Electric-hydraulic brake actuator with brake lines lets you use an electric brake controller from inside your vehicle to adjust and control your trailer's hydraulic brakes. Enjoy convenience as you achieve greater braking control and performance.

Features:

  • Electric-hydraulic brake actuator lets you use an electric brake controller from inside your vehicle to adjust and control your trailer's hydraulic brakes
  • Responds to commands from in-cab electric brake controller (sold separately) to apply trailer brakes
    • Activates trailer brakes when you apply brakes in tow vehicle
  • Includes brake line kit and standard breakaway kit
  • Gives you greater control over your trailer's brakes than that provided by standard hydraulic actuators
    • Faster response time
    • Proportional braking for smooth, effective stops
    • Quick adjustment when you change trailers or loads
  • Overcomes problems associated with standard surge brake actuators
    • No interference when you back up, even uphill - no more getting out of your vehicle to lock out brakes
    • No brake drag or pushing sensation, which can occur with surge brakes when you drive downhill
    • Improved safety - allows use of manual override feature that is included with most electric brake controllers, so you can engage the trailer brakes without having to apply your vehicle brakes
  • Constructed of extruded aluminum to resist corrosion
  • Includes built-in bleeder - lets you easily flush air out of your brakes
  • Installs on trailer, connecting into trailer's wiring and hydraulic brake lines
  • Made in the USA

Specs:

  • Application: single- or tandem-axle trailers with disc brakes
    • Requires additional hydraulic line kit (9579-01 - sold separately) for triple-axle trailers
  • Maximum output pressure: 1,600 psi
    • Check with trailer brake manufacturer for pressure specifications
  • Vehicle requires the following (sold separately):
    • In-cab electric brake controller
    • 7-Way, blade-style trailer connector mounted near the bumper (HS381-9000)
  • Actuator dimensions: 11-3/4" long x 3" wide x 7-3/8" tall
  • 2-Year limited warranty

Note: Do not power wash the Hydrastar actuator or take it through a commercial car wash. High-pressure water may damage the seals on the actuator.

The Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic trailer brake actuator applies pressure to your trailer's hydraulic brake system in response to the electrical signals sent from your in-cab brake controller. As a result, your trailer's hydraulic brakes will be activated every time you apply the brakes in your vehicle or press the manual override on your controller. You will get responsive hydraulic braking, which you control conveniently from inside your vehicle with your electric brake controller.

Hydrastar Electric-Over-Hydraulic Actuator vs Standard Surge Brake Actuators

With the Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator, you can get all the benefits of towing with an electric brake controller while using hydraulic brakes. Because this actuator will activate according to the settings you have chosen for your brake controller (sold separately), you will have more control over when and how your trailer brakes engage. Depending on the features of your brake controller, you may be able to control both the rate and intensity with which your trailer's brakes activate. You can also use the manual override on your brake controller, which allows you to engage the trailer brakes without having to apply the brakes in your vehicle. And perhaps most impressive, if you have a proportional brake controller, your brakes will be activated with an intensity that matches the braking speed and power of your rig.

This pump-and-motor-based system increases response time compared with traditional actuators because the trailer brakes are triggered when you apply the brakes in the tow vehicle, as opposed to when the trailer pushes against the hitch ball. This not only gives you faster, more efficient braking, but it also eliminates the pushing sensation that occurs in setups that use standard surge brake actuators.

Hydrastar actuators are also beneficial because, unlike standard surge couplers, they allow you to activate your brakes when reversing down an incline, such as a boat ramp. Having the ability to brake in reverse gives you more control and prevents wear on your tow vehicle.

Hydrastar Installation

Hydrastar Installation Diagram

This Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator will give you years of trailer-stopping performance. The actuator mounts on your trailer's frame with the included hardware. Then it splices into the trailer's wiring and connects to your hydraulic brake lines from the 3/16" female port. Lines and fittings are sold separately.

Durable Construction

Just like other Hydrastar electric-over-hydraulic actuator models, this system is built of extruded anodized aluminum for superior corrosion resistance. The weathertight seals protect internal components from the elements.

Brake Controller Compatibility

Not all electric trailer brake controllers work with this electric-over-hydraulic brake actuator. See the following table to determine compatibility with common models of brake controllers. For best performance, it is recommended that you use an aftermarket electric brake controller rather than an OEM factory-installed controller.

  • Disc Brake Conversion Kit For 2021 Grand Design Solitude 310GKR With 7,000 lb Axles
Hello Rick, thanks for reaching out. The 7,000 lb axle on your 2021 Grand Design Solitude 310GKR uses a standard bearing combination, so finding compatible disc brakes will be easy. Here is what I recommend: - DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit - 13" Hub/Rotor - 8 on 6-1/2 - Maxx Coating - 9/16" Bolts - 7K # DE68YR - Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16-252-82 The disc brake kits are enough for one axle, so you will need two kits if you want brakes on...

  • Can Curt Echo Mobile Trailer Brake Controller be Used with Hydrastar Actuator
Yes, the Curt Echo Mobile brake controller # C51180 is compatible with electric over hydraulic brake actuators like the HydraStar part # HBA16-252-82 you referenced so these two would work great together. The Hydrastar actuators are the most reliable and fastest reacting so they are what we recommend the highest.

This kit will give you the calipers, discs, and oil cap, but you will need to get the bearings and seal separately. For the inner bearing you will use # 25580, and you'll use # 02475 for the outer bearing. The seal needed is # RG06-070 sold in the pair. Your 2010 Cameo by Carriage can have the axles upgraded and disc brakes added, but you would need to contact the manufacturer to ensure your capacity would be increased because it will be based on the weakest component. We don't carry any disc brake assemblies for the 9K axles, but we do have the 8k and 10K options. I've attached an article to assist with upgrading to EOH disc brakes. Hey Brad, yeah the movement you are seeing is pretty normal. I've played around with enough trailer brake assemblies to know that there is a bit of play in the areas you mentioned when new so what you have is no problem. Since the magnet needs to be able to grab the drum and release it needs to be able to move in and out like you mentioned.

We have the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit part # K2HR712D which is the correct hub/rotor set for the 7k axles on your trailer. You'd need 3 of these for your trailer and then an electric over hydraulic actuator like the # HBA16 you mentioned. I would actually recommend the # HBA16-252-82 though as it comes with the breakaway kit plus enough lines for two of your axles. For the third axle you'd then want the part # 9579-01.

  • Does 12 Volt Output Circuit of Trailer Wiring Charge Hydrastar Breakaway Battery
Hey Mike, yes the 12 volt aux circuit of the trailer wiring does charge house batteries typically. If you have Lithium batteries as your house batteries and they are connected to your tow vehicle wiring through the trailer wiring they aren't getting charged though since they require a higher voltage than what will have made it through the 7-way connectors. It sounds like you maybe have a BCDC style of charge controller to charge the lithium batteries though. I would recommend bypassing...
