Updated 01/05/2026 | Published 09/23/2024

Question:

Can you recommend an electric over hydraulic package for my boat trailer? It has 2x 6000 lb GAWR Dexter axels PN: G-50271FK. 15” wheels. Never had brakes installed. Towing w/2018 GMC Yukon factory brake controller. Will be used in salt water.

Hello Dustin, thanks for reaching out. We actually carry conversion kits that are made specifically for this purpose. For your boat trailer with 6K Dexter axles, you can use the Hydrastar Electric Over Hydraulic Actuator Kit for Disc Brakes # HBA16-252-82 which will come with everything you need minus the disc brake kit itself.

For a disc brake kit I recommend the DeeMaxx Disc Brakes # DE58YR. This kit comes with stainless calipers and the rotors use a rust-resistant Maxx coat which is great for marine applications. This hub has a 6 on 5-1/2" bolt pattern and it uses the # 25580 inner and # 15123 outer bearings, so please confirm that this matches your axle.

Keep in mind that you will also need an electric brake controller in your truck that is compatible with electric over hydraulic brakes. Some factory brake controllers are not EOH compatible, or they may need to be switched to EOH mode. Virtually any aftermarket controller will be compatible. I recommend the Tekonsha P3 # 90195 if you are in need.

We have an article that goes over the process of adding brakes to your trailer, and you will find it linked below. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Hey Dustin, how did the Hydrastar actuator kit and DeeMaxx disc brakes work out on your boat trailer? I’m curious if the setup handled well with your Yukon’s brake controller. Sharing your results could really help others planning a similar saltwater build.

@JesseM I wasn’t able to get the Hydrastar actuator because it was back ordered. Ended up with the Dexter EOH instead. Works great with my 2018 Yukon Denali
