Secure, Interlocking Two-Piece Jaw

Unlike slide-bar models, the rounded, interlocking, two-piece jaw on this fifth-wheel trailer hitch inhibits rattle and movement by securely wrapping around your trailer's king pin, resulting in easier hookup and a safer, quieter ride.

Three-Point Indicator System

A20 Color Indicator System

Get peace of mind with Curt's color-coded lock indicator. Just look at the indicator - either the one on the handle or the one on the hitch itself - to determine whether the jaw is in the correct position to uncouple (red), couple (yellow) or tow (green).

Video Transcript for Ultimate Overview of the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch

Today we're going to take a look at the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with a 20,000 pound weight capacity. Now, this fifth wheel hitch will mount in your truck bed so that you can tow your fifth wheel trailer. It uses the interlocking two-jaw system right here, which provides a nice 360-degree jaw-to-kingpin contact, and because of that it'll give you less rattle, more security than your slide bar models. Also, on the front of each jaw, over here and over here, you can notice there's two built-in grease zerk fittings, which will give you easy lubrication of the jaws. This hitch does use a fully articulating torsion head for controlled coupling and a nice stable, quiet ride. It will self-align for easy hookup, and helps suppress road shock to reduce any bothersome towing noise. The handle right here is a lockable handle.

It's a very short-throw single-handle operation. The nice thing about it, also, it does self-reset to the ready-to-couple position after uncoupling. Now, when you put this together, when you mount the crossmember to the legs, there's three rows of holes on the crossmember, so it actually will give you a four inch hitch height adjustment. The hitch height would be measured from your truck bed to the top of the hitch head, and you want that to be as close as possible, so when you're towing your fifth wheel with your tow vehicle, you want those level. It gives you three choices, anywhere from thirteen inches of hitch height adjustment up to seventeen inches. One of the nice features on this is the three-point indicator system. It'll tell you what position the jaws are in.

What's nice about it is that it's color-coded. Let me just swing this around so you can be able to see. If you notice, right under the hitch head, right here, you'll notice right now it's showing solid green. That means the jaws are completely closed. If we had a kingpin in there, the green would mean you're ready to tow.

This color coding will tell you if the hitch is ready to uncouple, couple, or tow. What's nice about those colors and looking, if you're in the cab, the cab would be right here, you can turn around as you're hooking up or uncoupling and watch the color, and when it changes, it tells you the position of the jaws. Basically, the green, like it is now, the jaws are locked closed; it's safe to tow. If it goes to yellow, let me just unhook this and pull out the handle. You can see right now, because I opened the jaws, it's showing yellow. Yellow means the jaws are ready to couple.

It's safe to back in the truck to couple up to your fifth wheel. It if would show red there, that means the jaws are locked open, and it's safe to pull your truck away. When it's red, you do not want to couple. Also, this has a nice fast one-pin head removal, makes it very easy for one person to remove the hitch. Back here, there's a clip you can pull out, and then you can pull this large pin out, and that'll allow you to take the head out of the crossmember so you can take it apart in pieces, which makes it easy for one person to remove the hitch. Also included with this . Let me roll this around here. There we go. Included with this, I have laid out, comes with the plastic loop plate right here. This plastic loop plate will go onto your kingpin and lets the kingpin glide smoothly into the hitch during hookup. Also comes with, you can see, the pins and clips for attaching the legs to your base rails. This is a simple installation with base rails and an installation kit. Now, the base rails and the installation kit we do sell separately on our website. I would recommend to go to our website, use our fit guide, put in your year and model vehicle, and it'll show you the correct base rails and installation kit for your application. This fifth wheel hitch is compatible with B and W, Curt, Demco, Draw-Tite, Hidden Hitch, Husky, Reese, and Valley above-bed base rails. This is a sturdy steel construction with a durable carbide powder-coat finish. Again, the specs on this. The gross towing weight capacity is 20,000 pounds. The vertical load limit or pin weight capacity is 5,000 pounds. We had mentioned the hitch height adjustment from thirteen inches to seventeen inches. What I'm going to do now is, we already have the jaws open, ready to couple, showing yellow, so what I want to do is here's an example. This is what a kingpin would look like on your fifth wheel. When you go to hook up, your kingpin would slide in between the two jaws, just like this, and once you get it far enough, your jaws will completely wrap around the kingpin. You notice the handle automatically slides up. The holes line up, so you just take your pin and clip, drop your pin into the hole, clip it, and that'll lock the handle. Now, the hole is large enough, you could actually put a padlock on there if you wanted extra security. It does come with this attached pin and clip. With the handle locked, you look back here at the color, it's showing green. That means you're all ready to tow. Again, to uncouple, you just pull your pin out, open it back out, and go, be able to back right out. That should do it for the review on the Curt A20 dual-jaw fifth wheel trailer hitch with the 20,000 pound weight capacity.

  • Comparing the Curt Q20 and the Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitches.
As far as height adjustability and weight capacities the Curt Q20 # C16130 and the Curt A20 # C16140 are identical. They both have a Gross Towing Weight of 20,000 lbs, a Vertical Load Limit of 5,000 lbs, and a height range of 13-17 inches. When it comes to choosing which one is better, even though they are both excellent choices, I recommend going with the A20 because it has more features. Right off the bat the A20 has interlocking jaws to secure your king pin as opposed to the Q20 jaw...

  • What Is The Towing Capacity Of 2011 Ford F350 6.7L XLT SRW Crew Cab 8' Bed?
Hello CJ, thanks for reaching out. Based on the towing capacity chart I found online, the bumper pull capacity of a 2011 Ford F350 6.7L SRW Crew Cab is 14,000 lbs. The Curt Adjustable 2-Ball Mount # C99NR has a 10K capacity when used with the 2" ball, and a 15K capacity with the 2-5/16" ball. So as long as the 5-1/2" drop is sufficient for your trailer, that will be a great choice for a ball mount.

  • Pros and Cons of 5th Wheel Hitch With a Slide Bar Jaw Versus a Dual Jaw Hitch
The difference between a slide bar jaw and a dual jaw is how tightly the fifth wheel king pin is held. Both do a good job securing the king pin, preventing it from coming loose. The Dual Jaw will hold the king pin much more tightly, preventing the king pin from rattling around in the pin box. Any movement of the king pin in the hitch jaws will be easily felt and heard in the truck cab. Every time the you brake or accelerate, if there's any movement in the hitch jaws-you're gonna feel...

These are the rails which were traditionally used with most 5th wheels installed in trucks. The above bed rails are always mounted inside the truck but they will allow you to...

They are kind of hard to see but I attached a picture that points them out. Curt recommends high pressure grease like the part # L11465. If you need a grease gun we have part # L30200.

  • Will Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch Work with Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pins
I do have an option for you but the Curt A-Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches like part # C16140 are only compatible with the first generation Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pins, not the second generation Reese Sidewinder 5th Wheel King Pin because there was an issue with the wedge shearing off during testing. If you have the first generation then you can use the Sidewinder Wedge for Curt A Series 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches part # C16992 but if you have the second generation then you will...

  • Why Can't the Curt Rota-Flex Pin Boxes Be Used with the Curt Q-Series 5th Wheel Hitches
Hey Derek, thanks for reaching out! The Curt Rota-Flex pin boxes, like part # LC176440 you referenced, aren't compatible with the Curt Q-Series hitches because the pin box hitch plate moves and the Q-Series hitches use a spherical axial bearing which provides a smooth ride quality for standard pin boxes, but will work against the movement of the Rota-Flex pin boxes. Instead of the Q-Series I recommend using the A-Sers # C16140 which is pretty similar, but it has a torsion head so it will...

  • Trouble with Locking Handle Engaging on the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch
I spoke to my contact at Curt about your Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 and they informed me that the locking handle issue is likely a result of improper lubrication. For starters, I would take some brake parts cleaner and spay down the jaws and the locking handle to ride any debris. Once you have let the jaws and handle mechanism dry then you can take some LubriMatic White Lithium Grease part # L11354 and work it onto these components while moving them back and forth to...

  • Can Head Unit From Curt Q20 Be Used On Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch?
Hello Rick, thanks for reaching out. I know this isn't what you wanted to hear, but your best option here will be to get a whole new hitch. The Q20 hitch system has basically been discontinued and replaced with the A20 series hitches. The head units and bases are not interchangeable between the two hitches. I know what you mean about the handle and slider on the Curt hitches being tricky to operate. This is the case with all of their hitches. If you want something better, take a look at...

  • Towing 19K Toy Hauler With 18K Rated 5th Wheel Hitch
According to my research, the 2007 Silverado 2500 Classic has a towing capacity that varies from about 10,100 to around 15,000 lbs depending on how the truck is equipped so you'll definitely be exceeding the towing capacity of the truck as well as that of an 18K capacity 5th wheel hitch. Does the 19K figure you stated for the weight of the toy hauler represent its GVWR or is that it's dry or weight? The dry weight would typically be quite a bit lower. I couldn't recommend towing in excess...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Hitch for a 17,000 Lb Trailer
For a 17,000 lb trailer for which I am assuming is dry weight, I would error on the side of caution and use a 5th wheel hitch rated for at least 20,000 lbs. For a 20,000 lb 5th wheel hitch, I recommend the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16541 for long beds or part # C16140 for short beds. The Curt 5th Wheel Trailer Hitches are excellent options. They have a pivoting head that makes hooking up the travel on unlevel ground easy. In order to install this hitch on your truck you...

  • Why Would Curt A20 Fifth Wheel Hitch Chuck with Travel Trailer
Hey Matt, that's frustrating to hear but my first question is what type of wedge are you using for the pin box and the A20? If it's a universal wedge that would be what I'd think the issue is. The custom fit wedge you'd need is the part # C16992. That should tighten up chucking quite a bit. Let me know what you have now for a wedge and we can go from there. Also if you see where the movement is that is causing the noise let me know.

  • Recommended 5th-Wheel Hitch that is Easily Removed on 2014 Ram 1500
Choosing the right 5th-Wheel Trailer Hitch for your 2014 Ram 1500 will depend first on the weight of the trailer you plan on towing. You will want to make sure the truck and hitch have weight capacities that exceed the trailer's loaded weight. Since your Ram 1500 has a short 5-1/2 foot bed, the safest way to tow a trailer is to use a stationary 5th-wheel hitch and replace the pin box on the trailer with a Sidewinder, if it does not have one already. The Sidewinder will be required to add...

  • Recommended 5th Wheel Underbed System for 2015 Chevy Silverado Short Bed with Gooseneck Integrated
There is only one option to help you get the gooseneck and rails you desire in your 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 short bed. The standard rails attach at the same locations as the gooseneck hitch brackets so individual options are not compatible. My recommendation is to use the Reese Elite Series Under-Bed Gooseneck Complete Hitch # RP30158-68 which will give you the underbed gooseneck hitch and the underbed rails with the pucks for a clean bed when not in use. Then you can use your current...

  • Correct Curt 5th Wheel Install Kit for a 2020 Ram 3500
The correct Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for a 2020 Ram 3500 is part # C16430-204. The Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit is a custom bolt-on fit with no cutting or drilling required into the frame. If you don't already have a fifth wheel hitch, the Curt A20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch part # C16140 is my recommendation because of the interlocking dual jaw system which has a tight grip on the king pin and works to reduce chucking and jarring.

  • Under Bed Fifth Wheel Hitch Rail Recommendation for 2017 Ford F-250
Essentially the factory Ford fifth wheel rail system is a Reese rail kit, but Reese doesn't sell the rail kit for your truck and the only way to get it would be directly through Ford. Curt does offer a fifth wheel hitch that fits that rail kit directly though with the A20 part # C16034. Another option is the B and W Companion Hitch and Gooseneck setup that consists of the rail kit/gooseneck hitch # BWGNRK1116-5W and then the fifth wheel hitch part # BWRVK3500-5W. The rail kit doubles...

  • Is the Reese Sidewinder Pin Box Compatible with a Curt A20 5th Wheel Hitch?
Hey Tim! Yes, the Reese Sidewinder Pin Both # RP34FR (which replaced the 68220) will work great with a Curt A20 hitch, like the universal # C16140, but you'll need to use the Sidewinder Wedge # C27NR for the Curt A20. Are you looking to replace your pin box, or your 5th wheel hitch?

  • Solution for Curt Q20 Fifth Wheel Hitch with Loud Clunking from Jaws
Since the jaws of your Q20 can't be adjusted or replaced your best solution is going to be a new hitch like with the Curt A20 part # C16140 which is the newer version of what you have now which has a much tighter jaw design that will be quieter and last longer. Instead of the two jaw pieces coming together and just touching each other in the middle the A20 jaw has two pieces that lock together.

  • Where Does Curt Q20 Fifth Wheel Hitch Have it's Grease Fittings
For the Curt Q20 5th Wheel Trailer Hitch # C16130, Curt does recommend that "black graphite grease" be used for the jaw before initial use and every 1,000 miles thereafter. Black graphite grease can usually be obtained at a local auto parts or hardware store and will probably just be labeled as "graphite grease." You can use the grease fitting that is centered in the cast base plate to grease the lower bearing assembly. The fitting is visible while looking down through the jaws in their...

  • Do Air Bags Fit 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 With 5th Wheel Hitch in Bed
Yes, you can absolutely add the Firestone Ride-Rite Air Helper Springs # F2613 to your 2020 Chevy Silverado 2500 that has a 5th wheel hitch in the bed. The reason you can do so is that the air bags install to the bottom of your truck's frame so the air bags will not interfere with a base rail kit like the Curt Custom Fifth Wheel Installation Kit for Chevy/GMC Truck # C16429-204 that fits your 2020 Silverado 2500. That means you can use a fifth wheel hitch like the sliding Curt A20 # C16541...

  • Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch for 2008 Ford F-350 With Curt Gooseneck Hitch
There are a couple of options which you can choose from which will allow you to pull a 5th wheel trailer with your 2008 Ford F-350, which I'll go over for you. The best option by far is the Demco Recon Gooseneck-to-5th Wheel Trailer Hitch Adapter # DM8550045 because it gives you the security of a fifth wheel hitch with a strong jaw system while simply fitting on the gooseneck ball of the Curt EZr. It is both simple to use and strong, with a 21,000 lb towing capacity. I strongly recommend...
