Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

31" - 40"AS04, SS04AS24
40" - 48"AS05AS25

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

  • Recommended 3 Step Brophy Camper Scissor Steps for a 2022 Winnebago Spirit Motorhome
Yes they do, Christine, what you're looking for is the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS03.

  • Scissor Step for Trailer with 24 inches of Height and Lower Rise Between Steps
I wish we had something as we get this request a lot but all of the scissor step kits out there like the Brophy Scissor Steps part # AS03 have a higher amount of rise between the steps at around 8 inches like this one. Now with that said since this step set has a range of 24 inch to 30 inch and your height is 24 inches there's a good chance this would actually have a slightly lower rise between steps.

  • Could Brophy Scissor Steps part # AS03 Attach to Top of Tailgate
The mounting bracket for the Brophy Scissor Steps part # AS03 could certainly be attached to the top of a truck tailgate with the included hardware but it's hard to say if your tailgate would be rated for the weight of people walking up and down on the steps.

  • Can The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS03 Fold Up For Travel
The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS03 do retract to make them easier to haul around but these steps do have to be removed from the mounting bracket for travel. These steps are designed for use on truck bed campers and wouldn't really be the best option for a motorhome. Instead I recommend going with some fold down steps like the MORryde Quick Connect RV Steps # MR32JR. To determine which exact model will fit your motorhome you'll need to measure your entry height (from the ground to...

  • Recommended Scissor Steps for a Pickup Truck Camper With Tailgate Height of 23-24 inches
The Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # AS03 is what I would go with if I were in your shoes. If you are needing a height of at least 24 inches then it is better to get steps that can extend past your minimum height requirement in case you need a little more height. The Tailgate Scissor Step Bracket # TSSB by Brophy is what you are going to need so that you can install the Scissor Steps on your tailgate.

  • Can Brophy Steel Scissor Steps Rust
The Brophy scissor steps # SS03 are steel with a black powder coat. Steel can rust if it is exposed to the elements. Eventually the powder coat can get chips or scratches in it exposing the steel and then it can start to rust. If you notice scratches or chips you can spray paint over them to help prevent corrosion. Another option is to go with the aluminum version, # AS03. Aluminum is naturally corrosion resistant and will not rust like steel. I have linked a video review of the aluminum...

  • Are the Steel Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # SS03 Available in Aluminum
We do have the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # SS03 in aluminum. This is found on our site as part # AS03. If you would like to add some more stability to these steps then the handrail # AHR3 can be used. The manufacturer specifically states that these steps should not be mounted permanently. You really should remove them before you start traveling.
