of 18" to 23". I've added a link to video reviews of both steps for you to take a look at.

  • Replacement 2-Step Stair Assembly for Allegro RV
  • We offer many types and sizes of RV pull-out steps. Most of the OEM steps installed by RV makers are standard off-the-shelf items that are easily replaced but given the RV's age you may need to select an alternate step and drill some new mounting holes. The linked page displays all 2-step stair assemblies. Do note that some, such as Brophy # AS02 and # SS02, are NOT meant for permanent installation. These steps use a bracket that holds the step when you are at your destination but they...

  • Why are Brophy Aluminum Scissor Steps # AS23 Not Suitable for Permanent Installation
  • Brophy does not recommend their Aluminum Scissor Steps # AS23 for permanent installation due to their height when retracted. Even when fully retracted the steps will have a height of 10-1/2-inches which could present a hazard. Their other steps that you referenced, part # AS02, extend down only 7-inches when retracted. Also, the # AS23 Aluminum Scissor Steps have nothing to hold them in place while travelling.

  • Do the Aluminum 2-Step Scissor Steps Come with a Mounting Bracket
  • The mounting bracket is built into the aluminum scissor steps # AS02 so you would not need to purchase a separate bracket. It also includes the mounting hardware.
