Video Transcript for What to Know About the 10" x 1-1/2" Electric Brake Shoe/Lining (One Wheel)

Today we're going to take a look at the replacement shoe and lining for the Dexter 10" x 1.5" electric brake assembly. This part will replace the shoe and the lining for your 10" x 1.5" electric brake assembly for 2,800 pound axles. On axles that are manufactured after 999, they will also accept 10" x 2.25" brakes. These here are designated 10" x 1.5" and where they get those measurements from, the 10" is the diameter. When these are installed on your brake assembly, bolted down, if you measured from this shoe directly across to this shoe, the diameter is 10". The 1.5" is actually the width.

If we put a ruler on it you can see 1.5" for the width of the pad. To know which position these go on your brake assembly, you want to look at the size of the lining. If you look at that, the shorter lining, which is this one right here would be the primary shoe. That will face the front of the trailer. The one with the longer lining, that's the secondary shoe, that will be at the rear, or face the back of the trailer. They do use an automotive grade friction material which is molded to the brake shoes.

The lining is fully bonded, it's not riveted to the shoes, so it gives you a lot longer life, more braking torque. This part does come with the two hole bound springs and clips are all included. That should do it for the review on the replacement shoe and lining for the Dexter 10" by 1.5" electric brake assembly.

It was fun finding these breaks for my 1991 Terre Light fifth wheel until I checked your website.

by:

This was a hard to find part and found it at etrailer, the best!

,Just what I needed and showed up when you said

GOOD PRODUCTS

by:

They look identical to the original ones. However, I haven’t installed them yet. Service was excellent.

by:

After removing the brake drums to service the bearings I discovered significant and uneven wear on the brake shoe linings, so decided to replace all four sets of shoes. These fit just right, and posed no problem with installation and clearance adjustment. The installation instructions you can get online from etrailer are detailed and worth following. One thing I'd add is to do a careful test for range and freedom of movement of the shoes once they have been installed, to check for any binding or obstruction that would interfere with the shoes both being able to expand in and out equally and smoothly.

by:

Great part! Great price! Great service!

by:

Haven’t had time to read install them y et.

by:

I ordered a set of brake shoes for a pair of obsolete Dexter 2.8k axles. It was very easy to locate the correct parts at etrailer. They had the parts in stock and shipped the same day. The price of the parts plus shipping was competitive or better than other suppliers. I have puchased from etrailer in the past and will do so in the future

by:

Ordered for 4 wheels and all four boxes contained shoes with dinged brake linings. Not bad enough for me to return them but if I had ordered them for a vehicle other than a trailer I would have returned them. I fault Dexter with this as the boxes have no packing in them and the shoes just bounce around inside. Etrailer was great for fast shipping but in the future, I'll re-line my own brake shoes.

by:

Fast shipping :)

by:

We own a trailer sales and service facility in Colorado and could not find the brake shoes we were looking for any place local. We got on line to e trailer and found them right away.

by:

Very happy with the purchase. The part was exactly as described and was shipped right away. I would definitely purchase from etrailer again.

Great!

by:

Parts worked great with no issues. As for customer care and shipping, it was a pain. Took a couple weeks to get my parts (covid excuse) but the worst part I was told I'd get my shipping cost back since I paid extra for it to get my parts sooner. I was never reimbursed.

Well it certainly looks like we ped the ball here. I have contacted our Customer Service team about this and they should be reaching out to you as soon as they can.

by:

ordered new brake pads and hardware kit for an older camper. Which etrailer had in stock and which the camper sales said weren't available.

Thanks

by:

You were the only one that I contacted that still had that old of a brake shoe that did not include the assembled unit including the backing plate. On my trailer the backing plate is welded on. You were extremely helpful on my first order to you that I bungled the whole order on the size, for this I rate you tops for my next order , thanks Lane Thompson Weiser Id.

by:

Pads are good but brake material is rather thin vs larger brake pads. Stop fine however.

So far all seem to be working well. Thanks

by:

We live in mid/northern BC, Canada. we had spent quite some time trying to find the right size of shoe/lining for the electric brakes on our older 5th wheel. We tried this site, I was so suprised at how fast it was shipped and how fast it arrived. Exactly what we were looking for! Worth every penny.

by:

I couldn’t locate these brake pads anywhere locally in the northwest and found etrailer had them Greg S helped me making sure these were the ones I needed everything fit great. I liked their shipping tracking, could track my parts very well. I will definitely be using this company again

by:

The brake shoes and adjusters came right on time and in good shape. I started doing the brake job on my travel trailer but had to stop. Everything seems in order-the shoes and adjusters fit fine.

by:

Everything worked out well and still going strong

Based on the images with the measurements you sent the Brake Shoe/Lining # bp04-065, Brake Spring Set # K71-362-00, and Magnet Kit # AKBRKR-M10 are the correct replacement parts for the brakes on your 1998 Nash 20N. We do have the Brake Mounting Flange # 4-35 which you can have welded to your axle. • Using Dexter Brake Pads as Replacements on Hayes Brake Assembly
I can't recommend using a Dexter brake shoe on a Hayes/Al Ko brake assembly. The parts haven't been tested together for fit, so I honestly couldn't say if they'd work or not. The same would go for the return spring. Our usual recommendation is for folks to simply replace the entire brake assembly when the pads wear out. This way all your brake shoes, springs, adjuster and magnet are new as well. For a 10 inch brake drum, a 2-1/4 inch wide brake pad is what we have available. You can determine...

Then you will want the Replacement Trailer Brake Magnet Kit for 7" Brake Assemblies # BP01-068 due to the thinner hubs instead of the traditional 10 x 2-1/4 inch hubs. That guide for the anchor post is not available as a replacement part from any of our manufacturers. • Replacement Brakes for a Dexter 2.8k Axle with 10 x 1-1/2 Inch Electric Drum Brakes
Like you said, 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes are hard to find. We currently do not offer any in that size. But the shoes, # bp04-065, are a fit for Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes. The issue is that the axles associated with the Dexter 10 x 1-1/2 inch brakes normally had the brakes welded onto the axle. This means the assembly cannot be replaced and you can only get replacement parts for the brakes. But if the axle was manufactured after September of 1999 and the brakes are not welded to the axle...

The only two solutions I have for you would be to remove the hubs and get the numbers that are stamped on the bearing or for you to remove the hubs and use a digital or dial caliper to measure where the bearings and seal ride (see pic). • Can Brake Parts be Replaced on Dexter 2,800 Pound Axles with Weld-On Trailer Brake Assemblies
What you were told was only partially correct. If you wanted to replace the entire brake assembly but you had welded on brakes then you could not replace the assemblies. However, you can replace the worn brake parts. There should be a number on the hub if it is a Dexter hub, with an 8-XXX, the Xs being some 3 digit number Dexter uses. With this number we can determine a little about the axles and see what kind of brake parts you need. Also, you can look at the brakes and if they are...

  • Can Brake Assemblies have the Magnet Mounted on Top of the Assembly
Typically brake assemblies mount with the magnet at the bottom of the assembly and the actuating arm pointing forward toward the direction of travel. • Can I Switch From 10" x 1-1/2" Brakes to 10" x 2-1/4" Brakes on a 2013 Keystone Trailer
Because your Dexter axle was made after 1999 then you should have a deep enough hub for the larger brakes, so if you wanted to switch to 10" x 2-1/4" brakes on your 2013 Keystone trailer then you would need to completely replace the assembly. For that you'll want to use the # AKEBRK-35-SA, which are a nice set of self adjusting brakes that are easy to install and will work well for this.
