Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

Decent steps while camper is on the truck. There made for a certain height so when lowering the camper down they don’t work.

Seems most attachments for campers are made for the typical 4” tube bumper. Ours has the step style which the hook/bar that attaches the steps to the camper don’t fit. We added/welded a piece on each side so it would fit properly when loaded on the truck.

I want to thank etrailer customer service for their help when our steps was lost. I contacted them after it was (said) delivered they did an investigation and replaced them in a week. Thanks

it seems that the top step does not hole up like the other two.

I got the three step last year and I haven’t used it because it’s not big enough. I really need to turn in the three step for a four step if that’s possible. I will pay the difference. Please get a hold of me.

I would love to accommodate you on an exchange r return, it would be too far past our 60 day return policy. We do have the 4 step available as part # AS04.

I still have the steps I have not used the steps. I have three steps. I needed four steps. I tried to return it and pay the difference for a four step. They wouldn’t let me do that either. Not happy with the company they should’ve worked with me and they didn’t.

I had a three step foldable ladder I was using to get in/ out of my trick camper. Getting in was easy but getting out was very unstable. These foldable steps make a great improvement! Install wasn't hard and stowing them away in my truck is great as they take up very little space!

The 3 step aluminum stairs work perfect.
2 step was too short for my need.

Works Great at a great price

My husband built a truck camper, lighter than commercial, to serve our back road adventures. He considered several options for steps and came upon your scissor steps! He ordered, they arrived in just a few days and was pleased with the ease of attaching, folding and sturdiness of the steps. Thank you for a great product.

I ordered these steps for our travel trailer. They shipped the same day I ordered them and arrived on time. Super easy to install. They are VERY sturdy and the distance between the steps is perfect. It was always a stretch to use the steps that came with the trailer and a bit clanky. These are a great replacement.

I purchased this product for other than it’s intended use and it worked out perfectly. A breath of fresh air to receive a top quality, American made product. Thank you for the craftsmanship and quality of materials. After seeing the quality of this product and finding how well it suits me need, I only wish I would have ordered the wider set. Hat’s off to etrailer!! Buy American and from this company, you will not be disappointed!!

We have used the heck out of ours for a year now. Constantly up and down with somewhat heavy loads ours has been a lifesaver for us. It's just as sturdy as the day we got it. We have not spent one minute doing any maintenance or cleaning on it. With the quality of craftsmanship I would expect to pay a lot more. Definitely a great buy.

Extremely satisfied with service from retailer. Have attached step bracket to truck body. Well made set of steps. Very pleased with outcome of attachment to my 2007 Ram. Did smooth some rough areas of step with file. Again very satisfied with steps and strainer service.

Stairs installed see attachment. Only have one suggestion so additional customers don't require a additional spacer. My camper is a 2005 and I had to add a 1/4 thick spacer between the camper shell and the stair upper bracket because of the entry door lower sill but besides that everything worked out great. Thanks

High quality materials. Supports your weight without bending. A little stiff to unfold but does slightly loosen over time, but not to the point of slop.

Steps are very sturdy, easy to attach to the camper. The bright finish is nice on the steps but when the sun is directly overhead there is a bright glare from the steps. Matt finish might be better.

Very nice and lightweight steps.

It works fine! just what we needed, went on very easy, had to notch the bottom of door to clear, and that's OK. we have not went camping yet. so the photos are at home. hope this helps, If not let me know!! We want to out camping anyway..

Very light weight yet extremely sturdy steps perfect for our application on our camper.

Hello Rachael, Everything is fine, camper steps are great. extremely glad I found your company to purchase them.

Stairs fit my application just right to land from the camper to a platform on the trailer ... this is my second one, lost the first one in a moment of carelessness. It's well made and after a year of use, camping every week in the summer, it's not at all loose.

Etrailer seems to have everything related to trailers

Works just like we needed ..
GREAT product,
fair price.

Couldnt ask for a better purchase in any way. Extremely high quality steps, and shipped faster then I expected. Installation on my truck camper took less then 5 minutes. Would highly recommend not only the steps, but!
Thanks again,

Everything is fine, camper steps are great. extremely glad I found your company to purchase them. Thanks,

Product works well for me, it fit on my existing hardware, it accommodates various trailer angles and elevations when connected to the flatbed trailer for access to my truck camper (it is removed when driving).

Arrived on time and as expected. Super high quality. I am sure they will last longer than our camper.

Aluminum steps have been a great addition to my truck camper. Light weight to handle yet sturdy and easy to mount on camper.

Easy to order from the website, paid with PayPal and was kept informed on shipping and tracking.

  • Are the Steel Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # SS03 Available in Aluminum
We do have the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # SS03 in aluminum. This is found on our site as part # AS03. Please note that the aluminum version has a weight capacity of 250 lbs as opposed to the 300 lbs of capacity that the steel version has. If you would like to add some more stability to these steps then the handrail # AHR3 can be used. The manufacturer specifically states that these steps should not be mounted permanently. You really should remove them before you start traveling.

Depending on where you wanted to mount the Aluminum Scissor Steps, # AS03, you would use the included mounting bracket, which you can see in the fourth picture on the product page. Click on it to enlarge the picture. The bracket attaches to your chosen mounting location using the 4 screws that are included. You can see them in the last picture. • Recommended Scissor Steps for a Pickup Truck Camper With Tailgate Height of 23-24 inches
The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS03 is what I would go with if I were in your shoes. If you are needing a height of at least 24 inches then it is better to get steps that can extend past your minimum height requirement in case you need a little more height. The Tailgate Scissor Step Bracket # TSSB by Brophy is what you are going to need so that you can install the Scissor Steps on your tailgate.

  • Can Brophy Steel Scissor Steps Rust
The Brophy scissor steps # SS03 are steel with a black powder coat. Steel can rust if it is exposed to the elements. Eventually the powder coat can get chips or scratches in it exposing the steel and then it can start to rust. If you notice scratches or chips you can spray paint over them to help prevent corrosion. Another option is to go with the aluminum version, # AS03. Aluminum is naturally corrosion resistant and will not rust like steel. I have linked a video review of the aluminum...

The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS03 do retract to make them easier to haul around but these steps do have to be removed from the mounting bracket for travel. • Scissor Step for Trailer with 24 inches of Height and Lower Rise Between Steps
I wish we had something as we get this request a lot but all of the scissor step kits out there like the Brophy Scissor Steps part # AS03 have a higher amount of rise between the steps at around 8 inches like this one. Now with that said since this step set has a range of 24 inch to 30 inch and your height is 24 inches there's a good chance this would actually have a slightly lower rise between steps.
