Will Brophy Camper Scissor Steps Work for You?

Scissor steps are typically installed on truck campers, but can be attached to your truck's tailgate using a special mounting bracket (TSSB - sold separately). After the initial installation, they're easy to attach when needed and detach for compact storage. To ensure you choose the correct size for your application, there are a few measurements you will need to take.

Brophy Mounting Bracket

The Brophy scissor steps have a single mounting bracket that attaches to either the camper wall or the truck bumper beneath the doorway. To decide which size you'll need, locate the space available for the mounting bracket on your application that lines up with the doorframe, and measure the width and height. You will need a mounting space at least 18-1/4" wide and 1" tall.

If it turns out you have more space beneath your doorway, there are larger step assemblies available with 24" wide brackets. A full list of the available steps is below.

Once you have an approximation of where the mounting bracket will go and what size mounting bracket you need, the spot you chose will be used as the "mounting point" to determine how many steps you will need.

How Many Steps Do You Need?

Brophy Entry Height

To decide on how many steps you'll need, measure from the "mounting point" to the ground. This is called the entry height. The entry height should roughly match the height of the steps when they're fully extended, and it will also tell you how many steps you need.

The chart below displays entry height measurement ranges in the first column. If you determined you need an 18-1/4" mounting bracket, the step part numbers with that width are in the second column. If you determined you need a 24" mounting bracket width, the step part numbers with that width are in the third column. Choose the bracket size that is closest to your measurements without going over.

This page's step assembly is in bold text.

40" - 48"AS05AS25

How Do You Install the Steps?

To install the steps:

  1. Find the mounting spot for the bracket on your vehicle
  2. Unfold the steps and attach to the mounting bracket "V" clamps
  3. Place step assembly against camper or bumper

-Make sure assembly is centered beneath the doorway

  4. Mark the mounting holes on the camper and drill
  5. Remove steps from bracket and set aside
  6. Attach the mounting bracket to the camper

-Secure in place with included lag screws

  7. Hook stairs into mounting bracket "V" clamps and extend

  • Recommended Permanently Mounted 4 Step Scissor Steps For Camper
I may have another option but unfortunately the Brophy Camper Scissor Steps # SS04 you have were not designed to be permanately installed and will not work with the TorkLift GlowStep Stow N' Go Mounting Bracket # TLA7820 you mentioned. The Brophy # SS04 was designed to be removed when traveling, and only installed onto the camper when needed. The only option I can offer that would give you a permanently mounted option on your camper would be to use steps that were designed to be permanently...

The shipping weight for the Brophy aluminum scissor steps # AS04 is 20.72 pounds. The step size is 18 inches x 6 inches deep and vertical height measures between 31 and 39 inches high. These steps have a weight capacity of 250 pounds. The weight capacity is the main difference between the Brophy steps # AS04 and # SS04 as the steel steps will have a 300 pound weight capacity. The dimensions of the box they are shipped in are 17-1/8 inches height by 18-3/4 inches width by 9-3/4 deep.

  • 4-Step Scissor Stairs for a Lance Camper in the Back of a Truck
We have a couple of 4-step scissor stairs you could use. We have a steel model, # SS04, and an aluminum model, # AS04, and both are 18 inches wide. These stairs mount using an included bracket that looks like # AS2002. So they do not pin into place. GlowSteps # TLA7804 have pins used to secure to the mounting bracket but they are wider at 20 inches.

  • Can the Brophy Steel Scissor Steps be Installed on a Truck Tailgate
Yes, you can mount the Brophy Steel Scissor Steps, # SS04, to a truck tailgate. I recommend installing the mounting bracket on the top of the tailgate (see photo). To install the mounting bracket, you will want to use four 1/4 inch x 1-1/2 inch long lag screws. Brophy recommends pre-drilling the holes with a 5/32 inch drill bit. You may also be interested in the Non-Slip Adhesive Safety Strips, # NSAS.

  • Should a 4-Step Scissor Step be Used or 5-Step to Decrease the Distance Between Steps
If you pulled out steps # SS04 to a height of 32 inches you would be looking at a step distance of 6 inches or so. The more steps there are in this kind of staircase the less distance (height) it will have to be pulled out, and the closer the steps will be together. The downside is that the less the steps are pulled out the less depth there will be (front to back) before the step above starts to overlap the step below it. That can create a tripping hazard going up and a cause you to miss...
