Video Transcript for Dexter Axle Trailer Brakes BP01-110 Review

Today we're gonna take a look at the replacement trailer brake magnet kit for Dexter and Hayes Alcove 10 inch trailer brakes. This magnet kit will allow you to replace the worn out magnet on your 10 inch trailer brakes, helps you save money and time, because it's better than having to replace the whole brake assembly. This part is designed to work with the following 3500 pound axle brake assemblies. It fits the Dexter 10 inch by 2 1/2 inch brake assemblies, part number 23-26 and 23-27. It fits the Dexter 10 inch by 2 1/4 inch never adjust brake assemblies, part number 23-468 and 23-469, and the Hayes Alcove 10 inch by 2 1/2 inch brake assembly, part number 60202803 and 60202703. As you can see here, it has a nice oval magnet design it.

This increases the efficiency of your brakes and will help extend the life. The sleeve, right here, you'll notice, this will protect the wires from any abrasion. That's the part that goes through the backing plates so if there's any movement you don't want those wires to be cut into. Now, it does the two wires connected so they do need to be connected when you install this. One goes to your brake feed, one goes to a ground, and they're both green wires, so either wire can be used for either function. This part includes everything shown here on the table, the magnet itself, the two springs, and the hold down clip.

A few dimensions on the magnet, just to give you the length of it, from one end to the other is right at 3 5/8 inches long. It's going to be 2 1/8 inches wide, and the overall height of it is right at about 7/8 inches tall. That should do it for the review on the placement trailer brake magnet kit for Dexter and Hayes Alcove 10 inch trailer brakes.

by:

Fit right in, work great, good price, what more can I say?

by:

Recieved the brake magnets, one day ahead of schedule, put them on, they work perfectly.

by:

Came right on time to install prior to our trip tomorrow. Price was great 1/3 of what our local RV dealer wanted.

by:

Perfect replacement for the original magnets that had gone bad.

by:

The product was exactly what I ordered. I Received it on time and at a reasonable price.

by:

Easy install, works great. Shipping was timely. Would use etrailer again.

by:

Great service and saved over half from my local trailer repair shop Thanks

by:

Worked as it should. Attached easily, wires are long and that is helpful with tucking connections away. Wear indicators are helpful with monitoring magnets.

by:

Perfect fit as a replacement for my Quality Axle (used on PJ trailer) 3.5k axle.

by:

not exactly what i needed but i managed to make it work.
the way the magnet mounted to the brake arm was slightly different from i had orignally

by:

Snapped in place fit perfect on a 1998 Holiday Rambler with 3500# axles. Connected wiring and tested back in business brakes now work.

by:

I am well pleased with your product and the fact that I can get parts from you, that I am unable to get here, there is no trailer parts to be had anywhere close to where I live. Your service is very good, quick delivery, it makes it easy for me to order and know I will get what I ordered in record time.

thanks
Bennie

by:

All 3 items I ordered have worked as expected. It is great you had everything in stock. This makes choosing ETrailer my first choice.

by:

Great quality and what I had needed to do the job. Delivered on time..

by:

i ordered an electric brake controller, and it worked perfectly. It came in the time frame as ordered, and was exactly what I had ordered. I took it to a repair shop and the mechanics installed it and, voila, I had brakes!

Im not sure. I traded that trailer in on a new bigger one, so I cant comment for sure, but it was working perfectly when I traded it in.

by:

Had some difficulty installing until I figured out that removing the entire brake assembly including the backing plate allows bench top installation vs trying to install on the trailer. The magnet works as expected and I now have four wheel brakes instead of three!

by:

My AL-KO axle has the text "AL KO 08 05" stamped into the brake shoes in the hub with 10x2.25 brakes and 4.5 inch bolt circle.
Its not exactly the same as the original AL-KO magnet on my trailer - but from all I could tell a perfect fit. The lead wires are plenty long to reach outside the hub before splicing.
This magnet is just what I needed to replace the magnet who's wires wire sheared off at the backing plate when a tire failed. The reasonable price was nice too!

by:

Still working. It is almost never the magnet that wears, but the wires inside the drum that always seem to wear thru and short on some moving part. Trailer brakes what can I say, the design is an after thought. Like when the cable guy runs the wire in your house...

by:

The wires on the old magnet broke off right at the magnet so it wasn't repairable.
This was exactly what we needed, shipping was well priced and quick.

Wow a year later? Weather has been so poor that we dont even have the camper yet. Magnet worked great, Ive bought a couple from etrailer now and will continue to use etrailer for smaller maintenance items.

by:

Service was great and part was as described. After replacing these it did not solve my brake problem. It was a short in the wire going through the axel. Check that first if your brakes are not working. I replaced the wire an all was good.

by:

Bought a new second had trailer.
Wasn't
sure of the axle make and model.
Stripped out the bearings and found the grease seals rubber lip very hard.
Called E Trailer and Phyllis was excellent in working with me to identify the correct seals but with a double lip.
Ordered and received very smoothly-- as promised.
I am going top fit them tomorrow but have already offered up the OD to the hub and the ID to the spindle and I know that I have the correct seals.
Seals look to be good quality and I expect them to be fine.

by:

At a sale price cheaper than a no name locally sourced magnet, the savings was a no brainer. The shipping was fast and communication from etrailer is top notch. The product itself is good quality, pig tail plenty long to splice wherever is convenient, the spring is actually larger in diameter and stiffer than OEM which I count as a plus. It pays to do business with etrailer, you WILL be satisfied with your experience.

  • How to Know When Trailer Brake Magnets are Worn Out and Need Replacing
Are there any visible signs of wear on the magnets like exposed windings then that would indicate they need replacing. Magnets can go bad without showing visible signs of wear though. To see how to troubleshoot them check out the help article I attached. For replacement magnets for the Dexter 10 by 2-1/4 inch assemblies you would want the part # BP01-110. As bad as your assemblies sound you might just want to replace both assemblies. For the left hand side you would want the part # AKEBRK-35L-SA...

No, you can use either wire as a positive or a negative wire. As long as current is traveling through the magnet in either direction this Trailer Brake Magnet, # BP01-110, will function. I attached a video on trailer brake magnet replacement for you to check out also.

  • Replacement Parts for AL-KO 10 x 2-1/4 Inch Electric Trailer Brakes
It can be a challenge some times to determine the correct replacement parts for a given trailer or brake assembly. I did some checking and brake magnet # BP01-110 is correct for Hayes/AL-KO 10 x 2-1/4 inch brakes. To be honest I am not certain what the wire color indicates since magnets now pretty much all use the same wire color for both wires. I was under the impression that it helped identify the year range brake assembly that magnet goes with. However the replacement actuator arms...

  • Replacement Brake Drums and Brake Assembly Parts for Lance 1685 Travel Trailer
Given the wheel bolt pattern and the 8-247 that's cast into your existing brake drums, you have a 3500 lb axle. Assuming you have E-Z Lube spindles with the grease zerks in the end, you'd want to use the # AKHD-545-35-EZ-K hub/drums you looked at. If you have standard spindles, use # 84546UC3. At the very least, you'd want to replace your brake magnets, if they've got grooves worn into them as they won't get a good contact with the new drums for effective braking. Hey Brad, thanks for all of the info on what you have. I can tell your magnets are basically toast, the brake pads look thin, and your hub/drums look like they are in bad shape too so your best option is to go with new assemblies left and right with the part # 23-468-469 and then new hub/drums too which for that you'd need the part # 84546UC3-EZ. This is going to be the longterm solution that will take care of everything for a very long time.

  • Why Would Trailer Brake Magnet Get Hot that is Parked and Not Used
That is really odd! Especially if its only one brake magnet. I would assume that there is a short from the camper battery positive wire circuit to the brake output but even that should affect all of the brake magnets. I would start by testing to see if the wires that run to the brake magnet have voltage on them with a circuit tester like the part # PTW2993 and go from there. I would suspect that there is a short between a battery charge circuit and the assemblies.

The brake magnet, # BP01-115, will fit in the AL-KO brake assemblies because the mounting locations and dimensions are similar, but it was designed for Dexter 10 inch x 2-1/4 inch brake assemblies only. • Will Going with a Higher Rated Brake Magnet Give More Braking Power
Going to a "more powerful" magnet will not give you additional stopping power. All it will do is make your trailer brakes harder to fine tune as they will want to lock up easier.
