Recommended Disc Brake Kit for AL-KO 6,000 lb Axles

Updated 07/15/2020 | Published 04/11/2018

Question:

I have a 2006 Forest River Cedar Creek Silverback 33LBHTS fifth wheel. I want to put a disc brake conversion on it. From what I can gather by the specs it has AL-KO 6000# axles. I crawled under the trailer and see no axle tags. It has 8 lug 16inch wheels. Can you help with what I would need to do this conversion? Thank you

For your AL-KO 6,000 lb axles, you will want the Kodiak Disc Brake Kit # K2HR858AE that will fit the same #42 spindles used on that axle. This kit will give you the calipers, discs, and oil cap, but you will need to get the bearings and seal separately. For the inner bearing you will use # 25580, and you'll use # 02475 for the outer bearing. The seal needed is # RG06-070 sold in the pair.

For your brake lines and Electric over Hydraulic actuator, I recommend the HydraStar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for Disc Brakes - 1,600 psi # HBA16-252-82. I've attached a couple videos and an article to assist.

I've linked our full selection of disc brakes below - the right replacements for your trailer will depend on your axle capacity, etc. I wasn't able to find much info on that Wagner actuator - it looks like the part number you found is just for the reservoir cap. Is there anything else stamped onto the unit?

thank you. You are correct about the part number being for the hitch cap. The hitch cap capacity is 20,000 lbs. I found an actuator that looks like the one I have. I am beliving it is good for 20,000 lbs. Just my judgement. How can I determine the axle capacity? This stuff is more complex than I thought. I am believing it will be $2,000 (not counting my labor to install) to repair the brake system. Now wondering if the trailer is worth it. @ChrisR

@Butch There should hopefully be a tag/sticker on one of the axles that show its specs (capacity, type, etc). Otherwise this info would be listed in the trailer's paperwork. If you can pull one of the existing hubs and note the inner and outer bearing numbers (numbers will be stamped inside the bearings themselves) this would help narrow down the possibilities too.
