DeeMax Disc Brake Kit Recommendation for Cherokee 274VFK with 5,200 lb Axles

Updated 06/26/2025 | Published 06/19/2025

Question:

Can you recommend a disc brake conversion kit for a tandem axle trailer with Lippert axles: 5200 lbs, serial 045-004466135 on a cherokee-274vfk camper. I like the DeeMaxx Disc Brake Kit w/ Actuator - but it does not look like one is available for this axle?

Hey Royce, the great thing about 5,200 lb trailer axles is that they use the same components as 6k axles so for a disc brake kit from DeeMax that is a fit for your Lippert 5,200 lb axles you'd want the part # DE28YR and you'd be set.

Then for a kit that comes with everything else you'd need to convert to disc brakes you'd want the part # HBA16-252-82 and you'd be set with the nicest disc brake conversion you can get for your camper.

Jameson, Thank you for your response. Is there a specific reason you are recommending the rotor/hub combination over the slip on rotor?

@RoyceW It's generally more popular and a little easier to pick out since it's a single part number over finding an idler hub and then a slip on kit. Both would work great though. Do you prefer a slip on? Slip ons do offer an easier route to replacing rotors since the hub doesn't have to get replaced either.

@JamesonC As I have hubs installed on the 2018 trailer I do not see the reason to buy hub/rotor units unless there is a specific reason. The Hydrastar unit - is it better quality than the DeeMaxx? Or both are comparable and the Hydrastar unit also has the brake line kit? What do you estimate the shop cost for removing the drum brakes and installing the disc brakes and components? Can etrailer complete this install? Or should I find someone local that can do it?

@RoyceW If you have idler hubs already then a slip on system would be the way to go to use your money the most efficiently. So for that instead you'd want the part # DE82FR. We've heard great things about the DeeMaxx so I am sure it is a solid option but we've had the most firsthand experience with the Hydrastar so we know it really is rock solid and a great option so we still tend to favor it. If you are near us we can do the install and a lot of the time the install is free as long as we can shoot an install video at same time which does add some time to the process. If you are near St. Louis MO this would be the way to go, It's hard to speculate what cost would be at a different shop but I doubt it would be cheap.
