How to Determine the Lift Capacity You Need in a Jack

A trailer jack is designed to lift the tongue of your trailer so you can connect the trailer coupler to your hitch ball. To do this, you'll need a jack with a lift capacity high enough to handle your trailer's tongue weight.

Tongue weight is the amount of weight that your trailer applies to the back of your tow vehicle. Typically, your tongue weight should be 10-15% of your total trailer weight (trailer + cargo). In other words, a 10,000-lb trailer would have a tongue weight between 1,000 lbs and 1,500 lbs. For a trailer this size, you would need a jack with a lift capacity of at least 1,500 lbs.

It's okay to have a jack with a weight rating that is higher than your trailer's tongue weight. In fact, a jack with a higher lift capacity should operate more efficiently, allowing you to spend less time cranking and more time camping.

Trailer and Camper Jack Lift

Every jack offers a certain amount of lift or travel. Screw travel is the distance the jack extends when you crank it (or toggle it to "extend" on an electric model). Some jacks include a drop leg for extra adjustability. On these jacks, you'll see the maximum extension of the drop leg listed in the specs as well. Adding the screw travel and drop leg travel together will give you the total lift. The total lift listed above can help you determine how high this jack will be able to raise your trailer.

I was extremely impressed with the recent technical and customer support from etrailer. Over the weekend, they answered my questions to select the appropriate replacement electric jack for my Airstream. Also, when there was a shipping delay (not etrailer’s fault), Rose provided prompt responses and professional support. I will continue to use etrailer for my RV needs.

Works flawlessly. Maybe the only thing I could complain about is it is slower than I think it could be. Along with the side lights could always be brighter. Works great, install kit is awesome, and it works without a stutter.

Amazing! I would have replaced mine sooner with this and I known. It’s not faster but way more confident, quiet, and has a larger extension without taking up much more space.

Had been contemplating this purchase/install for a couple of years. Finally bit the bullet. Purchase was simple. Shipping was a day late in arriving, not a real issue, because I live in a rural area. Shipping delays are expected.
Installation was very straight forward, remove three bolts, replace three bolts. That was all there was as far as the mechanical installation. For the electrical portion I elected to splice into the battery power wire that is part of the 7-wire electric cable on the trailer, in lieu of running a dedicated #10 wire direct from the trailer battery.
The jack seems to operate just fine, as anticipated. I have run the jack a number of times over the last few days without issue.
Why not a 5 star review, just haven't owned it long enough nor operated the jack enough. Ask me in 5 years.

by:

I own 10 trailers for business, I have used many electric tongue jacks. This one stands up to the abuse and time in the weather. Recommend this unit to anyone wanting a reliable electric tongue jack. It is not fast, but it is strong

by:

Works well, dependable.

by:

Trailer jack was defective. etrailer.com passed the buck to the manufacturer. The manufacturer was not very receptive and expected me to repair the jack. I purchased a new one and shouldn't have to try to figure out why it wasn't working. I want a new one and should get it from etrailer since I purchased it from them.

by:

This was a complete gamechanger for us. We formerly had a power jack rated for 2500 lbs. Every time I had to raise it, the whole trailer swayed. It also didn't have the adjustable base, so the height was restricted. Moving up to this jack means no more sway and the option for an additional 5 inches of height. Installation was super simple, as well. Thank you, etrailer, for making it so I no longer live in terror of raising my jack.

by:

It was easy to install and has power to spare. I installed it on a 6000 lb travel trailer that requires the truck to be lifted to easily remove the weight distribution bars. My old jack struggled with the weight. Not this one. Lots of power. It's a simple jack. No memory functions, no auto retract feature. Just two buttons. One to raise and lower the front of the trailer, and one for the lights. My issues are that the lights are essentially worthless. They don't produce much light and being on the side of the unit, they aren't aimed where you need them to be. Also, you have to buy their kit to have a place to hang the chains and the cord or, buy a cover that allows you to do the same. I recommend you buy the cover by the way. Solid buy recommendation

by:

We really like our electric jack. It is everything we excepted.

It is getting slower and slower to lift the trailer. Is there anything that needs lubricants?

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

11/15/2023

@Grant The only lubrication needed is the inner jack tube. Stromberg Carlson recommends fully extending the jack which fully exposes the inner tube. Thoroughly clean the tube then lubricate it with a thin coat of grease or a silicone spray lubricant. As far as the jack operating slowly, be sure the battery is fully charged and full power is reaching the jack. Also, the jack picks up its ground connection via its attachment to the trailer tongue. Make sure this connection is secure and not corroded. Hope that helps!

Getting slower in lifting the trailer

Etrailer Expert

Mike L.

11/18/2023

@Grant Make sure the battery is fully charged and the jack is getting a full 12-volts. The jack gets its ground connection via its connection to the trailer tongue, so make sure the connection point between the jack and trailer tongue isn't corroded.

by:

Extremely sturdy, built well and a breeze to install. Amazingly quiet! Lifts the front of my 32' toy hauler effortlessly, very pleased with this jack and I am most definitely going to recommend this to my parents and friends. Oh, and quick shipping, received the jack in three days!

by:

1 year later still no issues it fit perfect on my trailer and still works perfect

by:

The jack has performed great over the past year. The only minor comment would be that the integrated light hasn't been bright enough to use for other tasks other than seeing the switches. As that is as designed feature, it's only a minor inconvenience if you want more light at the trailer hitch.

by:

Easy search for the product, arrived promptly. Easy install, awesome upgrade. Good to go for years to come!!

Ordering Processing, and shipping can not expect any better! Installation, operation. No glitches ! Great followup, excellent staff, product function and appearance all that is desired. Just great!

  • Acceptable Methods of Providing Power to Trailer Jack Mounted on Horse Trailer
You can either power the jack through the accessory circuit on the 7-way or via an auxiliary battery installed on the trailer. If you decide to power the jack through the accessory circuit, it is advisable to use a jack whose capacity exceeds the tongue weight of your fully loaded horse trailer. If the jack is working very hard to lift the trailer, the wire that carries the accessory circuit can overheat. To provide plenty of wiggle room, I would say that if the capacity of the jack exceeds...

The Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2598 that fit your 2018 Ram 2500 will not keep your truck level when you are towing. They are definitely helpful in terms of improving your overall ride and stability but just are not a substitute for a weight distribution system. The reason for this is the tongue weight is not going to be re-distributed when only using air bags; a weight distribution system is the only option which is going to actively transfer that load and thus ensure you...

  • Powered A-Frame Jack Recommendation for a 2011 Keystone Passport 290
We do carry powered A-frame jacks that would work well on your 2011 Keystone Passport trailer model 290 BH. I really like the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000. This jack has a lifting capacity of 5,000 lbs which would be more than adequate for a 5,600 lb trailer that would have a tongue weight of around 500-700 lbs most likely. The extra capacity is great because it allows the jack to work without strain. It works quicker and last longer this way.

  • Can 12 Volt Power Circuit of 7-Way on Truck Power A-Frame Jack
Normally the 12 volt power circuit of a tow vehicle is rated for 40 amps so the answer to your question should be yes, but you would need to check the fuse of the 12 volt accessory circuit on your vehicle to verify if you have the amperage needed for your jack. It is very common that powered A-frame jacks are powered by the 12 volt power circuit of a vehicle.

Sounds like your Stromberg Carlson Electric Jack # JET-5000 has power, but does it have a ground to complete the circuit? This jack grounds through the mounting hardware so it would need to be mounted to a trailer that has a solid ground through the frame. The 5000 capacity will allow the jack to operate quicker and smoother. It will also allow it to last longer. This jack has more than needed capacity but would be just fine in that regard. • Dimensions of Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack JET-5000
I've got great news for you, the mounting holes on the Stromberg Carlson Electric Trailer Jack # JET-5000 are 3 inches apart. A-frame jacks have an industry standard dimension because of the style of coupler used on A-frame trailers. The measurement you will want to make sure fits is the outer tubing diameter of the jack's leg. For the Brute, that tubing diameter is 2-3/16 inches. I linked a Help article on jacks for your convenience.

If the Bulldog Powered-Drive Trailer Jack # BD500161 has been over retracted then that means there could be internal damage and you would not be able to easily fix it. Trailer jacks are rated for the amount of tongue weight that the trailer has. Typically trailer tongue weight is around 10 percent of total trailer weight.
